» Designed to work with specific printers.
• The main consumable resource of the inkjet printer.
• Color inkjets use the CMYK color process to produce the
RGB color spectrum.
– Print heads.
» Fixed head: attached to the carriage, it is designed to last the
life of the printer.
» Disposable head: attached to the ink cartridge, it is designed
to be replaced when the ink cartridge is replaced.
– Carriage and belt assembly.
» Carries the print head back and forth across the page.
– Rollers and feeders.
» One or more roller designed to pick up paper from the paper
tray and feed it through the printer at a constant rate.

The duplex assembly allows
for two sided printing.
An add on attachment for some inkjet printers, the
duplex assembly can be used when two sided
printing is desired. After the first side of the page is
printed, the duplex assembly will actually turn the
paper over and send it back through the printer. This
allows for the back side of the page to be printed
without user intervention.

– They are the most common printer in the
small office/home office.
» Relatively inexpensive printers that are easy to use and
maintain.
» Capable of producing good to very high quality print jobs.
• Some are capable of producing fine streams of ink that
achieve 1440 X 720 dots per inch (dpi).
– The two main types of inkjet printer.
» Piezoelectric type printer: an electrical charge is applied to a
crystal in the print head, causing it to vibrate.
• This vibration causes the ink to spray out in a fine stream.
• The piezoelectric print head constantly has ink running
through it.
» Thermal or Bubble Jet printer: heat is used at the print head
to cause the ink to bubble.
• When the bubbles burst, a fine spray of ink occurs.
• The thermal print head only receives ink as needed for
printing.

Page 9
– The printing process.
» The computer sends the print job to the printer as a
raster image.
• A raster is a line of dots that are used to make up a
portion of an image or character on a page.
• A raster image is all of the lines of dots that make up
an image or all of the characters on a page.
» The roller picks up a single page of paper and sends it
through the printer.
» As the paper passes by the carriage assembly, the ink is
applied to the page.
• The belt attached to the carriage assembly moves the
print head side to side, allowing the image or characters
to be formed by the ink line by line.
» If a duplex assembly is attached and two sided printing is
requested, it will turn the page over and send it back
through the printer for the other side to be printed.

– Safety first.
» Always read the manufacturer’s maintenance and safety guides
before performing any maintenance.
– Ink cartridge replacement.
» The most common maintenance task.
• Replace cartridges as required.
• Run the supplied calibration software after replacing
cartridges to ensure that quality print jobs are produced.
– Paper debris removal.
» Paper dust and debris can easily clog a printer. In most cases,
using compressed air can clean this out of the printer; use eye
protection when blowing dust and debris out of the printer.
– Print head cleaning.
» Most inkjet printers come with software that contains a print
head cleaning process. Run the cleaning cycle as required.
» With fixed print heads, it is possible to use isopropyl alcohol
and a cotton swab to clean off dried ink from the nozzle.

Inkjet printers.
Inkjet cartridges are designed for the specific printer and are a consumable
of the printer. The print heads may be fixed or disposable. The carriage and
belt assembly move the print heads side to side, while the roller and feeder
move the pages through the printer. An add on duplex assembly may be
used if two sided print jobs are required.

Inkjet printer parts.
Summary
Inkjet printers are the most common SOHO printer. There are two main
types of inkjet printer—the piezoelectric and the thermal printer. The
computer sends the print job to the printer as a raster image. The roller and
feeder send the paper through the printer. As the paper moves past the
print heads, the ink is applied to the page.
How inkjet printers work.
Safety is always the first consideration; always read the manufacturer’s
safety procedures. Replacing ink cartridges is the most common
maintenance task. Always run the print head calibration process after
replacing the ink. Cleaning out paper debris is another common
maintenance task. Run the print head cleaning cycle as required.
