This document provides an overview of JAX-RS, a Java API for developing RESTful web services. It notes that JAX-RS uses annotations to define resources, is HTTP-centric and server-side only, and can be deployed to servlet or SE environments. Examples show how to define a resource class with GET and PUT methods and a message body writer. The specification and API are available online and the 1.1 maintenance release is in progress. Five open-source implementations already exist including Jersey, RESTEasy, Restlet, CXF, and Triaxrs.
