Hinweis der Redaktion
I referred to Andre Duhaime as the grandfather of haiku. He wasn’t offended. He said he’d been called pope of haiku in Canada.
Like many poets, he learnt haiku by reading novels by Jack Kerouac and the Beat Generation and the various haiku anthologies.
Andre’s first various writing topics related to the city, the family, domestic life.
He will write a lot of his wife and his children.
Andre Duhaime wrote many book of haiku. Nobody else wrote haiku in French in those days, so Andre join the group Haiku Canada, had to learn English to know what was happening. Lucky for him he lived in Aylmer, at the border of Quebec and Ontario, so he was able to attend the Haiku Canada Week-end at Betty Drevniok’s cabin and progress in writing haiku. He wrote Parallell Journey with LeRoy Gorman in 1989. He even president of Haiku Canada.
1997 : created the website Haïkus sans frontières’, an internatioal anthology, in French, on the web, that contributed to introduce French haiku poets to the world and to each other.
There`s a section on Canada, France, etc. with the names of all haiku poets who write in French, their photo, bio and poems, contact info
1985 : he directed with Dorothy Howard Haïku : anthologie canadienne /Canadian anthology, the first canadian anthology including french speaking poets.
In the introduction, there’s a history of north american haiku in English written by Elizabeth Searle Lamb et a history of French haiku (from France and Quebec) wirtten by Bernadette Guilmette.
It contains haiku by 50 English speaking posts and about 10 french speaking poets.

Andre Duhaime did a lot for haiku in French, so it`s not wonder that this year, there was a biography published about him, written by Micheline Beaudry. It was quite amazing, if you think about it, for a haiku poet to get his own biography. It could be a premiere, in French haiku world, anyway.
On top of all that, Andre Duhaime did something really great. He opened haiku to a brand new market: children. His first two albums were putblished at Editions Asticou in 1990, then the whole series was reprinted in 2003 at Editions Des Plaines.
Read and examples
He also introduced haiku to teens with three anthologies: Pixels in 2008: a collection of haiku about technology, Adrenalin in 2009 is a collection fo haiku about sports and in 2011, J’amour is a collection of tanka about love.
As more publishing house start publishing haiku, they will also venture in the kids market. In 2010, Editions l’iroli in France published Haiku mon nounours, by Gilles Brulet. A series of haiku about a teddy bear with beautiful illustrations by Chiaki Miyamoto.
