2. Goals for Today
• Discuss the main goals of the redesign
• Look at potential themes to use for the site
• Review different aspects of the design (font, color, functionality)
• Agree on next steps and a timeline for action
3. Site Goals
• Clean, professional layout that is very image-heavy
• Seamless, scrolling and dynamic – let’s make the site
active and engaging
• Friendly voice
• Staff section
• Plain, simple and prominent calls to action from every
section of the site
5. Theme: Foundation
Includes:
• Staff bio section
• Donation widget
• Blog section
• Call to action widgets
• Slideshow with captions
• Features page
• My Take: Easy-to-use, straight-ahead layout. Simple to
implement, with great donation tools to highlight any upcoming
campaigns.
7. Theme: Mission
Includes:
• Directors section and circular photo placement and left/right alignment, which would look
great on staff bio page
• Alternate page layout with slider: good or programs page, or showcasing more photos
• Crisp, modern design
• Blog section
• A variety of page layouts to support different sections
My Take: I think this has the cleanest, most dynamic layout of all the options I’m presenting. If
we’re looking for something more modern, this may be the best option. I think it may take
extra work to get photos resized/re-taken to fit the theme’s layout, but overall, it’s a nice
look. I don’t think it includes every single feature we would want, but it does have most of
them, and the optional logo button on the main image slider would look great if we do
commission a new logo design.
9. Theme: Go Green
Includes:
• Dynamic photo slider on main page
• Team page with space for group photo (this could be adapted to showcase all
the different villages, or even different programs)
• Space for a new logo in the header
• Built-in accordion and tabs section, which could be utilized for the programs and
villages sections
My Take: Like the Modern theme, it lacks a prominent sidebar, so we’d need to
make sure all call-outs and important messages are in the navigation page. It’s
not as text-heavy above the fold, so the images and captions would have to
provide much of the messaging right off the bat.
11. Theme: Advocate
Includes:
• Nice drop-down menus for ease of navigation
• Multiple gallery layouts for great photo displays
• Events page and calendar
My Take: We may need to make some typographic changes here, but overall, it’s a
clean layout with plenty of options for photo presentation. The Donate page on
the theme demo is versatile and provides a lot of different options for
messaging. The gallery section is great for displaying photos, but the lack of
space for text and descriptions may hinder our ability to ad context to imagery.
12. Fonts
• Fonts
I think two main fonts should cover the bases. The primary font should be bold, easy to
read, and have a note of seriousness. The secondary font should be simple and
straightforward. Here are a few font suggestions that I think might work, which have
relevance to the mission and values of GVH.
• Chunkfive
• Sanchez
• Futurab (example)
13. Color Choices
During the last meeting, members expressed a fondness for a blue/green color scheme. With that in
mind, here’s a color swatch that may work well for the site. I like the simple colors, bright colors.
14. Functionality
Collaboration tool for Volunteers: Meet Buddypress
• Buddypress is a social media plugin for Wordpress that allows us to set up a
private social network for users within the GVH site.
• I suggest starting slow with this plugin, which allows us to create up to six private
pages only accessible after logging in. We can create a sidebar login and build
out separate pages for planning trips, sharing photos, etc.
15. Plugins for Writing
During last weekend’s Wordcamp, I came across a suite of plugins that can be used to help
organize and maintain copy across the site. When implemented ahead of time, this should
make content organization and scheduling much easier for the team.
• Content Audit Plugin
• Dashboard Analytics
• Edit Flow
• There are also a number of editorial calendar plugins that can help organize publication
schedules.
16. Timeline
Next Steps:
• Kelsey’s content map provides a great roadmap for where the site is going.
Once we get approval of that setup, I can begin working on building out the site.
I believe three-four weeks is sufficient from the time that format is approved to
when I can present a functional site in staging. I can work in tandem with her to
merge the copy and site layout.
Outstanding issues:
• Photos
• Theme approval
• Logo
