USES Potential applications: Providing portable mobile broadband connectivity across cities and countries through a variety of devices. Providing a wireless alternative to cable and DSL for "last mile" broadband access. Providing data, telecommunications (VoIP) and IPTV services (triple play). Providing a source of Internet connectivity as part of a business continuity plan. Providing a network to facilitate machine to machine communications, such as for Smart Metering. 10/16/2010 Peer Consulting Group 12
Long Term Evolution (LTE) Much of the standard addresses upgrading 3G UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecom System) to 4G mobile communications technology, which is essentially a mobile broadband system with enhanced multimedia services built on top. Peak download rates of 326.4 Mbit/s for 4x4 antennas, and 172.8 Mbit/s for 2x2 antennas. Peak upload rates of 86.4 Mbit/s for every 20 MHz of spectrum using a single antenna. Sub-5 ms latency for small IP packets Good support for mobility. High performance mobile data is possible at speeds of up to 350 km/h, or even up to 500 km/h, depending on the frequency band used. Support for MBSFN (Multicast Broadcast Single Frequency Network). This feature can deliver services such as Mobile TV using the LTE infrastructure, and is a competitor for TV broadcast. Adapted from Wikipedia 10/16/2010 13 Peer Consulting Group
Analysis of LTE 3. 3GPP Evolution: GSM, HSPA...now LTE Today, there is an important infrastructure around the entire world that allows users to enjoy mobile coverage. This coverage is possible thanks to the deployment of different generations of mobile technologies: 1G, 2G and 3G. This infrastructure follows the 3GPP standards, in terms of nodes and protocols. The money invested in all of these nodes is huge, and operators must maximize the use of these facilities. Now, 3GPP has researched the next step of the net evolution: LTE. LTE seems to be the natural path from GSM and HSPA. The compatibility between LTE and the other 3GPP's predecessors will result in relatively easy upgrade possibilities. . 10/16/2010 14 Peer Consulting Group Credit - M. E. Alebicto LinkedIn Blog
3GPP The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) is a collaboration between groups of telecommunications associations, to make a globally applicable third-generation (3G) mobile phone system specification within the scope of the International Mobile Telecommunications-2000 project of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). 3GPP specifications are based on evolved Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) specifications. 3GPP standardization encompasses Radio, Core Network and Service architecture. The groups are the European Telecommunications Standards Institute, Association of Radio Industries and Businesses/Telecommunication Technology Committee (ARIB/TTC) (Japan), China Communications Standards Association[2], Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (North America) and Telecommunications Technology Association (South Korea). The project was established in December 1998. 10/16/2010 15 Peer Consulting Group
Analysis of LTE & WiMax 1. Time advantage WiMax is already in the market while Long Term Evolution is still, well, evolving. WiMax has a bit of a time advantage over LTE: WiMax is present nowadays in numerous countries around the world. There are already a lot of deployments, and WiMax is growing step by step in different markets, not only in urban zones, also in rural and/or emerging markets. Forecasts say that LTE will roll out in the 2011 – 2015 timeframe. Availability of WiMax, HSPA and LTE 10/16/2010 16 Peer Consulting Group Credit - M. E. Alebicto LinkedIn Blog

IPv6 10/16/2010 Peer Consulting Group 18 There are about 203 million IPv4 addresses left, enough to last less than nine months.
IPv6 We’ll run out of fixed IP Addresses next summer IPv6 is the follow-on to IPv4 IPv6 will fix the problem* IPv6 is not compatible with IPv4 ISPs will continue to provide the translation The US military and the Chinese government are converting aggressively *see Wikipedia …3.4×1028 10/16/2010 19 Peer Consulting Group
IPv6 The increased length of network addresses emphasizes an important change when moving from IPv4 to IPv6. IPv6 addresses are 128 bits long, whereas IPv4 addresses are 32 bits; where the IPv4 address space contains roughly 4.3×109 (4.3 billion) addresses, IPv6 has enough room for 3.4×1038 (340 trilliontrilliontrillion) unique addresses. IPv6 addresses are normally written with hexadecimal digits and colon separators like 2001:db8:85a3::8a2e:370:7334, as opposed to the dot-decimal notation of the 32 bit IPv4 addresses. 10/16/2010 Peer Consulting Group 20
IPv6 Enables the “Internet of Things”. IT managers should ensure that HW/SW purchases are IPv6 compatible. No justification to make major changes inside the firewall. May lose some Customer/trading partner statistics. May receive some charges from ISP to provide customer activity that includes IPv6. 10/16/2010 Peer Consulting Group 21

Analysis of LTE & WiMax 2. Latency Credit - M. E. Alebicto LinkedIn Blog Latency: LTE 10ms WiMax 50ms There is a significant difference in the latency of WiMax and LTE, and some "real time" multimedia services will get benefit of this. Latency is a key point in some online services, i.e. 3d HDTV, medical robotics. 10/16/2010 23 Peer Consulting Group

  • 15. 3GPP The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) is a collaboration between groups of telecommunications associations, to make a globally applicable third-generation (3G) mobile phone system specification within the scope of the International Mobile Telecommunications-2000 project of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
