Semester 1 (1996) – The Ragging, The Food, The Trains, The Thinning!

Lost 30 Kgs in 3 months Running Away in Trains`


Semester 1 – Culture Shock!!!! Awareness Shock!!!!

• Forced to do things you never wanted to do
• Saw things you never knew
• A lot of reasons for emotional drain, and to RUN AWAY!!!

Semester Performance: 2.92 out of 5.00 – Bad!!!


Semester 1 – Key Learnings

1. Bad GPA Score?
1. See the positive side: Passed all subjects!
2. Forget about the past, FOCUS ON THE FUTURE

2. For the first time, I saw the REAL WORLD

3. Life is not about running away, but FACING IT!

Live in Dhanbad for 4 years, you can live anywhere in the world!! 


Semester 2 – Semester 4

 Try and Improve GPA Score

 Live the culture of Dhanbad and ISM

 Start worrying about the JOB!



Semester 5 – ISS Elections

 Blindly supported a set of candidates who lost

 Key Learnings
• If you want to take sides, make sure you gauge
the candidates before you tell everyone which
side you are on
• Staying apolitical is an option. A lot of senior
leaders in organizations, are apolitical
• Politics does create enemies
• Politics enhances competition and brings the
best in the people, but within certain limits!

Politics cannot be removed, YOU HAVE TO PLAY THE GAME!



Semester 6 – My first Entrepreneurial Venture

 Chinese Fast Food Center
• Franchisee of a Restaurant from Bank More
 Market Analysis
• Large foot falls
• Students don’t want to go to Hirapur, Mani’s for food
• Students don’t have time for proper lunch / dinner
• Students don’t want to eat the same old canteen food!
 Investment INR ~20,000/-
 Profit INR ~20,000/- in 3 days!!
 Employees: students who did not want to attend the fest!!!

Beware of competitors. 4 restaurant’s sprung up next year.
All made losses, due to competition!
Where was I? Enjoying the fest!!!!




1. Find a gap in the market

2. Make money quickly before
competitors come in!

3. When competitors come in, go find a new market or a
new product / service! 


Semester 7 and 8 (1999-2000) – Placement Disappointment!

 Dream Job: NMDC
• Placed on Waiting List

 Failed to clear TELCO

 Growing Concern about Placement!

 OGPA: 3.92 / 5.00 i.e. about 78%

 Only other thing, I knew was SOFTWARE!



Semester 7 and 8 (1999-2000) – My Second Venture; but non-profit!

 NETMANIACS
• Founded by
 Pavan Kota
 Poornendu Chaturvedi
 Sanjay Vamja
• Concept is Simple:
 Learn software
 Teach it to ISM Student Community
• Highlights
 1 Batch starts with 15 students
 1 hour per batch after 7.00 P.M.
 In two months we were teaching 100+ students, 4 batches
 FREE!!

The Best Way to Learn, is by Teaching!


February 9th 2000 (Semester 8) – I got a job! Yippie!!!

 TATA Interactive Systems – The only
software company to come to the campus

 Thanks to the initiative of Mr. Amardeep
Saluja, ISM Alumni, Mineral Department

 Obviously the faculty recommended me
over others, given the large scale Mr. Amardeep Saluja
successful initiative we were running in ISM

 Two days later, NMDC confirmed, but I was
not interested!

What I could have done differently?

 Mingled more with students of
other states

• The organization needs your skills and capabilities

 When the above three conditions are satisfied, the organization
will take care of you.

 Else you will be naturally, taken for granted!
