SURIYANI BTE ABDUL RAHMAN This photo is taken during the 2nd Handcycling Time Trials/ Sprint 2010, A HAS/SDSC – National Disability League Event held at ITE Simei last weekend; 10/10/10. My cousin took part in the race and got second place. This picture fits the theme “Passion” as can be seen from his facial expression and the mood of the picture; he is really passionate about winning the race, despite knowing that he is the youngest amongst the other competitors, who are older and stronger than he is. Despite all that, he is willing to give is best and not let the trainings he had gone through for the race go to waste. He had ignored all the aches and pain on his arms and focused on reaching the finishing line. He had his eyes on the prize. Not only that, I also think that he is a good example to all the other people out there who are suffering the same fate as he is (not being able to walk since he was born), that nothing is impossible as long as you give your best shot and keep on trying. And that they are not alone, many other people are just like them, but they made a difference in their lives by challenging themselves and boost their confidence level by giving their best and getting applause from the audience/spectators who were watching. It’s all about having the passion and believing in themselves that they can do it!

SURAJ LAXHMAN S/O GOVINDARAJO Google search defines Passion as "a strong feeling or emotion". But the question here is what Passion is to YOU!? Passion is like a movie. There are many sub genre’s to it like comedy, romance, thriller etc but in the term Passion, it would be like sports, academic, networking or even playing computer games. One of that many types would be Music. Music, honestly speaking, is a very cliché subject. But it’s also the uprising trend of youngsters. Personally, I feel musicians tend to show Passion when they are on stage and off. Like my caption says, "When we do what we love, we love what we do". Being one myself, I love music. I love making music. Thus that's why I understand what Passion means through a musician's mindset. In order catch this emotions and feelings in every show, I took up a camera and started snapping gigs and shows which happen frequently nowadays in Singapore. And one such thing, I was at Jammerz Arena OMG (Channel 5) auditions and Ignite Sound check just a day before Ignite Music Festival. In my submitted photo, I've managed to capture Jammerz Arena's President live in action doing what he does best. Entertaining. Singing is what he does best. And he makes sure he does his best. A picture paints a story and says a thousand words just as how I believe this picture shows passion. His facial expressions and strained neck shows how much he is putting into this show. With the stream of lights at the back of him, it brings out the whole theme of musicality, performing and pouring your heart out which is what I call Passion. With warm and striking colours, it helps brings out the intensity of the event which I managed to capture on camera just in time. His body language further brings out his emotions. Personally, I believe musicians have this automatic surge of energy once they’re on stage and this brings out all they have in them to put up the best show time after time. This all boils down to the main genre of passion, Music. Something which will timeless and full of life, emotion, and passion.
TAN WEI WEN There are so many definitions for the term “passion”. Passion is someone’s dream or interest in a particular activity. Passion is a strong or extravagant fondness, enthusiasm, or desire for anything. Passion can also refer to the object of such a fondness or desire. Passion is something we do willingly and whole-heartedly. It is not easy to hold a passion for long as there will be many obstacles faced. However, after gritting your teeth and overcoming each obstacle faced, you will soar higher and your passion may grow even stronger. Therefore, I took this picture to tell people how I feel about my passion. I have been dancing as a ballroom dancer since 6 years old. Dance became a passion with me as it gave me a platform to express my talent and emotions freely. Dancing with my heart and dwelling in the music gives me peace. Dance is more than a beautiful art form but also an expression of one’s thoughts and emotions. I want to be an inspirational dancer to others, to spark an interest in dance in them and make them feel touched by passionate dance. The picture expresses my feelings towards my passion: that dance is always never ending, the more you dance, the more you want to improve and excel. I want to be like the person jumping high and shining in the dance floor in this picture. I am excited about showing the world the real passion of dance and how dance gives people life. Dancing with the body and feet is one thing but dancing with the heart is another. We ought to immerse ourselves in dance that we might feel alive and part of life. Thus, I named the picture “Soar” as I want the picture to be alive. It depicts one flying high at the top feeling the rush of excitement and the achievement made.
ZHANG YI ERIC Passion is defined as an entire range of strong feelings or emotions, especially those of “love, lust, heat, rage, mania and sexual desire.” Passion described in terms of love connotes any object that a person feels warmth, affection or devotion towards. Hence, I will be showing “love” as Passion, captured at the very right moment. Well, the meaning of the word “Passion” itself is somewhat or rather subjective; it varies from person to person. To some, playing basketball may be a passion, but do not forget the fact, that not everyone loves basketball. Thus, I have decided to use this picture as I believe that every single one of us; if not, most of us have been through this stage of life when we were a kid. People often use couples, Grandparents or maybe even animals to show “love” in a picture. For me, I have been thinking for a long period of time and I have decided to use a child instead to show the strong feeling of love she has for her parent. This is because I feel that nothing can be stronger than the love between a parent and the child. To any ordinary person, this picture may just show a little girl holding her parent’s hand. Well, to me, I don’t just see it as it is. In fact, you can tell the difference in the way the little girl holds the hand of her parent. Normally, we would either hold hands, palm-to-palm; if not, have our parents to grab our wrists. This little girl in the photo actually used her whole arm up to her elbow length to hug her parent’s hand. From her actions, I can feel the love she has for her parent and that no matter what, she will never let go of this relationship; it means too much of an importance for her to let go of this love. Hence, I have named this image as “Hold me tight and never let go”. The Passionate love of a child to her parent.
TAN JIAN YANG Looking up the dictionary, the word passion can be defined like this “strong amorous feeling or desire; love; ardor.” In the picture, we see the subject holding hand in hand together along the beach, with a warm golden glow shining down upon, reflecting in the water between these two lovers. Their reflection in the water is what most of the teenagers of our age has always wanted to be, a simple passion for one another, just walking together hand in hand and nothing else really matters. Just like the song, “simple love” by Jay Chou JieLun, a Taiwanese Singer. The simple body language between the two reflects a simple passion for each other, holding hand in hand tightly, synchronising their sights together with a simple gesture from the boy. It reflects the simple understanding and appreciation of the boy intended message, obediently acknowledging to what the boy wants to bring across to her. The warm golden glow in the picture itself represents the warm feeling of what two passionate lover feel, a rich and glamorous feeling, rare, and expensive. The colour clearly defined the colour the two will radiate if they were to radiate a glow out of themselves. The two different texture and surface reflecting in the picture shows the rough and smooth patches the two lovers will go through. The sandy surface represents the rough patches a simple passionate relationship will get to go through quarrels, misunderstandings, stuff like that. Ironically, the smooth water surface also reflects the calm passion love that the two will get to appreciate during the relationship as well, the time where everything was smooth and well. The coming of the two surface element visually represent the simple summary of a relationship in all sort of relationships. In conclusion, the elements that can be found in the picture, running from the subject, colour, composition determines and defined the story or even stories of many typical lovers, passionately in love with their partners.
AHMAD RIFA'IE B MUSTAPHA First and foremost, dirt riding is a unique hobby among Singaporeans. It is an under rated sport, because it is not well known and recognised in our country. Few things that makes dirt riding a fun thing to do is being able to go through the high slopes, challenging paths and not forgetting the muddy trails. Even though we are riding the bike, it is tiring as well. Talk about controlling the bike on an uneven surface throughout the journey! It is completely different from riding on a normal road. Accidents, falls, and injuries are common in dirt riding so it is always wise to wear a full motocross gear which comes with padded jersey and pants or a long sleeve and long pants, together with helmet, gloves and boots to protect yourself if you fall. And the most important thing, water is needed to hydrate yourself as there are no shops in the middle of the forest! It is always safe to ride with a partner or a group rather than riding alone. Otherwise, be prepared to survive on your own with no one to help if anything occurs. There are times where the tyre could puncture, or bike runs out of fuel, and also damaged caused to the bike when there is a fall. Therefore it is always recommended to go in either a group or someone knowledgeable in bikes. This picture was taken in a small forest along Changi Coastal Road. As there are only limited places to go dirt riding, it is the most common place among the dirt riders and so, there are times when we will bump into different riders throughout the ride. It is always peaceful there therefore we can cherish the nature by only the sounds of the birds and crickets. The only sound that ruined the silence is the sound of our scrambler bikes. Dirt riding is my passion, and I hope that the sport will be recognised in Singapore and go to the next level. I hope this have given you more knowledge about dirt riding. Peace out!
ANG WEN JIE What is passion? Passion is an intense emotion compelling feeling, enthusiasm, or desire for anything. When one have the desire to own something, his body’s power increased, allowing him to do impossible stuffs. This photo was taken on 19 September 2010, at the annual Singapore Ultimate Opens(SUO). SUO is a prestigious Ultimate Frisbee competition in SouthEast Asia. Every year, countries like India, Malaysia , Philippines and even Australia will send their teams to participate in this competition. In this photo, Oscar Fletcher, Player #311 from local club FreakShow did a fantastic layout aka dive in order to catch the disc. This was an important point as it will determine the team that will proceed to the Finals of SUO. So what does this layout got to do with passion? It was his desire to score that important point for the team that will separate the two teams in order to proceed into the Finals. Because he’s got the passion, he is willing to do anything to catch the disc and score that point. Just look at the way he fly through the air to catch that disc. If you do not play Ultimate Frisbee, you will think that it is impossible for someone to fly and catch the disc midair before landing hard on the grass. If you go out and ask anyone if they are willing to dive for a Frisbee, most of them will say that you are crazy. Why? This is because they do not have passion in the sport. Without passion, they have no desire to catch the Frisbee. Without desire, they don’t have the increase in body’s power and they will not dive for the Frisbee because they are afraid of the pain when they land on the field. Passion is a powerful emotion. With passion, you can do anything even though it is impossible because you desire for it.
