INTERNET

What is the INTERNET ?
The Internet is a global system of interconnected
computer network.

It is a network of networks that consists of millions of
private and public, academic, business, and government
networks of local to global scope that are linked by copper
wires, fiber-optic cables, wireless connections, and other
technologies.
What is the INTERNET ?

Technically, the "internet" is all the computers in the world that are
connected, including the technologies (routers, servers, etc (which are also
computers actually) as well as the wires and antennas that keep all the
computers talking to each other.

So the "internet" is not just your web email. It is everything that goes over
those wires from one computer to another: the email itself, web sites,
messenger (such as Yahoo Messenger or MSN Messenger), phone calls
on Skype, messages from an ATM to a bank, ...

The words "Internet" and "Web" are often used interchangeably. Strictly
speaking, the "Internet" would be everything that goes between computers,
and the "Web" would be ... websites.
Importance of the internet to you.

Because of all these things, the "internet" is a
gigantic library, as well as a world-wide message
board, telephone network, and publishing medium. It
is open 24 hours a day, and you can find anything
you want there, and say anything you want.
Importance of the internet to our organization

•"Communication"
with other organizations, with your members, with your staff, with your supporters and
donors.
some great ways: letters, phone calls, faxes, meetings

additional ways: email, messenger, web pages, mail lists, web site message boards

•"Publishing" your message to the world.

some great ways: books, journals, brochures, press releases, workshops,
    conferences, lectures.

additional ways: website with conference proceedings, PDF files of your
    publications, blogs, newsfeeds
•Customer support"

the people you are helping through your organization.
Nothing is better than people with people: interviews, workshops, conferences,
     classes.

additional ways can help them when you aren't there: email, messenger, web
pages, mail lists, web site message boards. With video-conferencing, podcasting
and other great web tools, you can even have workshops and classes online.

•"Research"
on the news, issues, papers and literature relevant to your cause.
some great ways: books, magazines, journals, papers
•Increase credibility
•increase exposure
•Greater quantity and quality of inquiries.
•Increase donations and sales
•Reduce cost per contact
•Increased access to your information
•Save on printing costs
• Reduce phone usage and staff load.
•educe postage, express mail and courier service, and
phone costs.
•increase your "green rating".
What are the Risks?
Here are some of the major risks you and your family
face when using the Internet:

   Viewing objectionable material
   Meeting someone online
   Losing privacy
   Losing time
   Finding false information
History of Internet

               ARPANET
The ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects
Agency Network) created by ARPA of the United
States Department of Defense during the Cold
War, was the world's first operational packet
switching network, and the predecessor of the
global Internet.

How computers are connected to the internet
What Are The Different Methods Of Connecting To
            The Internet?

There are numerous ways to connect to the Internet. Here
are the more obvious ones:

Direct connection, by using a computer that is permanently plugged into the
Internet.

By phone line. This may be by dial-up or ADSL, but still uses a phone line.

By cable. This facility is provided by a cable-TV supplier.

In a wireless hotspot.

By satellite. It is possible to have two-way satellite Internet communications
nowadays, but it is quite expensive.
How to get connected to the Internet ?

Tips for Parents

Keep the computer in a shared room so you can see what
the child is doing online.

Ensure children are not using mobiles devices in their
rooms when they should be sleeping.

Ensure that your child knows the dangers of giving out
personal information over the web and never does this.

Talk to your kids, make sure they know the risks, get
involved with your child's life online, learn with your child.
Tips for Parents

Set rules about time online (recommended max 2 hours*
screen time per day, including TV)

Let your children know that not everything they read online is
true. That goes for people in chat rooms and virtual worlds too,
as people are not always who they say they are.

Don't allow them to share personal pictures of themselves or
others with strangers. Make sure that older children think
about the consequences of their online actions and their online
reputation.
