Capita Lovejoy is part of the Foster + Partners / Gulf Consult JV that
won a limited international design competition for the new terminal
     building at Kuwait International Airport.

The concept for the design is based on the approach, entrance and
arrival sequence using three key Character Zones which includes a
predominately native soft landscape and structural landform, passing
into transitional zone with both native and non native species, into the
final zone at the building frontage of a formal 'oasis' where the
vocabulary spans the external / internal arrival spaces.

We have developed a sustainable approach to the landscape
masterplan, working in partnership with local plant nurseries and
specialists (such as the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research) to
utilise local desert species of soft planting to minimise the irrigation
demand and 'repair' the natural biodiversity of the area.

The design also seeks to maximise natural shade opportunities to
create a more suitable microclimate for the visitor and to create
shading for the infrastructure of the surrounding car park and
     arrival points.

North Terminal Strategic Development Study 2012

Client BAA
Date 2008
Services Masterplanning & Facilities Planning

Capita Symonds was appointed to provide BAA with a Strategic Master
Plan and Design Vision for the redevelopment of the North Terminal
complex at Gatwick Airport.

Gatwick Airport is the UK’s second busiest airport and is the world’s
most productive single runway operation with over 100 airlines serving
250 plus destinations. The North Terminal was expected to grow to
24mppa by 2012 from a current design capacity of 14mppa. This
growth was based upon the expansion of the easyJet low cost carrier
fleet at Gatwick and the movement of airlines from the South Terminal
which is operating beyond its design capacity.

The scope of the study addressed:

• Transport capacity and surface access
• Forecourt operations
• Multi-storey car parking developments
• Landside terminal capacity
• Revised check-in model to include CUSS and fast bag drop
• Landside and airside retail and commercial opportunities
• Conceptual and Preliminary design of a new midfield pier and
     connection to terminal.

The study identified future expansion potential including asset review
and potential cost of disposal scenario’s and proofing.

                                                                         13

     2020 Strategic Masterplan Study

     Client States of Jersey
     Date 2006
     Services Masterplanning

Capita Symonds undertook a study to review the proposed Masterplan
and Capital Expenditure (CapEx) programme for the period up to 2020.
The airport, owned and operated by the States of Jersey, was suffering
a downturn in traffic aligned to tourism which led to an intense
analysis of the airport and its requirements.

The 2020 plan was instigated to review the potential of the airport in
the long term and assist with balancing the requirements to maintain
the airport as a strategic island asset, whilst operating on a
     commercial basis.

The master plan study included a review of the current market,
existing infrastructure and predicted future demand. Key decision
points were the replacement of the main control tower and operations
building, originally constructed in 1937, along with a new commercial
hanger and the extension and refurbishment of the freight terminal.

Long term projects included a new primary radar, new baggage
handling system and resurfacing of the runway. The CapEx programme
called for a balance of airport assets with the longer term safeguarding
of the potential expansion of the airport.

Bristol Airport

Masterplan and Terminal Extension Programme

Client Bristol Airport
Date 2004 – 2006
Services Project Management

At the time of the project, Bristol Airport was the fastest growing
regional airport in the UK and had ambitious plans to continue to
grow. Current demand was at 4 million passengers per annum and this
was projected to rise to over 6 million by 2007. Hence this would be a
challenge for the current terminal building that opened in 2000 and
which was already operating at design capacity.

Capita Symonds was appointed overall Programme Managers at the
airport in 2002 and in September 2004 was asked to lead the
Masterplan study and the new terminal extension programme.

The airport’s expansion programme was a £17m phased development
providing additional capacity in:

• Terminal Check-in, and Departures
• A new Western Pier
• Additional aircraft stand capacity
• Baggage reclaim
• Arrivals capacity.

The Phase 1 re-development at Luton Airport was required to increase
the capacity of the Airport from 3.4 to 5 million passengers per annum.
Part of the development works involved the construction of a new
£40m Terminal Building housing check-in desks and major retail and
catering outlets. The works were undertaken under a Public Private
Partnership (PPP), between Luton Borough Council and a construction
and operating consortium comprising:- Barclays Bank, Airports Group
International and Bechtel Enterprises. The consortium formed a new
operating company called London Luton Airport Operations Ltd.

The first stage of the Capita Symonds commission consisted of a
technical due diligence exercise on behalf of the lending bank. This
involved examining the design documents, programme, cost plan and
form of contract. Capita Symonds used their own internal specialists to
     cover the following areas:

     • Geotechnical
     • Environmental
     • Structural
     • Civils airside & landside

Capita Symonds is delivering the civil engineering design of a 300m
runway extension and resurfacing of the remainder of the runway
(utilising an un-grooved ‘BBA’ surface course for the first time in the
UK), along with works required for the relocation of the runway
thresholds and associated AGL infrastructure. New approach lighting
will be provided at each end of the runway, with the lighting having to
accommodate a railway line just outside the airfield boundary.

The Capita Symonds’ rail team has also provided support for the design
of the required services crossing under the railway, including liaison
     with Network Rail.

The project also includes a review of the whole of the airfield drainage,
and the development of a strategy to address the increased use of de-

     Client Stobart Developments Ltd
     Date Completed 2010
     Value £5m
Services Civil Engineering Design, Aircraft Pavement Design, AGL Layout
                 Design, Contract Documentation, Geotechnical Engineering

Capita Symonds provided the civil engineering design services for the
refurbishment and upgrade of the main runway at Carlisle Airport.

The project comprised the design for the complete refurbishment of
the existing runway to bring it up to a standard suitable for use by
small commercial airliners up to Boeing 737 size, and included
significant reprofiling of the existing runway to bring it into compliance
     with CAA and ICAO criteria.

The old runway was in a poor condition, and unusually incorporated a
longitudinal drainage channel in the middle of the runway pavement.
The design incorporated extensive recycling of the old runway
construction and optimisation of levels to minimise the associated
earthworks to the runway strip, together with design of new surface
     water drainage.

The wider project also included the design of a major distribution
centre (£15m project value) adjacent to the airport, for which Capita
Symonds provided all civil and structural engineering design.

Western Airside Walkway

Client Bristol Airport
Date 2007 – 2009
Value £8m
Services Structural & Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering

Capita Symonds delivered design services of a 480m long pedestrian
elevated walkway serving nine new Pre Board Zones with future
potential expansion safeguarded. The project included two elevated
bridge links to the terminal building which meant significant
modification to the existing terminal building. There were two further
bridge links to deal with access roads from the airport with spans in
the order of 30+m.

Due to the complexity of the geology on the site; (vertically
outcropping limestone with numerous dissolution features) we
developed a raft type complex foundation solution. The walkway route
also passes over an existing major services corridor which provides
essential feeds to the control tower. In a very constrained site, a design
was developed to divert services from under the walkway whilst
maintaining all the airport operations.

Capita Symonds also designed the new access road to the apron
around the rear of the new building: this included dealing with the
infrastructure modifications.

The final design was developed to maximise speed of construction and
to minimise temporary works, and was carried out over a two month
period to allow for tendering and to meet the construction
programme.

                                                                             23

     Date Completed 2009
     Value £17.5m
     Services Lead Design Consultants

Capita Symonds was the Lead Design Consultant for a new ten-bay
Eurofighter Typhoon Maintenance hangar that was delivered in 67
weeks on time and budget. Built on a disused Greenfield site, it enables
specialist ‘deep maintenance’ of the aircraft which are serviced by
moving through bays spanning the full length of the building in two
streams. Each bay has been completed with mechanical, compressed
     air, hydraulic and electrical services.

The hangar covers approximately 11,640sqm and comprises of an
     annexe housing:

     • Support workshops
     • Hardened avionic regional centre for the development and
maintenance of electronic equipment used to control the aircraft
     • Electrical and instrument workshop
     • Structures workshop, windscreen and canopy bay and office
         accommodation.

The building is complete with stores, messing areas, locker rooms,
showers, plant and a 300 space car park. The offices and workshops
are designed to provide personnel with excellent working conditions
with large windows allowing the hangar to be seen from the offices.
The new facility can withstand robust usage with the flexibility to
accommodate future expansion. The project achieved a ‘Very Good’
BREEM rating and is also fully DDA compliant.

Ryanair Hangar

Client East Midlands Training (Ryanair)
Date Completed 2008
Value £8m
Services Architectural Design & Lead Consultant
Award UK Structural Steel Design Award 2009

Ryanair's new hangar at Stansted Airport combines the provision of an
airside maintenance hangar with landside staff training facilities, and
was constructed by Kier Eastern as a D&B project. In line with
Ryanair's business philosophy, the architecture is simple and low cost
whilst still providing for robust construction and finishes which will
stand up to heavy use. The building's form was shaped by the
minimum size required for the housing of large commercial aircraft,
with suitable working clearance for maintenance staff. The building
envelope is comprised of cost effective profiled sheet metal composite
cladding, in Ryanair's chosen colours.

The hangar is capable of accommodating five Boeing 737's, accessed
through a 125m wide door, which is supposedly the widest clear door
opening in Europe. A cavernous interior was created by incorporating a
10m deep, single spanning truss structure, which received a UK Structural
Steel Design Award in 2009. The Award Judge summarised the building
as 'a fine example of an optimised long-span structure, at minimum
cost, with fast erection. A text book example of the direct approach'.

Three storey training facilities were provided, with a landside car park
and new road links. These facilities included two Flight Simulator
Modules, and an aeroplane fuselage section for cabin crew training.
There are also reception areas, offices, training and other ancillary rooms.

     Date 2006 – 2007
     Value £10m
     Services Lead Consultant & Architecture

The demand for additional check-in facilities at Dublin Airport led the
DAA to identify an unused basement area as a new check-in zone.

The concept used innovative lighting techniques and materials
normally used externally, such as terracotta panels, to give the
impression of natural daylight, as if above ground.

The fast-track programme forced us to investigate pre-fabrication and
systems that could be installed quickly. This extended to the
ceiling/lighting units, check-in desks and wall finishes.

Terminal 1 - Pier D Connection

Client Dublin Airport Authority (Formally Aer Rianta)
Date 2004 – 2007
Services Structural Engineering

Capita Symonds provided the expert structural engineering design for
the new Pier D connector from the existing Terminal 1.

Working in conjunction with a local consultant partner, our team of
engineers undertook the detailed design of this unique structure which
curves through 90 degrees on plan.

The structural solution was designed to minimise the impact on the
existing surrounding structure with the cable stayed mast supports
allowing a maximum span potential to be utilised.

                                                                         27

     Date 2007
     Value £305m
     Services Lead Consultant & Architecture

Concourse C was the final phase of the Terminal 5 development at
Heathrow Airport. The concept was developed by Richard Rogers in
2004 and was deliberately set to one side with the intention of
     resuming design development in 2007.

Capita Symonds Architecture was engaged by BAA mid 2007 to
undertake a peer review of the concept and guide it through scheme
     design stage.

Concourse C is a high quality, cost effective satellite pier. Its wave-
form roof and glazed facades are consistent with the design and
quality of the other buildings in the T5 family.

The 53,000 sqm building consists of four levels above ground, and a
basement structure, housing a station for the Tracked Transit System.

Terminal 3, Pier 6

Client BAA
Date 2005 – 2006
Value £100m
Services Architecture & Interior Design

BAA’s first new dedicated facility for the A380 aircraft at Pier 6 in
Terminal 3 at Heathrow, became fully operational in 2006. Shortly
after the Pier opened it hosted the inaugural trial visit of the A380 to
the airport.

Capita Symonds was appointed to complete the design and detailing
of the pier fit-out along with ramp level accommodation.

This £100m project involved the demolition of part of the existing
Pier 6 and provision of a new segregated building incorporating
flexible, open gate lounges to serve four A380 stands.

The Pier 6 project utilised our experience from recently completed
projects, such as the Pier 5 Segregation project and our team was able
to work closely with the contractor and suppliers to deliver a first-rate
facility.

                                                                            29

The segregation of arriving and departing passengers at Pier 5
Terminal 3 was the first of its kind at Heathrow following a DfT
directive in response to the 9/11 terrorist attacks in the US.

The innovative solution included a series of new vertical circulation
cores (VCC’s) connecting to a new arrivals level sited on the roof of the
existing pier. Corridor sections were pre-assembled off-site at a remote
facility and installed during night working periods.

We were appointed to provide detailed design for the fit-out of all
areas and design fixed links and connectors (also assembled off-site).

North & South Apron Reconstruction

Client Jersey Airport
Date July 2006 – June 2007
Value £12m
Services Civil Engineering Design & Project Management

Capita Symonds was the Project Manager and Lead Designer for the
reconstruction of the North and South Aprons at Jersey Airport.

The works consisted of the demolition of the old aircraft parking
aprons on the surrounding of the passenger pier, and the construction
of new concrete pavements designed to accommodate all current and
proposed aircraft types likely to use the airport. The old concrete
paving was crushed and recycled for use in the new construction, so
minimising both the import of fresh aggregates and the off-site
disposal of waste.

Also included was substantial surface water drainage infrastructure,
including pollution control measures: a fuel interceptor, aeration pond
and reed beds were provided to manage and treat discharges from the
airfield. The aeration pond included an innovative lightweight netted
cover to deter birds. Additionally, the project included aeronautical
ground lighting, and a new fixed electrical ground power distribution
and metering system, with outlets at each of the new stands.

Capita Symonds undertook the detailed design of the new aircraft
pavements, aeronautical ground lighting, and surface water drainage.

Under a separate appointment, Capita Symonds provided Project
Management services through to successful completion of the works.

                                                                          31

     Runway Reprofiling and Resurfacing

     Client Jersey Airport
     Date February 2007 – July 2009
     Value £15m
Services Project Management & Civil Engineering

Capita Symonds was appointed as Project Managers and Designers for
the Runway Resurfacing and Associated Works contract at Jersey
Airport that was constructed by Volker Fitzpatrick. This was a major
strategic project critical for the continued safe operation of the airport.
The existing runway surface had exceeded its original design life of
15 years and following a CAA audit in 2007, a number of operational
changes were needed to be made to comply with the CAA/ICAO
guidance, as well as to replace the running surface to improve drainage
     and friction characteristics.

     Work on the runway included:

     • Replacement of the existing running surface
     • Geometric changes to the runway profile to reduce the vertical and
          transverse curves to improve running
     • Upgrade of the Aeronautical Ground Lighting (AGL) to meet the
          latest ICAO/CAA guidance
     • Replacement of the AGL control system
     • Improvements to the drainage network and outfalls
     • Strengthening works to the main runway and taxiway links at
          Delta, Echo and Golf
     • Cleaning, re-sealing of joints and improvements to surface texture
of the concrete at the eastern end of the runway.

The works commenced in September 2008 and were completed June
2009 on time and within budget.

Bristol Airport

Runway Resurfacing

Client Bristol International Airport
Date September 2006 – April 2007
Value £13m
Services Project Management

Capita Symonds was the Project Manager for the resurfacing of the
runway and taxiways at Bristol Airport in 2006-07.

At the time of the project the airport was a busy and rapidly growing
regional airport handling approximately 7 million passengers and over
85,000 commercial aircraft movements per year. Capita Symonds
supported the airport by providing Project and Contract Administration
services for the scheme design, tendering and construction processes.

The project had to be planned and implemented to a very demanding
timescale to suit the airport's commercial requirements, meaning that
the runway works were carried out at night and over the winter period.

The electrical works involved the complete re-cabling of the runway
and taxiway lighting, provision of new illuminated signage,
modification of the AGL Control System, and the upgrade of the
associated sub-stations. For the first time under a project of this type,
CAT III runway lighting was maintained virtually throughout the
construction period, through careful programming and management of
the works.

Despite the difficulties encountered, the works were successfully
completed on time and within budget.

                                                                            37
Airport Expansion Programme

     Client Bristol Airport
     Date Completed 2005
     Value £8m
     Services Project Management

Bristol Airport's existing terminal building was opened in March 2000
with a design capacity of 3 million passengers per year which was
projected to rise to over 6 million by 2007. The airport's expansion
programme was a £17m phased development over four years to
provide additional capacity in Check-in, Departure Gates, Airside
Passenger Terminal to Aircraft transfer and Baggage Reclaim. The initial
phase was a fast-track £8m extension to provide 16 additional Check-
in desks, with dedicated state of the art baggage handling and
screening facilities, an extended and updated Arrivals Reclaim Hall and
associated service upgrades and airside infrastructure.

Capita Symonds was appointed overall Project Manager in September
2004 with the daunting task of delivering project completion by May
2005 against an uncertain, but fixed, budget and with only a concept
design. Proactive design team management, coupled with the adoption
of a truly integrated, risk managed, 2-stage traditional procurement
process, but with early contractor involvement and package selection
ensured a timely start on site.

The project was completed on time and within budget in early May
2005 therefore allowing the airport to commence international flights
     to US.

  • 12. Kuwait International Airport Landscape Masterplan Client Foster + Partners & Gulf Consult Date Current Value Services Landscape Masterplan, Landscape Design Capita Lovejoy is part of the Foster + Partners / Gulf Consult JV that won a limited international design competition for the new terminal building at Kuwait International Airport. The concept for the design is based on the approach, entrance and arrival sequence using three key Character Zones which includes a predominately native soft landscape and structural landform, passing into transitional zone with both native and non native species, into the final zone at the building frontage of a formal 'oasis' where the vocabulary spans the external / internal arrival spaces. We have developed a sustainable approach to the landscape masterplan, working in partnership with local plant nurseries and specialists (such as the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research) to utilise local desert species of soft planting to minimise the irrigation demand and 'repair' the natural biodiversity of the area. The design also seeks to maximise natural shade opportunities to create a more suitable microclimate for the visitor and to create shading for the infrastructure of the surrounding car park and arrival points. 10

  • 24. Carlisle Airport Runway rehabilitation Client Stobart Developments Ltd Date Completed 2010 Value £5m Services Civil Engineering Design, Aircraft Pavement Design, AGL Layout Design, Contract Documentation, Geotechnical Engineering Capita Symonds provided the civil engineering design services for the refurbishment and upgrade of the main runway at Carlisle Airport. The project comprised the design for the complete refurbishment of the existing runway to bring it up to a standard suitable for use by small commercial airliners up to Boeing 737 size, and included significant reprofiling of the existing runway to bring it into compliance with CAA and ICAO criteria. The old runway was in a poor condition, and unusually incorporated a longitudinal drainage channel in the middle of the runway pavement. The design incorporated extensive recycling of the old runway construction and optimisation of levels to minimise the associated earthworks to the runway strip, together with design of new surface water drainage. The wider project also included the design of a major distribution centre (£15m project value) adjacent to the airport, for which Capita Symonds provided all civil and structural engineering design. 22
  • 25. Bristol Airport Western Airside Walkway Client Bristol Airport Date 2007 – 2009 Value £8m Services Structural & Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering Capita Symonds delivered design services of a 480m long pedestrian elevated walkway serving nine new Pre Board Zones with future potential expansion safeguarded. The project included two elevated bridge links to the terminal building which meant significant modification to the existing terminal building. There were two further bridge links to deal with access roads from the airport with spans in the order of 30+m. Due to the complexity of the geology on the site; (vertically outcropping limestone with numerous dissolution features) we developed a raft type complex foundation solution. The walkway route also passes over an existing major services corridor which provides essential feeds to the control tower. In a very constrained site, a design was developed to divert services from under the walkway whilst maintaining all the airport operations. Capita Symonds also designed the new access road to the apron around the rear of the new building: this included dealing with the infrastructure modifications. The final design was developed to maximise speed of construction and to minimise temporary works, and was carried out over a two month period to allow for tendering and to meet the construction programme. 23

The offices and workshops are designed to provide personnel with excellent working conditions with large windows allowing the hangar to be seen from the offices. The new facility can withstand robust usage with the flexibility to accommodate future expansion. The project achieved a ‘Very Good’ BREEM rating and is also fully DDA compliant. 24
  • 27. Stansted Airport Ryanair Hangar Client East Midlands Training (Ryanair) Date Completed 2008 Value £8m Services Architectural Design & Lead Consultant Award UK Structural Steel Design Award 2009 Ryanair's new hangar at Stansted Airport combines the provision of an airside maintenance hangar with landside staff training facilities, and was constructed by Kier Eastern as a D&B project. In line with Ryanair's business philosophy, the architecture is simple and low cost whilst still providing for robust construction and finishes which will stand up to heavy use. The building's form was shaped by the minimum size required for the housing of large commercial aircraft, with suitable working clearance for maintenance staff. The building envelope is comprised of cost effective profiled sheet metal composite cladding, in Ryanair's chosen colours. The hangar is capable of accommodating five Boeing 737's, accessed through a 125m wide door, which is supposedly the widest clear door opening in Europe. A cavernous interior was created by incorporating a 10m deep, single spanning truss structure, which received a UK Structural Steel Design Award in 2009. The Award Judge summarised the building as 'a fine example of an optimised long-span structure, at minimum cost, with fast erection. A text book example of the direct approach'. Three storey training facilities were provided, with a landside car park and new road links. These facilities included two Flight Simulator Modules, and an aeroplane fuselage section for cabin crew training. There are also reception areas, offices, training and other ancillary rooms. 25
  • 28. Dublin Airport Terminal 1 - Check-in Area 14 Client Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) Date 2006 – 2007 Value £10m Services Lead Consultant & Architecture The demand for additional check-in facilities at Dublin Airport led the DAA to identify an unused basement area as a new check-in zone. The concept used innovative lighting techniques and materials normally used externally, such as terracotta panels, to give the impression of natural daylight, as if above ground. The fast-track programme forced us to investigate pre-fabrication and systems that could be installed quickly. This extended to the ceiling/lighting units, check-in desks and wall finishes. 26
  • 29. Terminal 1 - Pier D Connection Client Dublin Airport Authority (Formally Aer Rianta) Date 2004 – 2007 Services Structural Engineering Capita Symonds provided the expert structural engineering design for the new Pier D connector from the existing Terminal 1. Working in conjunction with a local consultant partner, our team of engineers undertook the detailed design of this unique structure which curves through 90 degrees on plan. The structural solution was designed to minimise the impact on the existing surrounding structure with the cable stayed mast supports allowing a maximum span potential to be utilised. 27
  • 30. Heathrow Airport Terminal 5, Concourse C Client BAA Date 2007 Value £305m Services Lead Consultant & Architecture Concourse C was the final phase of the Terminal 5 development at Heathrow Airport. The concept was developed by Richard Rogers in 2004 and was deliberately set to one side with the intention of resuming design development in 2007. Capita Symonds Architecture was engaged by BAA mid 2007 to undertake a peer review of the concept and guide it through scheme design stage. Concourse C is a high quality, cost effective satellite pier. Its wave- form roof and glazed facades are consistent with the design and quality of the other buildings in the T5 family. The 53,000 sqm building consists of four levels above ground, and a basement structure, housing a station for the Tracked Transit System. 28
  • 31. Terminal 3, Pier 6 Client BAA Date 2005 – 2006 Value £100m Services Architecture & Interior Design BAA’s first new dedicated facility for the A380 aircraft at Pier 6 in Terminal 3 at Heathrow, became fully operational in 2006. Shortly after the Pier opened it hosted the inaugural trial visit of the A380 to the airport. Capita Symonds was appointed to complete the design and detailing of the pier fit-out along with ramp level accommodation. This £100m project involved the demolition of part of the existing Pier 6 and provision of a new segregated building incorporating flexible, open gate lounges to serve four A380 stands. The Pier 6 project utilised our experience from recently completed projects, such as the Pier 5 Segregation project and our team was able to work closely with the contractor and suppliers to deliver a first-rate facility. 29

  • 38. Jersey Airport Runway Reprofiling and Resurfacing Client Jersey Airport Date February 2007 – July 2009 Value £15m Services Project Management & Civil Engineering Capita Symonds was appointed as Project Managers and Designers for the Runway Resurfacing and Associated Works contract at Jersey Airport that was constructed by Volker Fitzpatrick. This was a major strategic project critical for the continued safe operation of the airport. The existing runway surface had exceeded its original design life of 15 years and following a CAA audit in 2007, a number of operational changes were needed to be made to comply with the CAA/ICAO guidance, as well as to replace the running surface to improve drainage and friction characteristics. Work on the runway included: • Replacement of the existing running surface • Geometric changes to the runway profile to reduce the vertical and transverse curves to improve running • Upgrade of the Aeronautical Ground Lighting (AGL) to meet the latest ICAO/CAA guidance • Replacement of the AGL control system • Improvements to the drainage network and outfalls • Strengthening works to the main runway and taxiway links at Delta, Echo and Golf • Cleaning, re-sealing of joints and improvements to surface texture of the concrete at the eastern end of the runway. The works commenced in September 2008 and were completed June 2009 on time and within budget. 36
  • 39. Bristol Airport Runway Resurfacing Client Bristol International Airport Date September 2006 – April 2007 Value £13m Services Project Management Capita Symonds was the Project Manager for the resurfacing of the runway and taxiways at Bristol Airport in 2006-07. At the time of the project the airport was a busy and rapidly growing regional airport handling approximately 7 million passengers and over 85,000 commercial aircraft movements per year. Capita Symonds supported the airport by providing Project and Contract Administration services for the scheme design, tendering and construction processes. The project had to be planned and implemented to a very demanding timescale to suit the airport's commercial requirements, meaning that the runway works were carried out at night and over the winter period. The electrical works involved the complete re-cabling of the runway and taxiway lighting, provision of new illuminated signage, modification of the AGL Control System, and the upgrade of the associated sub-stations. For the first time under a project of this type, CAT III runway lighting was maintained virtually throughout the construction period, through careful programming and management of the works. Despite the difficulties encountered, the works were successfully completed on time and within budget. 37
  • 40. Airport Expansion Programme Client Bristol Airport Date Completed 2005 Value £8m Services Project Management Bristol Airport's existing terminal building was opened in March 2000 with a design capacity of 3 million passengers per year which was projected to rise to over 6 million by 2007. The airport's expansion programme was a £17m phased development over four years to provide additional capacity in Check-in, Departure Gates, Airside Passenger Terminal to Aircraft transfer and Baggage Reclaim. The initial phase was a fast-track £8m extension to provide 16 additional Check- in desks, with dedicated state of the art baggage handling and screening facilities, an extended and updated Arrivals Reclaim Hall and associated service upgrades and airside infrastructure. Capita Symonds was appointed overall Project Manager in September 2004 with the daunting task of delivering project completion by May 2005 against an uncertain, but fixed, budget and with only a concept design. Proactive design team management, coupled with the adoption of a truly integrated, risk managed, 2-stage traditional procurement process, but with early contractor involvement and package selection ensured a timely start on site. The project was completed on time and within budget in early May 2005 therefore allowing the airport to commence international flights to US. 38
