Services
Paul H. Myer Consulting, in partnership with various agents across the country, provides
services to businesses seeking to reduce utility costs. We audit utility bills to insure that
charges are accurate. We make recommendations on possible rate plans that can save
money. And, where applicable, we are a broker/agent for competitive suppliers of
electricity and natural gas, as well as telecom services.
Some recent successes include the discovery of an overcharge by a natural gas utility, the
conversion of a business to a peak non-peak tariff, and the negotiation of a contract with
a competitive electrical supplier which resulted in sizeable savings.
Selection of Competitive Suppliers
Many states have deregulated the supply of electrical and natural gas services. Paul H.
Myer Consulting is a broker/agent of such services, as well as for telecommunication
services. We work in conjunction with partners across the country.
Paul H. Myer Consulting begins the process with an analysis of the current billing. Then
we submit the utility or telecom bills to all viable competitive suppliers operating in the
territory. We review all such bids and present the best alternative to the client.
Our process provides various supplier solutions and pricing scenarios, which we present
for review and discussion, eliminating the need to meet with multiple providers several
times. We communicate with supplier engineering and sales personnel, and coordinate
dialogue between vendors and the client when necessary. In addition, we provide simple,
honest, and straightforward differentiation between solutions and suppliers.
Audits
Many local utility bills are composed of ten to twenty rate elements. In most states that
have deregulated energy production, there are no longer easy calculations of the price
dependent on kilowatt hours for electricity or cubic feet for gas. Multiple factors are now
involved.
2. Charges must be audited relative to the published rate plan and all of its components. The
sample below shows a portion of a Dayton Power and Light bill with FIVE line items
which are composed of SIXTEEN riders, each of which may change each month.

Paul H. Myer Utility Consulting can perform such an audit. There may be errors in the
billing or there may be a better rate plan. These are the assessments made that will save
expenses.
Rate Plan Improvements
In most cases, the local utility has selected the tariff for your business, subject to public
utility requirements, but sometimes there are limitations and interpretations. After a
thorough audit of current bills, Paul H. Myer Consulting may make recommendations for
tariff changes. For example, one customer was placed in a rate group that was for
businesses whose demand was 50 kilowatts or more per month. However, this particular
customer demand averaged only approximately 25 kilowatts each month, while the utility
charged the business as if its demand were 50 kilowatts. And the demand component of
the bill was significant. Paul H. Myer Consulting proposed the correct rate plan and the
customer experienced a reduction in the electric bill.
In another case, a review determined that a peak versus non-peak plan would better suit
the customer. The customer had operations that extended on weekends and late at night.
Not all utility’s time of day plans are the same. The definition of peak and non-peak
varies regarding times of day. Also, the incentive to move to a time of day tariff may not
be worthwhile. While some utilities may offer different rates for kilowatt hours; others
may offer different rates for kilowatts. Clearly, careful analysis must be conducted.
