The Democracy Index is a report published by the Economist Intelligence Unit that measures the state of democracy in 167 countries based on 60 indicators across five categories - electoral process and pluralism, civil liberties, functioning of government, political participation, and political culture. According to Laza Kekic, Director of Country Forecasting Services at the EIU, the 2020 Democracy Index report found that democracy is in a state of decline globally with the average global score falling from 5.48 in 2015 to 5.37 in 2020. The report also assessed that several countries in Latin America have experienced declines in their democracy scores in recent years, with Mexico receiving a classification of a "flawed democracy" and scoring 6.12 out of 10 in 2020
