1. Why Modular?
Good Question.
The trend to purchase and utilize
modular building systems is increasing
with no end in sight and for good
reason. By pre-engineering, designing,
and prefabricating in an automated
controlled environment, we are able
to provide you greater value over
conventional construction methods.
How can modular,
prefabricated buildings
produce greater value?
• Controlled factory environment
– no on-site weather problems,
vandalism, theft, or set-up time.
• Purchasing power – bulk buying
and pre-inspection of material by
trained personnel.
•Trained production workers –
more efficient than mobile and
untrained field construction workers.
•Quality control – Inspection for
pre-established tolerances and
quality standards.
•Organized production labor –
Set-up time is minimized, limiting
sub-contractor coordination.
•Engineering and designs –
produced with standards that are
set forth prior to starting production.
•Value adding designs –
standardized for the most
economical solutions and fast
production process.
What advantages does modular hold over conventional construction methods?
Pre-designed.
Pre-engineered.
Complete detailing package: including
specifications and all components
necessary to place order at no charge.
Quality inspected and approved
materials. Volume purchasing power for
lower cost.
Prefabricated to minimize an
interruption of production. (Less
Time—Less Mess–Less Noise)
Easily expandable system manufactured
to match in appearance and to accept
additions.
Relocatable by fork-lift or crane–
Disassemble and reassemble—Never
lose capital investment.
Longer lifetime of material such as steel,
aluminum, etc., for more exact fits and
tolerances.
7 year tax depreciation.
Single source.
Interchangeable panels, doors,
windows and other parts.
Fast, easy and cost effective installation.
Requires architectural time and expenditure.
Requires engineering time and expenditure.
Bid packages or a professional spec writer
is time consuming and costly–A poorly com-
municated project could be a disaster.
Building materials and quality vary day to
day. Increased costs due to numerous trips
or additional orders for building supplies.
Interrupted operations and increased con-
struction time, not to mention wet paint,
sheet rock dust, debris, and noisy tools.
Difficult to match existing construction after
time. Added levels could require more rein-
forcement in structure.
Requires demolition resulting in debris
removal and higher reconstruction costs.
Longer construction time.
Construction materials have a distinctively
shorter lifetime than materials used in
modular construction.
33 year tax depreciation.
A reliable contractor or multiple trades must
be located and coordinated for each project.
Contractors rarely use the same materials
project to project.
Environmental delays, plant down-time,
union labor etc. can add costs to the project.

ing inplant office systems, stair sys-
tems and catwalks. Most notable is the
20' tall mezzanine system.
Designed and manufactured by
Panel Built, this custom 16,311 sq. ft.
structure had to be built to 1/8'' or less
variation in the level of the deck,
which necessitated custom column
lengths to accommodate an uneven
floor. The deck is equipped with
unique fixed stanchions for parts sup-
port and surrounds the plane on three
sides for easy access.
This system features 1/8'' powder-
coated diamond plate steel flooring,
fifty-nine 20' tall columns, seventy
stanchions and two sliding deck sec-
tions. The mezzanine is surrounded
by custom handrail with tab-connect-
ed expanded metal mesh to prevent
falling parts.

22. Case Study
British Petroleum, Jonah Field, WY
Natural gas drilling operation for one of the world’s
largest energy companies.
BP wanted to expand
operations in Wyoming, the
fourth largest natural gas
producing state in the U.S.
They needed a fully-
equipped on-site facility
to act as a “home away
from home” for workers
in the field.
Challenge: To capture the rich
natural gas reserves at Jonah
Field, Wyoming, BP had to create
a living and working environ-
ment in a very remote location.
This project had to be completed
quickly, under extremely harsh
working conditions.
Solution: Find a company that could design and build a complete operations
center while coordinating and accommodating the needs of numerous departments
and levels of management. BP chose Panel Built to get the job done.
Panel Built Delivers: From concept to finish, (right down to the flagpoles) Panel
Built engineered a 17,000 sq. ft. operations center, complete with break room,
conference rooms, office space
and emergency living quarters.
Panel Built also built a 2,500 sq.
ft. warehouse with truck bays.

23. Case Study Corrugated Replacements, Inc. - GA
Manufacturer of replacement parts for corrugated machinery.
Georgia manufacturer
Corrugated Replacements
needed to create a
temperature controlled,
secure clean room for a
Coordinate Measuring
Machine in a busy factory.
Panel Built supplied the
perfect solution.
Challenge: Customer demand for
digital, recordable data on precision
parts necessitated the purchase of a
$169,000 Coordinate Measuring
Machine. This machine required a
clean, temperature controlled envi-
ronment for accurate readings.
Solution: Corrugated Replacements
wanted a modular building to house the CMM, for future flexibility in a dynamic
and changing plant. They chose Panel Built to design, manufacture and install a
two room modular system which would consolidate the quality assurance and
measurement areas.
Project Specs: This 25’x27’ in-plant office had 14 foot tall walls to accommodate
the machine and special filtration and ductwork for the clean room. Because of the
size of the machine, the build-
ing had to be constructed
around it, and a temporary
enclosure was built to protect
the delicate equipment. The
building has one standard door,
and three sets of double doors to
accommodate large parts and a
forklift to carry them. Stephen “Doc” Sellers - Plant Engineer, Corrugated Replacements
“We were very comfortable
with Panel Built.
There was nothing standard
about this building, and we
needed it quickly. They met
our schedule and made sure
we were satisfied.”

needed to add more office and
storage space.
Solution: Unwilling to sacrifice valuable floor space in their production area,
they decided to build up to take advantage of unused space.
Panel Built Delivers: They chose Panel Built to design two custom powder
coated mezzanines with wide span support to maximize the work area below. For
even more space, a three room modular office system was added to one mezzanine.
Project Specs: One 14x35 In-

27. Case Study North American Stainless
A large steel producing mill in Kentucky
North American Stainless
needed a quality contol
inspection “pulpit” where
operators could examine
new sheets of steel for
imperfections.
Panel Built and Alba
Manufacturing came up
with a uniqe solution.
Challenge: Around-the-clock
inspectors at NA Stainless needed
a safe and comfortable environ-
ment to check steel sheeting for
imperfections, with minimal dis-
ruption to the line. They chose
Alba Manufacturing to help them.
Solution: Alba came to Panel Built
with the basic requirements for the
project, and Panel Built’s Engineering Department rose to the challenge. They
designed a unique structure that had cut-outs for the steel sheeting to be fed
directly through the bottom of the building, passing by high speed cameras that
detect any imperfections. The steel then goes through the roof to an outside
roller and returns through the roof on the opposite side, where an operator can
stop the line and personally inspect the steel in question before it continues
down the line to be put on rolls and stored.
The building is fully air conditioned and maintains a constant temperature of 72
degrees even though the steel is 115 degrees when passing through. There are
custom brush wipers on all four openings to help keep the air in an almost pos-
itive pressure situation.
Project Specs: 23x25 mezzanine with custom cut-outs and a 14’ deck height.
Mezzanine supports a 23x25 stucco embossed aluminum control cabin with cus-
tom cut-outs. Building panels were powdercoated to match the mezzanine.

Nemak - Dickson, TN
Manufacturer of automotive aluminum products. This facility is
home to over 420 employees.
The resurgence of the
automotive industry
brought new life to this
Tennessee plant. Nemak
needed to accommodate
increased customer
orders by freeing up
additional space for rack
storage. They chose
KMH Systems and
Panel Built to create
the perfect solution.
Challenge: A world leader in automotive aluminum
products, Nemak needed more storage space to keep
up with customer demand. The increased business
meant space was at a premium.
This facility ran 1500 degree furnacess to melt the
aluminum used for cylinder heads. Installation
would be challenging because temperatures in the
factory frequently reached over 110 degrees.
Solution: Nemak went to KMH Systems for a solution to their problem. KMH
recommended an elevated office system for personnel, with plenty of space
underneath for the rack storage area they needed.
Panel Built Delivers: KMH chose Panel Built to design, manufacture and install
a modular office system on a 16 foot tall mezzanine. The entire system was up
within a month of the purchase order.
Project Specs: Two
12x48 modular office
systems with a 3 foot
corridor in between.
The mezzanine system
measured 27x48 with a
16 foot deck height and
an IBC stair system for
access.

Oceaneering Multiflex - U.S.
Global provider of engineered services and products,
primarily to the offshore oil and gas industry.
Oceaneering Multiflex
needed two elevated
exterior buildings that
could withstand hurricane
force winds.
Panel Built provided
a unique design that met
all of their specifications.
Challenge: The Panama-City
based facility of Oceaneering
Multiflex had a unique challenge.
They needed two operator control
cabins to house sensitive equip-
ment, mounted high in the air in
the middle of “Hurricane Alley.”
Solution: Buildings with unique slanted walls and impact-resistant tempered
glass, all within a steel reinforced framework
Panel Built Delivers: Two exterior buildings with 130 mph wind load rating.
Buildings are corrosion resistant, and designed to reduce glare from sun and water.
Project Specs: 7x15 exterior buildings (2) with slanted viewing wall on a fork-
liftable steel base with diamond
plate decking. 130 mph wind
loading. Small missile impact
resistant glazing. Impact resist-
ant fiberglass reinforced plastic
doors. Buildings meet all
Florida State Building Code
requirements and all require-
ments for the Florida DCA
Modular Building Program.

Robins Air Force Base-GA
Home of Warner Robins Air Logistics Center, the 78th
Air Base Wing, and more than 60 other Air Force units.
Robins AFB needed
additional office space,
and they needed it fast.
They chose Panel Built to
provide four three-story
in-plant offices with
custom stair systems.
The first of four, this
project was up ahead
of schedule.
Challenge: To design and con-
struct four modular office sys-
tems that would maximize work
space, while preserving valuable
floor space in the base hangers.
The structures had to be weath-
ertight, placed on uneven floors,
and capable of withstanding 50 mph wind loads. The systems also had to meet the
Air Force’s tight time constraints for construction.
Solution: Panel Built met with Air Force personnel to understand their goals and spe-
cial needs for this project. Several building options were submitted. After some mod-
ifications, a three story in-plant system was designed that met all of their requirements.
Panel Built Delivers: Panel Built provided stamped and engineered drawings and
had the first system in place with-
in six weeks, including demolition
of an existing structure and pour-
ing a concrete slab for the base.
Project Specs: 24’x38’ x 31’4”
high three story in-plant office
system with HVAC, sprinkler
system and fire alarm. Custom
