Client Foster + Partners & Gulf Consult
Date Current
Value
Services Landscape Masterplan, Landscape Design
Capita Lovejoy is part of the Foster + Partners / Gulf Consult JV that
won a limited international design competition for the new terminal
building at Kuwait International Airport.
The concept for the design is based on the approach, entrance and
arrival sequence using three key Character Zones which includes a
predominately native soft landscape and structural landform, passing
into transitional zone with both native and non native species, into the
final zone at the building frontage of a formal 'oasis' where the
vocabulary spans the external / internal arrival spaces.
We have developed a sustainable approach to the landscape
masterplan, working in partnership with local plant nurseries and
specialists (such as the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research) to
utilise local desert species of soft planting to minimise the irrigation
demand and 'repair' the natural biodiversity of the area.
The design also seeks to maximise natural shade opportunities to
create a more suitable microclimate for the visitor and to create
shading for the infrastructure of the surrounding car park and
arrival points.

Design, Contract Documentation, Geotechnical Engineering
Capita Symonds provided the civil engineering design services for the
refurbishment and upgrade of the main runway at Carlisle Airport.
The project comprised the design for the complete refurbishment of
the existing runway to bring it up to a standard suitable for use by
small commercial airliners up to Boeing 737 size, and included
significant reprofiling of the existing runway to bring it into compliance
with CAA and ICAO criteria.
The old runway was in a poor condition, and unusually incorporated a
longitudinal drainage channel in the middle of the runway pavement.
The design incorporated extensive recycling of the old runway
construction and optimisation of levels to minimise the associated
earthworks to the runway strip, together with design of new surface
water drainage.
The wider project also included the design of a major distribution
centre (£15m project value) adjacent to the airport, for which Capita

25. Bristol Airport
Western Airside Walkway
Client Bristol Airport
Date 2007 – 2009
Value £8m
Services Structural & Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering
Capita Symonds delivered design services of a 480m long pedestrian
elevated walkway serving nine new Pre Board Zones with future
potential expansion safeguarded. The project included two elevated
bridge links to the terminal building which meant significant
modification to the existing terminal building. There were two further
bridge links to deal with access roads from the airport with spans in
the order of 30+m.
Due to the complexity of the geology on the site; (vertically
outcropping limestone with numerous dissolution features) we
developed a raft type complex foundation solution. The walkway route
also passes over an existing major services corridor which provides
essential feeds to the control tower. In a very constrained site, a design
was developed to divert services from under the walkway whilst
maintaining all the airport operations.
Capita Symonds also designed the new access road to the apron
around the rear of the new building: this included dealing with the
infrastructure modifications.
The final design was developed to maximise speed of construction and
to minimise temporary works, and was carried out over a two month
period to allow for tendering and to meet the construction
programme.

27. Stansted Airport
Ryanair Hangar
Client East Midlands Training (Ryanair)
Date Completed 2008
Value £8m
Services Architectural Design & Lead Consultant
Award UK Structural Steel Design Award 2009
Ryanair's new hangar at Stansted Airport combines the provision of an
airside maintenance hangar with landside staff training facilities, and
was constructed by Kier Eastern as a D&B project. In line with
Ryanair's business philosophy, the architecture is simple and low cost
whilst still providing for robust construction and finishes which will
stand up to heavy use. The building's form was shaped by the
minimum size required for the housing of large commercial aircraft,
with suitable working clearance for maintenance staff. The building
envelope is comprised of cost effective profiled sheet metal composite
cladding, in Ryanair's chosen colours.
The hangar is capable of accommodating five Boeing 737's, accessed
through a 125m wide door, which is supposedly the widest clear door
opening in Europe. A cavernous interior was created by incorporating a
10m deep, single spanning truss structure, which received a UK Structural
Steel Design Award in 2009. The Award Judge summarised the building
as 'a fine example of an optimised long-span structure, at minimum
cost, with fast erection. A text book example of the direct approach'.
Three storey training facilities were provided, with a landside car park
and new road links. These facilities included two Flight Simulator
Modules, and an aeroplane fuselage section for cabin crew training.
There are also reception areas, offices, training and other ancillary rooms.

Date Completed 2005
Value £8m
Services Project Management
Bristol Airport's existing terminal building was opened in March 2000
with a design capacity of 3 million passengers per year which was
projected to rise to over 6 million by 2007. The airport's expansion
programme was a £17m phased development over four years to
provide additional capacity in Check-in, Departure Gates, Airside
Passenger Terminal to Aircraft transfer and Baggage Reclaim. The initial
phase was a fast-track £8m extension to provide 16 additional Check-
in desks, with dedicated state of the art baggage handling and
screening facilities, an extended and updated Arrivals Reclaim Hall and
associated service upgrades and airside infrastructure.
Capita Symonds was appointed overall Project Manager in September
2004 with the daunting task of delivering project completion by May
2005 against an uncertain, but fixed, budget and with only a concept
design. Proactive design team management, coupled with the adoption
of a truly integrated, risk managed, 2-stage traditional procurement
process, but with early contractor involvement and package selection
ensured a timely start on site.
The project was completed on time and within budget in early May
2005 therefore allowing the airport to commence international flights
to US.
