Manufacturing theory.
This is a “Marketing Free” event!
This webinar is 20 minute or less discussion and presentation
about purchased assemblies. What are they and techniques
for use in Bills of Materials.
We will do a live demo….. With Q&A

3. Definitions: (typical)
A Bill of Materials is a list of the raw materials, sub-assemblies, intermediate assemblies,
sub-components, parts, and the quantities of each needed to manufacture an end product.
A Catalog is a list of parts used by your company to make your products. Often called an INventory or an
Item Master, its a list of parts and sub-assemblies needed to put your final product together.
A Part Number is an unambiguous identifier of a particular part design. Its purpose is to simplify reference
to that part.
An Assembly refers to a collection of parts or sub-assemblies generally created in CAD.
A Purchased Assembly is an assembly which is purchased in its complete and fully assembled state.
Usually under a single part number. Pumps, Motor, Actuators, PCB boards, etc

2) Manually created in BOM tool

What are some of the reasons you may want to
use a purchased assembly?
1. You want to model the assembly components to calculate weight, size, function, etc, but are
buying the item assembled.
2. For the first 10 serial numbers of your product you manufactured the door assembly in-house
so you needed all the bits to appear in the BOM and PO - so you could buy and build it. Now
going into HVM you will be buying the assembly from a supplier/contractor complete as a
single part number.
3. You have a manufacturing partner who designed the assembly and you simply want to include
it in your CAD and BOM. The partner sends you the CAD files.
4. I am sure there are others…...

Use case: You model the assembly components to calculate weight, size, function, etc, but
are buying some items assembled. Here a bearing is modeled for true size and shape, but
desire to purchase as a line item.

Problem - Creating a BOM will include all the sub-components of the bearing (races,
rollers, seals, etc). We want the yellow line below, we will get all the sub-components too.

Technique - Tell the BOM tool to treat the Bearing from CAD as a single item with no
sub-components. Use the CAD tool setting to identify the bearing as having no
sub-components?

Result - Now your BOM tool will ignore the components below the bearing. And you will
see a single line item in the BOM for the Assembly.

Questions:
1. Can I keep the item as an assembly but share with my supplier only that assy?
a. Yes, just open the sub-assy and share that with your supplier
