This document introduces the COACH model created in 2013 by Tom Curtis to aid in improvement. The COACH model consists of 5 steps: clarify to provide insight on intent and purpose, observe to understand in whole and gain proper perspective, adjust through discussion and teaching, check the adjustment through practice, and hansei to review and extract learnings to improve future interactions. 3. clarify
Provide insight into what is being
done. If the student is clear on
intent and purpose, they can focus
on practice and improvement.

4. observe
Watch to understand and see
in whole. If we see in whole,
we can work on specifics with
proper perspective and focus.

5. adjust
Make an adjustment through
discussion, showing, and teaching.
Work collaboratively with the
student to strengthen the change.

6. check
Check the adjustment through practice.
Reteach and work through together.
Design a plan for further practice. If
needed recycle to adjust step.

7. hansei
Review the interaction and extract
learnings. Apply learnings to
improve for future cycles or to
correct the reviewed interaction.
