• Tom: Hi. I don't think we've met. My name's Tom.

• Jenny: Hi, Tom. Nice to meet you. My name is Juanita, but everybody calls me Jenny.

• Tom: Nice to meet you, Jenny. So, where are you from?

• Jenny: Well, originally I'm from Argentina, but we moved to the United States when I was about five years
old. My parents now live in Chile. That's where they first met. How about you, Tom?

• Tom: I was born in Fresno, California, and we lived there until I was seven. Then, since my father worked
for the military, we moved all over the place.

• Jenny: Oh yeah? Where are some of the places you've lived?

• Tom: Mostly, we were overseas. We spent a total of ten years in Korea, Germany, and Okinawa, Japan.
We were transferred back to the States three years ago, but I think my parents would have liked to live
overseas for at least 20 more years.

• Jenny: Wow. It sounds like you've had an interesting life. So, what do you do now?

• Tom: I'm a student at Purdue University.

• Talking to Strangers
• There are many opportunities to talk with strangers. If you are waiting for
a bus, or if you are waiting in line, strangers start talking to each other.
Another opportunity is if you are on a ferry or in the park sitting on a
bench. Basically, opportunities can come everywhere. You should
practice this section if you want to talk with different people. Talking to
strangers require a lot of small talk. You can study more about small talk
in the English Lesson section. For now, we will cover things like talking
about where you came from.If you look like a tourist, some people will
ask where you are from. This is just a way to get to know strangers. It's
quite common to talk with strangers here. Here are some questions you
might hear."Are you visiting from somewhere?”"Yes. I'm visiting from
Korea.”"Are you on vacation here?”"Yes. I'm taking a vacation from
Korea."It's very common for strangers to talk to each other if you are at a
tourist location. For example, if you are at Disney Land and you are
sitting down, someone next to you might ask some questions assuming
you are visiting from somewhere."How are you enjoying your
vacation?”"I'm having a great time. How about you?”"It's pretty fun here.
Are you having a good time?”"This is a great place. I'm having a lot of
fun. Are you having fun?”"Are you here with your family?”"I'm here with
my wife and 2 kids. They are so excited to be here.”"My kids love this
place. This is our third time here. Have you been here before?”
• "This is my first time here.I always wanted to come and I'm having a
    great time."

Giving Direction
• Walk up park street to 2nd avenue. Turn
• Walk along…bus…
• Lesson Plan: Giving Directions
• Not everyone knows where they are going and may need help with directions from time to time.
Directions may be needed to get to a near by town, or directions to the newest mall in town or
directions to the nearest rest room in a large building. Where ever you are going the expression
below can be used when asking for directions. English Expressions Expression Response Could
you tell me how to get to ( …the library)? Go to the next light and turn right. Go two blocks,
it’s on the left. How do I find ( … city hall)? Just go straight, it’s on this street, on the
right, about a mile and a half.Which way do I go to get to ( … the post office)? Drive to Jackson
Street and turn right. The post office is in the middle of the block, across from the park.Pardon
me, I'm lost, how do I get to the ( … museum)? Go to the second light and turn left. Then go the
third stop sign. The museum is on that corner.Could you direct me to ( … I-10)? Take Pinal
Avenue north about 8 miles You’ll run into it.Which is the best route to ( …the stadium)? Take
Washington Street north to the Papago freeway and Head west. You can’t miss it. Suggestions for
giving directions Giving street directions is really very easy when you remember to follow these
points. When giving directions you are actually giving two sets of instructions. In the
first set- "Go To" - you are telling the listener what street to go to or how far to go. In the
second set- "Then", you are telling the listener what to do when they get
there. (turn right/left, go straight, on the left, etc.) Giving even very
complicated directions is just a repetition of these two basic steps. Another good idea is to
use easily identifiable landmarks; instead of the amount of time to get someplace (time is
relative, after all). Easily identifiable landmarks are street lights, stop signs, parks, tall
building standing alone, etc. Prepositions of location most commonly used when giving
directions: go straight go to turn right turn
left cross on your right on your left beside next
to behind across from in front of caddy corner

What is the TOPIC? News…
• A fifteen-year-old boy was injured in a car accident when the minivan he was traveling in
was hit by a pickup truck at an intersection. The boy was taken to a nearby hospital. The
paramedics said that it appeared that the boy had nothing more serious than a broken left
leg, but that internal injuries were always a possibility. The boy was conscious and alert.
His mother, who was driving, was uninjured. She said that the truck appeared out of
nowhere, and she thought she was going to die. She turned the steering wheel sharply to
the left, and the truck hit her minivan on the passenger side.

• The driver of the truck was a 50-year-old man who was unemployed and apparently had
been drinking—police found 18 empty beer cans inside the truck. The man denied drinking,
but he failed the police test for sobriety. When asked to touch his nose with his arms
outstretched and eyes closed, he was unable to touch any part of his head.

• The handcuffed man asked the police if they knew where “Mabel” was as he was put into
the back seat of the police vehicle. The police asked him if Mabel was his wife. He said,
“She’s my dog, my dog! Where’s my baby?” A dog with a collar, but no identification, was
found minutes later, half a block away. The man was taken to the city jail and booked on
suspicion of driving while intoxicated and on causing an accident.

Another opportunity is if you are on a ferry or in the park sitting on a bench. Basically, opportunities can come everywhere. You should practice this section if you want to talk with different people. Talking to strangers require a lot of small talk. You can study more about small talk in the English Lesson section. For now, we will cover things like talking about where you came from.If you look like a tourist, some people will ask where you are from. This is just a way to get to know strangers. It's quite common to talk with strangers here. Here are some questions you might hear."Are you visiting from somewhere?”"Yes. I'm visiting from Korea.”"Are you on vacation here?”"Yes. I'm taking a vacation from Korea."It's very common for strangers to talk to each other if you are at a tourist location. • 23. Giving Direction • Walk up park street to 2nd avenue. Turn • Walk along…bus…
  • 24. Lesson Plan: Giving Directions • Not everyone knows where they are going and may need help with directions from time to time. Directions may be needed to get to a near by town, or directions to the newest mall in town or directions to the nearest rest room in a large building. Where ever you are going the expression below can be used when asking for directions. English Expressions Expression Response Could you tell me how to get to ( …the library)? Go to the next light and turn right. Go two blocks, it’s on the left. How do I find ( … city hall)? Just go straight, it’s on this street, on the right, about a mile and a half.Which way do I go to get to ( … the post office)? Drive to Jackson Street and turn right. The post office is in the middle of the block, across from the park.Pardon me, I'm lost, how do I get to the ( … museum)? Go to the second light and turn left. Then go the third stop sign. The museum is on that corner.Could you direct me to ( … I-10)? Take Pinal Avenue north about 8 miles You’ll run into it.Which is the best route to ( …the stadium)? Take Washington Street north to the Papago freeway and Head west. You can’t miss it. Suggestions for giving directions Giving street directions is really very easy when you remember to follow these points. When giving directions you are actually giving two sets of instructions. In the first set- "Go To" - you are telling the listener what street to go to or how far to go. In the second set- "Then", you are telling the listener what to do when they get there. (turn right/left, go straight, on the left, etc.) Giving even very complicated directions is just a repetition of these two basic steps. Another good idea is to use easily identifiable landmarks; instead of the amount of time to get someplace (time is relative, after all). Easily identifiable landmarks are street lights, stop signs, parks, tall building standing alone, etc. Prepositions of location most commonly used when giving directions: go straight go to turn right turn left cross on your right on your left beside next to behind across from in front of caddy corner
