There is an ever broadening problem spreading throughout colleges all across America: cheating.
Is it a serious offence or just a harmless crime? Cheating is on the rise, but schools and colleges are
not far behind with ways of dealing with it. Mark Clayton deals with this issue in his essay entitled
"A Whole Lot of Cheatin' Going On."
Clayton's essay is heavily quoted along with an obvious absence of his ideas. The reader is
supposed to believe that his quotes accurately represent his views on the matter at hand. Clayton's
essay is primarily pathos due to the amount of quoted ideas.

According to Who's Who among American High School Students, "80 percent [of high school
students] said they had cheated during their academic careers." (21) Such logos is a common sight
in Clayton's essay. Another fact that helps prove his point that cheating is only getting worse would
be when he states that, "66 percent of the parents of these top students [Who's Who] said cheating
was 'not a big deal.'" Clayton tries to start his essay with a nice variety of pathos, ethos, and logos,
but he ends up overwhelming his readers with other people's quotes.
In the next section of Clayton's article he describes how colleges are starting to fight back. He says
colleges are starting to condemn dishonesty; some are even making students' cases very public so
as to advertise their willingness to deal with cheating. Some schools are trying to prevent cheating
before it has a chance to happen by performing skits at freshman orientation as well as giving out

[McCabe, 1996] both the type and the frequency of cheating by students vary widely.

fails to tell you if it is right or wrong to cheat. People have many different beliefs when it comes to
cheating; some think its fine to do while others completely disapprove. I intend to show the different
beliefs, from different perspectives of people, and also intend on proving which beliefs have the
strongest and weakest arguments.
An ethical egoist could argue that we have an obligation to cheat. Ethical egoists maintain the belief
that we should act selfishly. We should do things that we believe in our self–interest, which is our

Deontology on the other hand would argue that you should not cheat. Deontology assumes that we
all have clear sets of duties that we ought to obey, these are given to us from God or our own
reason. Therefore cheating is obviously wrong, so you ought not to cheat. Deontology believes that
you have a set of duties that you follow. In deontological ethics, an action is considered morally
good because of some characteristic of the action itself, not because the result of the action is good.
Of the three approaches to ethics that are mentioned above I think that the egoists support of
cheating makes the best argument. Although, I personally do not believe in cheating I do think that
egoist do justify the act of cheating. Egoists feel that we should put our selves before all others and
that we should do what makes us happy. They feel that whatever will benefit us most will in turn
make us happier.
I think the comparison of the strongest argument brings out the weaknesses in the other two
arguments. I feel that utilitarianism does not have as strong of an argument for cheating, because
they do not look at the entire situation and also they are interested in the happiness of themselves,

I had a Supervisor at work who would not ever give me credit when it was due to me. There had
been times when I had made suggestions or performed my duties in an astounding way only to be
cut down or cut off by her. Sometime later I found out she was presenting my suggestions as her
own and taking credit for work I had done. When I presented this situation to her Supervisor she
accused me of lying and trying to take her job. I felt cheated then. I felt cheated because I always
thought that someone in a Supervisory role was someone I could look up to and trust. I thought a
Supervisor was someone who was professional, someone who would value my ideas, offer honest
criticism, hold me accountable, and acknowledge the work I did. I felt cheated because I didn't
expect that a Supervisor could be the opposite of my professional expectations, she was instead

Cheating Is Getting Worse Cheating is a problem worldwide, everyone can admit they've cheated
before or at least say they've witnessed someone cheat before. The term "cheating" can be
interpreted in different ways, according to (Webster's Dictionary) cheating has several meanings "a
deception to profit yourself", "not faithful to a spouse or lover" and "violating accepted standards or
rules". People have been caught red handed while cheating, while others were lucky enough to
avoid the consequences. The real question is why do people take the risk and decide to cheat
knowing that there is a consequence? Cheating is an epidemic spread that is becoming worse, it's
becoming worse in schools, sports and relationships.
Today's generation has been showing the highest test scores, students have received all kinds of
honors which include scholarships. "In 2009, 60 schools had been reported to the Pennsylvania
of Education of suspicion of cheating" (New Orleans Magazine). They were reported of getting
nearly practically impossible test scores. Not only are students accused of cheating but the
teachers themselves are accused of cheating. Some atlanta teachers were interviewed according to
(New Orleans Magazine) "Atlanta teachers said they cheated because they were afraid of losing
their jobs". Not only that "56 schools were investigated, 44 of them had participated in organized
cheating on standardized tests" (New Orleans Magazine). Teachers changed answers on student's
tests and determined if the students would be bumped up a grade. Students that often cheat are
driven by an incentive to earn or obtain undeserved grades. Most students cheat to achieve a
specific goal whether it's a degree or some kind of certificate. Students have a bad mindset which
causes procrastination, perhaps one day a student would be out partying or keeping themselves busy
knowing they had homework to do. Later when it comes to the last minute they just need a quick
response so they rely on cheating. With today's technology you can get almost anything over the
internet. The use of the internet can provide several assignments for a student including essays. This

In any type of discussion, the feelings behind cheating always range from an infinite amount of
possibilities. Cheating is the delicate nature and relationship–breaker that no one wants to ever
experience in their lifestyle. Some individuals argue that cheating is sometimes justified depending
on the circumstances considered. To a limit extent that opinion may be true, however, I agree with
