BRIEF DESCRIPTION
• HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
• The Federal Polytechnic Ede came into existence in February, 1992, vide Decree No. 33 of 25th July, 1979 as ammended by Decree 5
of 1993. The functions of the Polytechnic as specified in the decree are as follows:
1. To provide full-time or part-time courses of instructions and training in:
 Technology, Applied Science, Commerce and Management, and
 Such other fields of applied learning relevant to the needs of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in the areas of Industrial and Agricultural Production,
Distribution and Research in the development and adoption of techniques, as the Academic Board and the Council may from time to time determine
2. To arrange conferences, seminars and study group relative to the field of learning specified in paragraph one above.
3. To perform such other functions as in the opinion of the Council which may serve to promote the objectives of the Polytechnic
 The Polytechnic took over the old Baptist Teachers College from the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) which served as the
Orientation Camp for the Corps members. This was achieved with the cooperation of Ede Local Government and Osun State
Ministry of Education.
 The responsibility for establishing and planning the take-off of the Polytechnic was vested in the Task Force committee constituted
by the Federal Ministry of Education and headed by Engr. Musa Abdullahi. In October 1992, interview for Senior Staff was
conducted at the Industrial Training Fund (ITF) office, Ibadan, by the task force.
 With the arrival of the Pioneer Rector, Cheif Jimi Bamgbose from the United States of America, the Polytechnic took off properly in
January 1993 and this subsequently paved way for the admission of 847 students (pioneer students) on 13th April, 1993.
NATURE OF JOBS DONE
• Troubleshooting
• Network solutions and IT support in a little way
• Hardware components and replacements.
• Maintenance and support.
• Crimping of Ethernet cables.
• Setting up computer systems.
• Providing IT solutions on the JAMB portal for students
HARDWARE DEPARTMENT
The user support division trains and sends out personnel to handle first layer user
issues ranging from the hardware to the software aspects. The tasks are grouped into;
HARDWARE ACTIVITIES;
SYSTEM TROUBLESHOOTING: Troubleshooting is a basic form of providing
solutions to problems, most especially concerning fault services and products. It is the
search for the solution to a current problem in a logical and systematic order,
maximizing the process efficiency in solving the problem. A few of the various tasks
carried out here are the;
Faulty Random Access Memory (RAM)
For adjustment
For replacement
• Faulty Power Park
This is a component part in a system used to convert the electric current from a supply
into direct or alternating at the specific voltage needed by the system to function
properly.
• Dead C-Mos Battery: This is a
battery that maintains the date
and time settings, hard disk and
other configuration settings in the
bios memory….
Faulty Hard Drive: This is a storage
device used to store information
permanently for future retrieval
when necessary….
Burnt Power Cables For Both
Printers And System Unit:
The issue of burnt power
cables is common in the
electrical aspect. It occurs
mostly when the current from
the power supply becomes too
excessive for the cable…..
PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE EXERCISE
The best way to solve a problem is to avoid it from taking place if possible.
That's the sole essence of preventative maintenance. A reliable
preventative maintenance program should consist of measures to secure
the system against malicious exploits, an appropriate backup plan, time to
time hardware maintenance, routine software maintenance if possible and
steps to maintain general system orderliness. Preventive maintenance has
aims to;
Limit the probability of hardware failures.
Maximize the life of a system.
Reduce the possibility of system crashes that can be caused by software
issues.
Secure the system against viruses and other malware, and prevent data
loss.
 Some basic tools for carrying out PC preventive maintenance in the
organization…
 whipes Blower Soft Brush
 Safety Goggles Handgloves Nose mask
SOFTWARE ACTIVITIES
Some of the major software applications installed which are used in the organisation are:
Installation of Microsoft office & Lync
Installation of antivirus; quickheal, smadav, Kaspersky
Installation of Adobe reader and flashplayer
Google chrome and other various web browsers
RELEVANCE OF TASKS TO MY FIELD OF STUDY
 Over the course of my training, I was able to gain practical experience to
complement the theoretical knowledge which I already acquired. Working with
servers and databases showed my how data is actually stored and distributed to
its destinations. I also gained interpersonal skills which has aided my business
management thinking which is an important aspect of my course. I also studied
their knowledge management strategy which is close to codification.
NEW SKILLS GAINED
I improved immensely on my problem solving skills.
I gathered adequate knowledge on hardware
telecommunications.
I adopted a lifestyle of preventive maintenance.
I learned how to troubleshoot hardware issues efficiently.
I learned how to trouble shoot software issues efficiently.
I understood some basics of working with servers.
I learned how to work as a team alongside my colleagues.
I improved my inter personal relationship working with
colleagues and superiors.
I learned how to troubleshoot efficiently.
OBSERVATIONS
 The IT Dept. I trained at was well equipped with human resource in
the form of fellow SIWES trainees to ensure there was no shortage in
workforce at any given time or task.
 Willingness of staff to educate trainees.
 Presence of adequate task equipment.
 Initial orientation period for new intakes.
 A negative observation; few impoliteness from some staff.
CONTRIBUTIONS/RECOMMENDATION.
• I recommend more strict supervision of the training scheme of future intakes in the
organization.
• I make a suggestion that the ITF body should partner with various organizations
open to accepting SIWES trainees.
• I recommend SIWES trainees should be paid financially. No matter how little.
Transportaion fee per day (i.e if you calculate amount spent for transportation alone
for six months) is not a joke and it was not easy without mincing words.
CONCLUSION
 It is to be said that my SIWES program was excellent. I managed to achieve the
objectives and aims of the SIWES program set by ITF. In this program I was able
to gain hands on practical experience to complement the major theoretical aspect
being studied at the university. I also got a sense of how to cope and interact with
fellow workers in a corporate environment. I have also been able to improve my
team work which I have not been used to before and discovered that it’s amazing.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME
