Statement Of Purpose: UCLA Unicamp
I believe that everyone the potential to make a difference in this world; it is just so that many
don't have a support system to push them towards achieving a goal. Kids from the beginning are
perpetually convinced that they are worthless and that they could never be successful.
Fortunately, I am blessed with a community who gave me the confidence to discover that I can
achieve whatever I wish for in life; that group of people is UCLA Unicamp. UCLA Unicamp is an
organization that strives on changing kids lives' from all over Los Angeles. UCLA students
volunteer as counselors and take the campers up the mountain to Camp River Glen for one week.
Unicamp has many programs directed towards different life skills and the one I enrolled in was

The counselors conducted captivating workshops that taught us not to trust stereotypes and
statistics because they can't define who a person is. Developing this type of mindset allowed me
to open up to new people easily and that lead to new friendships. I learned that in every person
was someone new and beautiful who could become my friend. I became more confident to escape
my ethnic bubble and to make new friends of different races; we all truly have such authentic
personalities and by coming together we build distinctive relationships that truly exhibit diversity.
Out of everything I learned at camp the lesson I am most grateful for is learning how to be a leader
and how initiating leadership can influence change all around

UCLA Law: Case Study
I wanted to write you directly, first to thank you for your generous gift to UCLA Law, and second to
offer an explanation and apology for the miscommunication acknowledging your generosity. Dean
Mnookin shared your correspondence with me and immediately I contacted my colleague, Mike
Gyulai, Executive Director of Annual Giving at the UCLA Foundation to address your valid
concerns. I am pleased to share with you that your gifts have been appropriately designated to the
UCLA Law Dean's Discretionary Fund. The acknowledgment sent from the UCLA Foundation used
a shortened name, listing the account as Dean's Discretionary Fund. Mike was very receptive to
concerns that this shortened listing can easily lead to confusion for recipients. Adjustments will be
made and Mike assured me that moving forward the UCLA Foundation will use the full account
name for gift acknowledgments....show more content...

The mission of the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center is to provide excellent patient care in
support of the educational and scientific programs of the schools of the UCLA Center for the
Health Sciences. Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center was built in response to the damage
incurred by the old hospital structure during the 1994 Northridge earthquake. The new hospital,
which replaces the 1955 facility, is one of the first hospitals in the state to meet the latest California
seismic safety standards. This state–of–the–art building will serve as a pillar of strength to the local
community, even during those times when acts of...show more content...
Every floor harbors a number of ICU rooms. These are laid out so that the bed is in the center of
the room allowing staff to treat a patient from all sides. In the event that a patient needs to be moved
from an ICU room to surgery, the ceiling boom in an ICU room has an equipment arm and portable
trolley with battery that detaches and can go with the patient, saving critical
preparation–for–transport time. All of these features are built into each room to allow the rooms to
function as needs develop. Unlike most hospitals, every floor here is dedicated to a particular
specialty and all of the support equipment and supplies for those patients is located on the very
same floor. Crisscrossing corridors in the nurse's area make access to the supplies equal–distance
from any of the patient rooms. Finally, every floor has its own satellite pharmacy, dialysis storage,
respiratory therapy workrooms, and resident doctor sleep rooms, making every floor nearly
self–sufficient. The latest wireless technology has been installed so that the hospital is paperless,
that is, it uses advanced communication technologies that provide both medical professionals and
patient's better access to relevant medical records and research data. Clinical staff has access to
electronic patient charts at every bedside. Patients and visitors have wireless Internet access
throughout the building. And, wireless digital technology makes it possible to boast a film–less

English as a Universal Language Essay
English language as a universal language and it is very important. Every people are urge to learn
English language. Especially for university students who are going to enter society after graduation,
English is perceived to be crucial for communication at work with regards to employment. But in
Malaysia, the proficiency of English language among youth is declining. Start in the 70s, many
concerned stakeholders from employers, linguists and educationists to parents have voiced their
concern. (Azizan Haraiti, &Lee, Y.M., 2011) Low levels in English proficiently means youth are
missing out on current and important issues. Mahathir Mohamad (2011) hopes young Malaysians to

Furthermore, English can increase one's chances of being accepted in the exchange program by
improving English. One of the requirements for the program is that people applying should have
decent skills in the English language. Therefore, youth should take actions to improve English
language before regret. Goals, motivation and attitude of youth are the effective ways to improve
one's English language. Youth must set up a goal and found out the motivations before starting
improving English. Goals can help youth to sort out what is important and what isn't. With goals,
youth will only focus on the things that they want to achieve and spend precious time on them. For
example, learn to write a good essay during three month set as one's goal, he or she will try their
personal best and personal ways to enhance English writing skills during that given period.
Motivation also plays a critical role in improving English language. McDonough S. (1983: 142)
stated that "motivation of the student is one of the most important factors influencing their success
or failure in learning the language." When studying English, youth might face a lot of different
problems like environment problem, financial problem and so on. Motivation can help one to keep
going despite the problems. If one keeps the motivation high and their eyes on the goal, no problem
will seem insuperable. Besides that, attitude of youth towards improving English language also
important. Youth must keep a

Personal Statement: How To Succeed At UCLA
At 17 years old I entered UCLA as a biology major. With my prior successful academic
performance and younger age, I was overconfident and immature going into college. During my
first 4 quarters my social pursuits smothered my academic ones; I lived a very unbalanced life,
and my grades suffered. My second winter break was the turning point, and I realized that
committing only 50% effort to academics would not be enough. I acknowledged my mistakes and
became entirely determined to change my path from that point forward. I created a list titled "How
to Succeed at UCLA," which outlined the steps needed to regain balance and ensure academic
success. I changed every aspect of my life from what I ate, to who I spent time with, to what time I

Personal Narrative: My UCLA Field Trip
UCLA field trip
For my first science event I chose the UCLA field trip I went on with my biology. On Saturday
April 16 , my biology classmates and I went to UCLA citylab. CityLab at UCLA is a science
educational program run by UCLA undergraduate and graduate students that shows high school
students to develop the world of biotechnology though "hands on" laboratory experience. I choose
this event because it was so educating and fun. These city labs help me develop my skills in biology.
While working in labs I also have fun , in citylab they make these plays that involve a problem that
we need to solve. In this UCLA citylab , the problem was finding rapanzels real mother. In order to
find her mother we needed to distract DNA from Mother Gothel and the Queen. In the end we
found rapanzels real mother to be the Queen. I choose this event because I learned more about
biology and I had a blast while doing the labs. When I'm older I hope to work in science ,
specifically biology that's why these labs are so important to me because I'm expanding my
knowledge. When I first arrived I expected a complicated lab and many many students...show more

the movie legally blonde before but I've never seen it as a musical theater play. I was so excited
to watch this play because I love plays with drama and romantic comedy. I did not know what to
expect because I've never seen a play before , especially about my favorite movie. I chose this
event because I thought it could teach me about acting and confidence. Two things I lack. I am
terrified of going in front of a class, so I can not imagine going in front of a auditorium full of
people. I've always loved musicals and plays and acting in general. Therefore I thought going to
this play would teach me a little bit about acting and how to not be so scared in front of

I would like to share a brief story on how my feelings for UCLA has changed since the application
process. My initial thought of the institution was nothing but respect for the academic opportunities
it offers. The one thing I underlooked was the community as well as the atmosphere it had.
During the middle of spring break, my sisters took me on a trip as a way of congratulating me for my
college acceptances. We drove across California visiting campuses starting from Davis, Irvine, and
then San Diego. I was told we were heading to LA afterwards which I was a bit hesitant on. I didn't
know much about the place as I've been stuck in two cities my entire life: Yangon and San
Francisco. On top of that, I knew I didn't get into UCLA which naturally pushed me away from the
city. The truth was that...show more content...
We were on our way to a restaurant at the time and unknowingly entered the outer edge of UCLA's
campus. The first thought that came into my mind was the atmosphere. The schools that I visited
earlier are amazing in their own rights but UCLA's atmosphere had the biggest impact on me. It was
one where there was a healthy balance of calmness while having the persistence to get work done. I
believe that the surrounding environment heavily impacts the performance of a student. It does not
matter how good a school may be when there are nothing around to alleviate your stress. In this
case for UCLA, there are amazing sights all around to look forward to after a well fought exam.
Later in the trip, I began to appreciate the city of Los Angeles for its diversity after visiting
Koreatown, Thai–town, and Little Tokyo. It is an aspect that makes me feel at home and sets up the
stage for me to perform. There were attraction sites such as the Santa Monica Mall and The Grove
that really amazed me. I was admittedly jealous that the students can enjoy this nightlife at their

UCLA Housing Case Study
The inceptive goal of the project was to create a set of concrete guidelines for sustainable
procurement within UCLA Housing, with an emphasis on commonly used office supplies. The
current UCOP and H&HS guidelines on purchasing are vague and makes it difficult for purchasers to
discern between what is environmentally preferred or what is not. Emma suggested for the team to
create a system of comprehensive purchasing standards that would streamline sustainable
procurement and maximize UCLA Housing's use of eco–friendly goods. The team intended to create
the guidelines based on several third party certifications like the EPA's Comprehensive Procurement
Guidelines and University of California Sustainable Practices Policy. However, we soon discovered
that the EPA's Comprehensive Procurement Guidelines was the only set of guidelines that
incorporated office supplies. Furthermore, the...show more content...

My Experience At The Library
Bruno Ouattara November 2013 880 390 199 Sociology 100 In November 19th, 2013, it was
raining when I came to school. Just after my English class, I was heading to the library to find a
quiet place where I could study. I saw a group of Asian's students coming out from the library, and
one of them, a girl, was holding an umbrella. So I walked straight to her and I soon as I got very
close to her, without introducing myself, I grabbed her umbrella. Surprised she didn't know what to
expect. She just dropped the umbrella in my hands, and I walked inside the library with the
umbrella on top of my head. She stood under the rain, very surprised and was looking back...show

There were also some students standing just against the wall and smoking cigarettes. Just in the
entrance of building 25, I saw a security guy passing by, and talking to students from table to table.
I think he was trying to tell them to put their phones away and do not leave them at the table
because they can be stolen. While I was getting closer and closer the girl and her friends were
trying to get together in one side and let me pass, and they were kind of slowing down because I
was running into them. But I think I didn't give too much choice to her; she released the umbrella
because she was surprised or afraid; so she didn't resist. But after she released it, she felt weird to
let me take the umbrella; I can tell in her surprising's face. Her friends walked back and all of the
sudden they started to talk in Chinese or Japanese (I don't actually know the difference) like 30
seconds after I took the umbrella and started to walk back in the library after me. The smokers
were watching the scene and one of them was laughing. They started to kind of want to follow
me inside and I didn't just walked away, instead I stopped just inside to look one more time and
see if someone was going to talk. The lady at the front desk was looking quiet and some others
students inside also. When they come in front of me, I realized they needed an answer. And that
influenced me to give up. So I

Liberal Arts Education Essay
A liberal arts education is one that, by definition, focuses not on one specific subject, but rather
prepares its student by giving them knowledge in many areas and developing the student's critical
thinking that will allow them to adapt to an ever–changing world. Naturally, this means students at a
university that employs a liberal arts education take classes outside their major. Students of the
humanities or social sciences must enroll in courses of mathematics and natural sciences, and while
many find no joy in such requirements, they better the individual and are helpful in everyday life,
as well as in larger issues. As Crane and Chiles so eloquently write, specifically of science, "Science
matters at a liberal–arts university because the problems facing our global community will not be
solved by scientists alone." Mathematics as a subject acts in a similar way, giving skills to students,
non–mathematics majors included, to help in their everyday lives or potentially to help the world.

To do that, Chopp argues that "What you have to do is to learn the very tools of learning itself. The
liberal arts are...the gold standard for that" (qtd. in Goral). Students, particularly those in the
humanities and social sciences, are thus offered different methods of learning when classes stretch
beyond their major. As is an essential part of a liberal arts education, this breadth of knowledge
enhances the critical and intellectual thinking of students that otherwise might not have had the
opportunity to do so. The creativity and pursuit of knowledge encouraged by non–STEM majors has
much to offer to solve the problems of the world, and a basic understanding of mathematics and
sciences means that these problems seem much more understandable, their solutions more

Affirmative Action At UCLA: Case Study
Betsy Casas CCS 150/ DIS 1D June 10, 2016 CCS 150 Final Paper Affirmative Action at UCLA:
Part I Chancellor Block proposed the Bruin Diversity Plan with the objective of promoting a
diverse student body. His mission with this plan would be; 1) to reduce the historical deficit of
traditionally disfavored minority groups (Latinx, African Americans, and Native Americans), 2) to
counter the effects of societal discrimination, 3) to increase the number of professionals in currently
underserved communities, and 4) to acquire the educational benefits that flow from a diverse
student body. In order to achieve these goals he plans to use a point system which awards applicants

Bollinger case, the University of Michigan College of Literature, Science, and the Arts was sued
because of its use of race as a factor in the point system the school used for admissions decisions.
Every applicant who belonged to an underrepresented minority group was automatically distributed
20 points, which had the potential to become a decisive factor in the admission or rejection of the
applicant. The Court held that even though the University wanted to further the compelling interest
of achieving a diverse student body, it did not do it in a narrowly–tailored manner. The University
did not give applicants an individualized review of their applications and used race as a decisive
factor and not a plus factor in the admissions decisions, which is unconstitutional. The Bruin
Diversity Plan does intend to use a point system which automatically awards 20 points to Latinx,
African Americans, and Native Americans because of their "potential contribution to campus
cultural diversity." This would be deemed unconstitutional on the grounds of the Gratz case
because by automatically awarding 20 points because of race solely to applicants, the factor of race
would become a decisive factor in admissions and would not be narrowly–tailored enough to justify
the program's use of

members to execute programs efficiently, maintain productive client relationships, master team
building and manage budgets at a program level. To become a successful director and then the CEO

global management, business strategy implementation, finance, and marketing. Most importantly, I
want to strengthen my leadership skills to become the one who creates a vision, directs the course

UCLA's plan to take its B–school private Case Study
Introduction:
UCLA colleges are currently public institutions, partially funded by the state of California. The
UCLA Anderson Graduate School of Management, the business school part of the UCLA system,
wants to become more like a private institution. This would mean that the business school would no
longer receive funds from the state, and can be under less regulation. By receiving greater
autonomy, the business school can more easily and more quickly raise its tuition. In addition, the
business school would be able to plan long term initiatives without having to worry about
appropriation fights in the California legislature. Judy Olian, Dean of the business school, said, "Our
intent is to gain managerial flexibility and to align decision–making authority with those in the best
position to make those judgments. Currently, certain salary decisions require multiple levels of
approval from entities that lack an intimate knowledge of our competitive marketplace and academic
disciplines."
Various faculty governance groups not affiliated with the AndersonGraduate School of Management
oppose privatization. They claim it is economically unfair. These opponents cite a faculty senate
report, which states that privatization "does not account for the asset value of the school and the
investment value to California taxpayers from over 75 years of state support."
Other critics claim

Statement Of Purpose: UCLA Unicamp I believe that everyone the potential to make a difference in this world; it is just so that many don't have a support system to push them towards achieving a goal. Kids from the beginning are perpetually convinced that they are worthless and that they could never be successful. Fortunately, I am blessed with a community who gave me the confidence to discover that I can achieve whatever I wish for in life; that group of people is UCLA Unicamp. UCLA Unicamp is an organization that strives on changing kids lives' from all over Los Angeles. The counselors conducted captivating workshops that taught us not to trust stereotypes and statistics because they can't define who a person is. Developing this type of mindset allowed me to open up to new people easily and that lead to new friendships. I learned that in every person was someone new and beautiful who could become my friend. I became more confident to escape my ethnic bubble and to make new friends of different races; we all truly have such authentic personalities and by coming together we build distinctive relationships that truly exhibit diversity. Out of everything I learned at camp the lesson I am most grateful for is learning how to be a leader and how initiating leadership can influence change all around Get more content on HelpWriting.net

UCLA Law: Case Study I wanted to write you directly, first to thank you for your generous gift to UCLA Law, and second to offer an explanation and apology for the miscommunication acknowledging your generosity. Dean Mnookin shared your correspondence with me and immediately I contacted my colleague, Mike Gyulai, Executive Director of Annual Giving at the UCLA Foundation to address your valid concerns. I am pleased to share with you that your gifts have been appropriately designated to the UCLA Law Dean's Discretionary Fund. The acknowledgment sent from the UCLA Foundation used a shortened name, listing the account as Dean's Discretionary Fund. Mike was very receptive to concerns that this shortened listing can easily lead to confusion for recipients. Adjustments will be made and Mike assured me that moving forward the UCLA Foundation will use the full account name for gift acknowledgments....show more content... Ronald Reagan Ucla Medical Center Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, Los Angeles, CA HSM 310 2012 Scarlett Vidaurre Professor Lee 8/5/2012 The mission of the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center is to provide excellent patient care in support of the educational and scientific programs of the schools of the UCLA Center for the Health Sciences. Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center was built in response to the damage incurred by the old hospital structure during the 1994 Northridge earthquake. These are laid out so that the bed is in the center of the room allowing staff to treat a patient from all sides. In the event that a patient needs to be moved from an ICU room to surgery, the ceiling boom in an ICU room has an equipment arm and portable trolley with battery that detaches and can go with the patient, saving critical preparation–for–transport time. All of these features are built into each room to allow the rooms to function as needs develop. Unlike most hospitals, every floor here is dedicated to a particular specialty and all of the support equipment and supplies for those patients is located on the very same floor. Crisscrossing corridors in the nurse's area make access to the supplies equal–distance from any of the patient rooms. Finally, every floor has its own satellite pharmacy, dialysis storage, respiratory therapy workrooms, and resident doctor sleep rooms, making every floor nearly self–sufficient. The latest wireless technology has been installed so that the hospital is paperless, that is, it uses advanced communication technologies that provide both medical professionals and patient's better access to relevant medical records and research data. Clinical staff has access to electronic patient charts at every bedside. Patients and visitors have wireless Internet access throughout the building. • 7. Personal Statement: How To Succeed At UCLA At 17 years old I entered UCLA as a biology major. With my prior successful academic performance and younger age, I was overconfident and immature going into college. During my first 4 quarters my social pursuits smothered my academic ones; I lived a very unbalanced life, and my grades suffered. My second winter break was the turning point, and I realized that committing only 50% effort to academics would not be enough. I acknowledged my mistakes and became entirely determined to change my path from that point forward. I created a list titled "How to Succeed at UCLA," which outlined the steps needed to regain balance and ensure academic success. I changed every aspect of my life from what I ate, to who I spent time with, to what time I went Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. Personal Narrative: My UCLA Field Trip UCLA field trip For my first science event I chose the UCLA field trip I went on with my biology. On Saturday April 16 , my biology classmates and I went to UCLA citylab. CityLab at UCLA is a science educational program run by UCLA undergraduate and graduate students that shows high school students to develop the world of biotechnology though "hands on" laboratory experience. I choose this event because it was so educating and fun. These city labs help me develop my skills in biology. While working in labs I also have fun , in citylab they make these plays that involve a problem that we need to solve. In this UCLA citylab , the problem was finding rapanzels real mother. In order to find her mother we needed to distract DNA from Mother Gothel and the Queen. In the end we found rapanzels real mother to be the Queen. I choose this event because I learned more about biology and I had a blast while doing the labs. I did not know what to expect because I've never seen a play before , especially about my favorite movie. I chose this event because I thought it could teach me about acting and confidence. Two things I lack. I am terrified of going in front of a class, so I can not imagine going in front of a auditorium full of people. I've always loved musicals and plays and acting in general. • 9. I would like to share a brief story on how my feelings for UCLA has changed since the application process. My initial thought of the institution was nothing but respect for the academic opportunities it offers. The one thing I underlooked was the community as well as the atmosphere it had. During the middle of spring break, my sisters took me on a trip as a way of congratulating me for my college acceptances. We drove across California visiting campuses starting from Davis, Irvine, and then San Diego. I was told we were heading to LA afterwards which I was a bit hesitant on. I didn't know much about the place as I've been stuck in two cities my entire life: Yangon and San Francisco. On top of that, I knew I didn't get into UCLA which naturally pushed me away from the city. The truth was that...show more content... We were on our way to a restaurant at the time and unknowingly entered the outer edge of UCLA's campus. The first thought that came into my mind was the atmosphere. The schools that I visited earlier are amazing in their own rights but UCLA's atmosphere had the biggest impact on me. It was one where there was a healthy balance of calmness while having the persistence to get work done. I believe that the surrounding environment heavily impacts the performance of a student. It does not matter how good a school may be when there are nothing around to alleviate your stress. In this case for UCLA, there are amazing sights all around to look forward to after a well fought exam. Later in the trip, I began to appreciate the city of Los Angeles for its diversity after visiting Koreatown, Thai–town, and Little Tokyo. It is an aspect that makes me feel at home and sets up the stage for me to perform. There were attraction sites such as the Santa Monica Mall and The Grove that really amazed me. I was admittedly jealous that the students can enjoy this nightlife at their Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. UCLA Housing Case Study The inceptive goal of the project was to create a set of concrete guidelines for sustainable procurement within UCLA Housing, with an emphasis on commonly used office supplies. The current UCOP and H&HS guidelines on purchasing are vague and makes it difficult for purchasers to discern between what is environmentally preferred or what is not. Emma suggested for the team to create a system of comprehensive purchasing standards that would streamline sustainable procurement and maximize UCLA Housing's use of eco–friendly goods. The team intended to create the guidelines based on several third party certifications like the EPA's Comprehensive Procurement Guidelines and University of California Sustainable Practices Policy. However, we soon discovered that the EPA's Comprehensive Procurement Guidelines was the only set of guidelines that incorporated office supplies. Furthermore, the...show more content... • 11. My Experience At The Library Bruno Ouattara November 2013 880 390 199 Sociology 100 In November 19th, 2013, it was raining when I came to school. Just after my English class, I was heading to the library to find a quiet place where I could study. I saw a group of Asian's students coming out from the library, and one of them, a girl, was holding an umbrella. So I walked straight to her and I soon as I got very close to her, without introducing myself, I grabbed her umbrella. Surprised she didn't know what to expect. She just dropped the umbrella in my hands, and I walked inside the library with the umbrella on top of my head. She stood under the rain, very surprised and was looking back...show more content... There were also some students standing just against the wall and smoking cigarettes. Just in the entrance of building 25, I saw a security guy passing by, and talking to students from table to table. I think he was trying to tell them to put their phones away and do not leave them at the table because they can be stolen. While I was getting closer and closer the girl and her friends were trying to get together in one side and let me pass, and they were kind of slowing down because I was running into them. But I think I didn't give too much choice to her; she released the umbrella because she was surprised or afraid; so she didn't resist. But after she released it, she felt weird to let me take the umbrella; I can tell in her surprising's face. Her friends walked back and all of the sudden they started to talk in Chinese or Japanese (I don't actually know the difference) like 30 seconds after I took the umbrella and started to walk back in the library after me. The smokers were watching the scene and one of them was laughing. They started to kind of want to follow me inside and I didn't just walked away, instead I stopped just inside to look one more time and see if someone was going to talk. The lady at the front desk was looking quiet and some others students inside also. When they come in front of me, I realized they needed an answer. And that influenced me to give up. • 13. Liberal Arts Education Essay A liberal arts education is one that, by definition, focuses not on one specific subject, but rather prepares its student by giving them knowledge in many areas and developing the student's critical thinking that will allow them to adapt to an ever–changing world. Naturally, this means students at a university that employs a liberal arts education take classes outside their major. Students of the humanities or social sciences must enroll in courses of mathematics and natural sciences, and while many find no joy in such requirements, they better the individual and are helpful in everyday life, as well as in larger issues. As Crane and Chiles so eloquently write, specifically of science, "Science matters at a liberal–arts university because the problems facing our global community will not be solved by scientists alone." Mathematics as a subject acts in a similar way, giving skills to students, non–mathematics majors included, to help in their everyday lives or potentially to help the world. ...show more content... To do that, Chopp argues that "What you have to do is to learn the very tools of learning itself. The liberal arts are...the gold standard for that" (qtd. in Goral). Students, particularly those in the humanities and social sciences, are thus offered different methods of learning when classes stretch beyond their major. As is an essential part of a liberal arts education, this breadth of knowledge enhances the critical and intellectual thinking of students that otherwise might not have had the opportunity to do so. The creativity and pursuit of knowledge encouraged by non–STEM majors has much to offer to solve the problems of the world, and a basic understanding of mathematics and sciences means that these problems seem much more understandable, their solutions more Get more content on HelpWriting.net

Affirmative Action At UCLA: Case Study Betsy Casas CCS 150/ DIS 1D June 10, 2016 CCS 150 Final Paper Affirmative Action at UCLA: Part I Chancellor Block proposed the Bruin Diversity Plan with the objective of promoting a diverse student body. His mission with this plan would be; 1) to reduce the historical deficit of traditionally disfavored minority groups (Latinx, African Americans, and Native Americans), 2) to counter the effects of societal discrimination, 3) to increase the number of professionals in currently underserved communities, and 4) to acquire the educational benefits that flow from a diverse student body. In order to achieve these goals he plans to use a point system which awards applicants points based on 7 categories. These categories vary in potential points accorded,...show more content... Bollinger case, the University of Michigan College of Literature, Science, and the Arts was sued because of its use of race as a factor in the point system the school used for admissions decisions. Every applicant who belonged to an underrepresented minority group was automatically distributed 20 points, which had the potential to become a decisive factor in the admission or rejection of the applicant. The Court held that even though the University wanted to further the compelling interest of achieving a diverse student body, it did not do it in a narrowly–tailored manner. The University did not give applicants an individualized review of their applications and used race as a decisive factor and not a plus factor in the admissions decisions, which is unconstitutional. The Bruin Diversity Plan does intend to use a point system which automatically awards 20 points to Latinx, African Americans, and Native Americans because of their "potential contribution to campus cultural diversity." This would be deemed unconstitutional on the grounds of the Gratz case because by automatically awarding 20 points because of race solely to applicants, the factor of race would become a decisive factor in admissions and would not be narrowly–tailored enough to justify the program's use of Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 15. UCLA Anderson Case Study Upon graduation from UCLA Anderson, I will seek a position as a Director in the technology department of a large multinational company such as Google, Microsoft or Oracle. In the long term, I hope to advance to a Vice President role and gradually become the CEO of a similar company. My current position as a senior project manager has given me experience in leading a team of 80 members to execute programs efficiently, maintain productive client relationships, master team building and manage budgets at a program level. To become a successful director and then the CEO of a large multinational company, I will need to acquire the strongest possible skills required for global management, business strategy implementation, finance, and marketing. • 18. Ucla 's Pl School Private Case Study Essay Michael Fleischmann Ethics in Business Dr. Redd UCLA's plan to take its B–school private Case Study Introduction: UCLA colleges are currently public institutions, partially funded by the state of California. The UCLA Anderson Graduate School of Management, the business school part of the UCLA system, wants to become more like a private institution. This would mean that the business school would no longer receive funds from the state, and can be under less regulation. By receiving greater autonomy, the business school can more easily and more quickly raise its tuition. In addition, the business school would be able to plan long term initiatives without having to worry about appropriation fights in the California legislature. Judy Olian, Dean of the business school, said, "Our intent is to gain managerial flexibility and to align decision–making authority with those in the best position to make those judgments. Currently, certain salary decisions require multiple levels of approval from entities that lack an intimate knowledge of our competitive marketplace and academic disciplines." Various faculty governance groups not affiliated with the AndersonGraduate School of Management oppose privatization. They claim it is economically unfair. These opponents cite a faculty senate report, which states that privatization "does not account for the asset value of the school and the investment value to California taxpayers from over 75 years of state support."
