smugglers
And an enduring symbol of Scottish egalitarianism
In the nineteenth century whisky blenders were responsible for
the true democratisation of Scotch

But a nascent reactionary movement was already underway, led
by Scotland’s “best hated man”
A counter-revolution that has led to the animals taking over the farm, or the lunatics
taking over the asylum …
The repressive secret malt-whisky police of the counter-revolution
Experts, collectors and speculators have fuelled a secondary
market where spiralling prices have excluded all but the self-
appointed elite
Whilst rising prices generally have made the Scotch category less accessible in times
of austerity
Any attempts to open the category beyond the counter-
revolutionary cadre are met with fierce resistance and outrage
Led by a powerful and aggressive social-media presence
“You’re revisionists – enemies of the people”
So is now the time to break down the Wall ?
And give Scotch Whisky back to the people …

Who Are We? Why are we saying this?
No more kumbaya / let’s hold hands equality chit chat. This is about facts.

Just the Facts - What we’re dealing with here
globally• 190 heads of state -- 9 are women.
• Of all the people in parliament in the world, 13% are women.
• In the corporate sector in the US, women at the top, C-level jobs tops out at
15 / 16 %. The numbers have not moved since 2002 and are going in the
wrong direction.
• And even in the nonprofit world (a world we sometimes think of as being
led by more women), 20% are women.
BUT!
Half a dozen global studies, conducted by the likes of Goldman Sachs and
Columbia University, have found that companies employing women in large
numbers outperform their competitors on every measure of profitability.
What do we do with this?
What is Human Capital? Why is it important?
Human capital is the collective stock of the skills,
knowledge, and experience possessed by an individual or
population, viewed in terms of their value or cost to an
organization or country.
What does Human Capital have to do with Gender Equality?
More Equality =
More Opportunity to Incorporate Knowledge/Social
Attributes/Creativity =
More Potential for Prosperity!
Diminished Equality leads to Diminished Potential. Beware of who
you’re limiting!!
Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is the broadest quantitative measure of
a nation's total economic activity. More specifically, GDP represents the
monetary value of all goods and services produced within a nation's
geographic borders over a specified period of time.
Global Gender Gap Index is an index
designed to measure gender equality.
1 = equal
• More women in workforce = greater economic performance
• Greater female presence = ¼ of GDP in the US
• Reduction of Male:Female employment gap has grown EU economic growth
• Closing the gap = more $$
• Limiting women to work is EXPENSIVE.

Confidence matters just as much as competence.
Facts are, we’re biased.
So, even if I have the confidence and competence, the world’s view of me as
a woman, makes me seem lesser. Or, just a bitch.
PROBLEMS
• Women make babies
• Women aren’t made to confident in the workplace
• Our society is inherently sexist
Unfortunate realities
● Women are paid less in the service
● The is insane sexual harassment that happens in the service industry
that hinders confidence
● People think women are weak
BY RESTAURANT OPPORTUNITIES CENTERS UNITED
HOW DO WE CHANGE OUR INDUSTRY?
SOLUTIONS
• Think about how we can get maternity (AND paternity!) leave within
bars.
• Ask local government for help? Be active inside your bar community
• Get better paid sick leave.
• Raise minimum wage (I know… as a business owner this is hard, but
women suffer more. Fact).
• PROMOTE and encourage your female staff. Give them the confidence
to actually succeed. You will win in the end.

Fact). • PROMOTE and encourage your female staff. Give them the confidence to actually succeed. You will win in the end.
