4. WHO IS ROKU?

worth-your-time.html
Roku pioneered the idea of streaming directly to your television. The company sells a small box
that can access 4,500 different streaming channels including Netflix, Hulu and HBO Go.
Roku also licenses its operating system to smart TV manufacturers and cable and satellite
companies and has a bustling advertising business selling ad spots and brand sponsorships.
Cramer saw some clear positive to Roku's business model. First, the company is central to
consumers who are opting out of traditional cable providers and moving to web-based content
consumption. Plus, not only is Roku's user base accelerating, but users are progressively
watching more and more content.
5. STREAMING MARKET LEADER – ROKU

The reason for the company's stock success seem obvious. While companies like Aereo have
tried (and failed) to change TV, Roku has gotten along by putting out a solid product that plays
well with other technologies. For instance, Roku's first product was called the Netflix Box,
because it was the first device that let viewers stream digital movies to televisions (rather than
computers). Riding Netflix's popularity like a wave, Roku has practically become a household
name, with nearly 39 million people using one of its devices in July 2017—good for an industry
best 23%, ahead of Amazon, Apple, and Google.
6. NETFLIX AND ROKU

According to the regulatory filing, Roku had 15.1 million active user accounts as of
June 30, which stream an average of three hours of video daily. The company reported
average revenue per user of $11.22 as of the end of Q2, which it calculates based on
revenue and average number of active accounts during the preceding four fiscal
quarters; that was up 35% from ARPU of $8.32 a year earlier.
Roku in 2008 shipped the very first streaming-media player to watch Netflix, formed out
of a spinoff project from Netflix. Roku is based in Los Gatos, Calif., literally right next to
Netflix’s headquarters. Netflix alone accounts for about one-third of all hours streamed
on Roku devices.
Underwriters of Roku’s IPO are Morgan Stanley and Citigroup, as well as Allen & Co.,
Needham & Co., RBC Capital Markets, Oppenheimer & Co., and William Blair.
