This article shows analyzing the tactics used by police and SWAT teams. It looks into
police militarization and how this can be a scare tactic towards protestors. This 2014 article was
written in the wake of what many say is a time of police brutality towards black males. This
article also talks about this situation and how the police are involved. This article has credibility
from the fact that it is an academic journal written by a man who has written many on this topic.
Its credibility is also shown from its plentiful of sources from which the information was
collected.

On this website, Statista, a statistic from a poll was done with around one thousand
people that questioned if new civil rights laws are needed to reduce discrimination against
blacks. The source states that many of the participants are non-Hispanic blacks. Sixty one
percent of them said that new civil rights laws are needed. This source shows credibility from the
website it comes from which only provides accurate and unbiased statistics from real people.

The website for Dissent Magazine has this piece on how the black lives matter movement
is the next civil rights movement. It states that the black lives matter movement has put police
reform on the policy agenda for our government and has brought to attention that the American
society should reconsider how it values black lives. This source has credibility from its author,
Fredrick C. Harris, who is a professor of political science and director of the Center on African-
American Politics and Society at Columbia University.

This article reports on protests in New York City on December 3, 2014 after the Supreme
Court’s ruling of the case where Eric Garner was detained by police on July 17, 2014. A video
surfaced of a cop who had Garner in a chokehold and Garner is heard stating, “I can’t breathe.”
Garner was pronounced dead at the hospital an hour later. Protests lasted two days in the streets
of NYC and a few events such as a Christmas tree lighting. Police predicted 10,000 people
protested over the two days. Only 300 arrests were made for mostly disorderly conduct. This
article shows that modern civil rights protests like black lives matter can be peaceful and still
matter. This article has credibility from its sources and of its location on World News Digest.

Bill Clinton, Charles Hamilton, and Carol Swain. This book studies the relationship between race
and American politics. A wide variety of perspectives on the subject on a part of this book. This
book shows how in our world of politics, that reform is often needed and how our government
system has changed over the years. This book is a good choice with credibility because of its
influence from people of our civil rights and our political system.
