Lesson 1.1. What is Open Education?
Definition of Open Education
Open Education encompasses resources, tools and practices that employ a
framework of open sharing to improve educational access and effectiveness.
By combining the traditions of knowledge sharing and creation with 21st century
technology, Open Education wants to create a vast pool of openly shared
educational resources, while harnessing today’s collaborative spirit to develop
educational approaches that are more responsive to learner’s needs.
Open Education seeks to scale up educational opportunities by taking advantage
of the power of the internet, allowing rapid and essentially free dissemination,
and enabling people around the world to access knowledge, connect and
collaborate. Open allows not just access, but the freedom to modify and use
materials, information and networks so education can be personalized to
individual users or woven together in new ways for diverse audiences, large and
small.
www.openMedproject.eu
OER are “[t]eaching, learning and research materials in any medium, digital or otherwise, that reside in the
public domain or have been released under an open license that permits no-cost access, use, adaptation and
redistribution by others with no or limited restrictions.” (UNESCO, 2012)
www.openMedproject.eu
Lesson 1.1. What is an Open Educator?
An Open Educator chooses to use open approaches, when possible and
appropriate, with the aim to remove all unnecessary barriers to learning. S/he
works through an open online identity and relies on online social networking to
enrich and implement his/her work, understanding that collaboration bears a
responsibility towards the work of others.
He/she:
• 1. Implements Open Learning Design
• 2. Embraces Open Educational Content
• 3. Adopts Open Pedagogies
• 4. Implements Open Assessment practices
www.openMedproject.eu
Activity 1.1. Reflect on your openness
www.openMedproject.eu
Lesson 1.2 The benefits and impact of OE
How using OER and open approaches can change:
• the way YOU work
• the way YOUR UNIVERSITY performs
• the way YOUR STUDENTS learn
• the way OTHER LEARNERS participate

Activity 1.2. Reflect on benefitst of OE
• Does your academic institution practice any form of Open Education?
• If yes, is it for full programs, courses, or part of a course? how is that
benefiting your students? and how is benefiting your institution?
• In not, where do you see a potential for Open Education to help your
students and institution? and how each stakeholder will benefit from
such potential?

You can select a learning resource that you are actually using (a book, a set of
PPTs, or the content covering a whole course) and commit to make it openY
You can commit to adopt an open teaching or open assessment strategy within
your course.
This should include: the objectives, the activities that you will run during the
project work, the main results of your project work, the benefits that your
project work will bring to you, to your students and to your institution.
www.openMedproject.eu

to go
• You should have an idea on how this could happen
in your context
