5. Microbes in the Built Environment:
Why Care?
• The BE is a large part of our niche
• Buildings, planes, cars, etc.
• The BE can be considered a model system
for studying microbial ecology and
diversity
• defined components
• controllable inputs and outputs
• many replicates possible
• Microbes in the BE likely influence
• Human health
• Human microbiome
• BE ecology
Tuesday, June 26, 12
6. History
• Interest in microbes in the built
environment is nothing new
• Most focus historically has been:
• on pathogens
• done using culturing
• New approaches possible
• culture independent (e.g., DNA
sequencing)
• rapid decreases in cost / difficulty
• also applies to culture-based studies
Tuesday, June 26, 12
8. But ...
• Culture independent approaches have
taken off in many areas of microbial
studies
• Ocean microbiology
• Human microbiome
• Genomics taken off too
• Microbes of phylogenetic, economic,
health, ecological interest
• But ...
• Not been so fast an uptake in BE studies

12. Sloan Program
• Alfred P. Sloan Foundation funded a
few “pilot” studies in microbiology of
the built environment
• Launched larger program a few years
ago with calls for proposals in multiple
areas including
• Database/informatics
• Center
• Network

33. 5. How to share
• Give a man a fish and you feed him for
a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed
him for a lifetime.
• Share something for someone and you
help them for a day. Teach them to
share and you help them and everyone
for a lifetime.

from laptop
• How to post to Mendeley
• How to use Social Media for work
• Benefits of open access publishing
• Benefits of open data release
