One night, in 1987 in the final years of the cold war, a board member of X
answered a frantic knock at his hotel door. A Russian Engineer nervously
handed him a disk and walked away.
In the late 1980s, X had been developing a product Y, a key part of which was a
software for handwriting recognition. However, even after years of research X
couldn't figure out how to get it working. The disk that the Russian engineer gave
X, contained the code for the software, which would eventually make it to Y as a
key feature.
However, X could never really get the software to work with a good accuracy,
making the software a much ridiculed feature of Y, with comics recognising Y as
the product which often misunderstood the words.
What are X and Y?
X: Apple
Y: Apple Newton
Q. 5
X is an effect associated with the blocking of e-mails, forum posts or search results
by a spam filter or search engine because their text contains a string of letters that
are shared with an obscene word.
While computers can easily identify strings of text within a document, broad blocking
rules may result in false positives, causing innocent phrases to be blocked.
The problem was named after an incident in 1996 in which AOL's profanity filter
prevented residents of a town X in Lincolnshire, England, from creating accounts
with AOL, because the X contained a profanity in the substring.
For example, the URL shitakemushroom[dot]com was refused by ICANN, as the
string contained the word ‘shit’.
What is X?
X: Scunthorpe

Founded in 1761 at Stein near Nuremberg by cabinet
maker Kaspar X, the enterprise has remained in the X
family for eight generations. It opened branches in New
York, London, Paris, and expanded to Vienna and St.
Petersburg. It opened a factory in Geroldsgrün. It
expanded internationally and launched new products
under Kaspar X's ambitious great-grandson, Lothar. In
1900, after the marriage of Lothar's granddaughter with
a cadet of the Counts of Y, the A.W. Y enterprise took
the name of XY and a new logo, combining the X motto,
Since 1761, with the "jousting knights" of the Ys' coat-
of-arms.
X: Faber Y: Castell
Q. 12
The original factory, a paper mill, was created near
the Odet river in France. The 2nd factory was
created in 1893 in Cascadec, France. By 1918 the
brand was truly created by René Bolloré and given
its current name on the basis of its origins. By 1930
over 86 million packets of it were being sold with
the USA being the major consumer. Since then the

Q. 13
X was founded in Cambridge, Massachusetts by Edwin Land in
1937. Described by the Boston Globe as a "juggernaut of
innovation", in many respects X was the Apple of its time with
"a Steve Jobs style leader in Edwin Land, a scientist who
guided the company as the founding CEO for four decades“.
During World War II,X designed and manufactured numerous
products for the armed services including an infrared night
viewing device. Land’s name appears on 533 US patents,
second only to Thomas Edison’s 1,093. He led the company as
CEO For 43 years, he headed the X, developing it from a small
research and marketing firm into one of the best-known high-
tech companies ever.
Polaroid Corporation
Q. 14
X was an advertising campaign for the Volkswagen Beetle, created at the
Doyle Dane Bernbach (DDB) agency in 1959.
It was ranked as the best advertising campaign of the twentieth century by
Ad Age,] in a survey of North American advertisements.
The campaign has been considered so successful that it "did much more
than boost sales and build a lifetime of brand loyalty [...] The ad, and the
work of the ad agency behind it, changed the very nature of advertising—
from the way it's created to what you see as a consumer today.“
Print advertisements for the campaign were filled mostly with white space,
with a small image of the Beetle shown, which was meant to emphasize its
simplicity and minimalism, and the text and fine print that appeared at the
bottom of the page listed the advantages of owning a Beetle.

Q. 15
The company was founded in 1994 in Sweden by Cristian von X.
The founder of X got the idea to build his own car after watching the
Norwegian stop-motion animated movie Pinchcliffe Grand Prix in his
youth. He took his first steps in the world of business in his early
20s running a trading company called Alpraaz in Stockholm,
Sweden. The success of this venture gave him the necessary
financial standing to launch his chosen career as a car
manufacturer.
In 2009, X attempted to take over Saab from General Motors.
General Motors confirmed on June 16 that they had chosen X
Group as the buyer of Saab Automobile. However, X decided not to
finalise the purchase of Saab and therefore left the negotiations.
The timing uncertainty of finalization of the take over was the
reason X stated for leaving the deal.

Q. 20
There are two statements on this law: one by Eric S. Raymond
concerning software bug detection by a community, and the other by the
person after whom it is named, about the motivations of programmers.
The statement by Raymond, says: "given enough eyeballs, all bugs are
shallow" ; or more formally: "Given a large enough beta-tester and co-
developer base, almost every problem will be characterized quickly and
the fix will be obvious to someone.
"The other statement on this law, mentioned in the prologue "What
Makes Hackers Tick? a.k.a. X’s Law", suggests that every motivation
that makes a person do something can be classified under "survival",
"social life" or "entertainment". As a result, progress is defined as
reaching a higher category; that is, not doing a thing merely for survival,
but for social reasons, and then, even better, just for fun.
Which law is this?
Linus' Law
Q. 21
_________ is a programming language designed by David Morgan-Mar, whose
programs are bitmaps that look like abstract art The compilation is guided by a
"pointer" that moves around the image, from one continuous coloured region to
the next. Procedures are carried through when the pointer exits a region. There
are 20 colours for which behaviour is specified: 18 "colourful" colours, which are
ordered by a 6-step hue cycle and a 3-step brightness cycle; and black and white
which are not ordered. When exiting a "colourful" colour and entering another one,
the performed procedure is determined by the number of steps of change in hue
and brightness. Black cannot be entered; when the pointer tries to enter a black
region, the rules of choosing the next block are changed instead. If all possible
rules are tried, the program terminates. Regions outside the borders of the image
are also treated as black. White does not perform operations, but allows the
pointer to "pass through".
The behaviour of colours other than the 20 specified is left to the compiler or
interpreter. Variables are stored in memory as signed integers in a single stack.
Most specified procedures deal with operations on that stack, others with
input/output and with the rules by which the compilation pointer moves. ________
was named after the famous painter ________. The originally intended name was
already taken.

Q. 22
The origins of this franchise, a division of the Jim
Pattison Group, lie in the revelation in 1929 that the
Star-spangled banner was not the National Anthem of
the United States of America.
The inaugural issue of the franchise resulted in renewed
attention to the issue and on March 3, 1931, U.S.
President Herbert Hoover signed an act that officially
made "The Star Spangled Banner" the national anthem
for the United States.
The collection of the franchise includes 20,000
photographs, 30,000 artifacts and more than 100,000
cartoon panels. Which brand are we talking about?
RIPLEY’s ENTERTAINMENT or

A X cup (also known as a Greedy
Cup or a Tantalus cup) is a form of
drinking cup that forces its user to
imbibe only in moderation. Credited
to X of Samos, it allows the user to
fill the cup with wine up to a certain
level. If he fills the cup only to that
level, the imbiber may enjoy a drink
in peace. If he exhibits gluttony,
however, the cup spills its entire
contents out the bottom (onto the
lap of the immodest drinker).

Which activity does the song support?
CPR
The Bee Gees' song "Stayin' Alive" is used to
train medical professionals to provide the correct
number of chest compressions per minute while

Pierre Samuel X de Nemours was a French writer, economist,
publisher and government official. By early 1760s X’s writings on
the national economy had drawn the attention of intellectuals such
as Voltaire and Turgot. His 1768 book on physiocracy, which
advocated low tariffs and free trade among nations, deeply
influenced Adam Smith of Scotland. In the United States, X
developed strong ties with industry and government, in particular
with Thomas Jefferson. He was the originator of an idea that
eventually became the Louisiana Purchase, as a way to avoid
French troops landing in New Orleans, and possibly sparking armed
conflict with U.S. Éleuthère, his son, who had studied chemistry in
France with Antoine Lavoisier, founded a gunpowder manufacturing
plant, based on his experience in France as a chemist.

Q. 27
In the early days of air travel, aviators needed an easier way to compare times
than by using a bulky chronometer in a cramped cockpit. The solution to the
problem came from none other than Charles Lindbergh, the first man to fly solo
across the Atlantic Ocean.
When Lindbergh returned from his heroic flight, he immediately set out to design
the Hour Angle wristwatch and found a willing partner for its manufacture in X.
The watch featured a demarcated rotating bezel that allowed for the equation of
time (the difference between a standardized 24-hour day and the fluctuating time
of the Earth’s travel around the sun), vital for an accurate calculation of longitude.
A rotating centeal disc on the dial allowed for the synchronization of the seconds
without stopping the sweeping hand. And unique dial markings allowed a pilot to
instantly tell his location by corresponding the time with the earth’s 360-degree
rotation (the “hour angle’). Built to his specifications, it is still produced today.
Founded by Auguste Agassiz in 1832, X is owned by the Swatch Group today. X
also provided timers used at the first modern Olympics in 1896.
Javier Soltero, quit his day job as VMWare CTO in 2012, to start
building applications. He along with his partner, Satish
Dharmaraj created a email client for mobile, called Accompli.
Accompli, had smart filters which’d send you only notifications
for important email and segregate the newsletters email and
other email from social media services into an other section. The
client also had a calendar section to sync with calendar events.
Today, however, we know Accompli by a completely different
name as it was acquired and merged with another famous
product. How is it known today?

  • 15. Q. 5 X is an effect associated with the blocking of e-mails, forum posts or search results by a spam filter or search engine because their text contains a string of letters that are shared with an obscene word. While computers can easily identify strings of text within a document, broad blocking rules may result in false positives, causing innocent phrases to be blocked. The problem was named after an incident in 1996 in which AOL's profanity filter prevented residents of a town X in Lincolnshire, England, from creating accounts with AOL, because the X contained a profanity in the substring. For example, the URL shitakemushroom[dot]com was refused by ICANN, as the string contained the word ‘shit’. What is X?

General Motors confirmed on June 16 that they had chosen X Group as the buyer of Saab Automobile. However, X decided not to finalise the purchase of Saab and therefore left the negotiations. • 87. Q. 20 There are two statements on this law: one by Eric S. Raymond concerning software bug detection by a community, and the other by the person after whom it is named, about the motivations of programmers. The statement by Raymond, says: "given enough eyeballs, all bugs are shallow" ; or more formally: "Given a large enough beta-tester and co- developer base, almost every problem will be characterized quickly and the fix will be obvious to someone. "The other statement on this law, mentioned in the prologue "What Makes Hackers Tick? a.k.a. X’s Law", suggests that every motivation that makes a person do something can be classified under "survival", "social life" or "entertainment". As a result, progress is defined as reaching a higher category; that is, not doing a thing merely for survival, but for social reasons, and then, even better, just for fun. Which law is this?

  • 90. Q. 21 _________ is a programming language designed by David Morgan-Mar, whose programs are bitmaps that look like abstract art The compilation is guided by a "pointer" that moves around the image, from one continuous coloured region to the next. Procedures are carried through when the pointer exits a region. There are 20 colours for which behaviour is specified: 18 "colourful" colours, which are ordered by a 6-step hue cycle and a 3-step brightness cycle; and black and white which are not ordered. When exiting a "colourful" colour and entering another one, the performed procedure is determined by the number of steps of change in hue and brightness. Black cannot be entered; when the pointer tries to enter a black region, the rules of choosing the next block are changed instead. If all possible rules are tried, the program terminates. Regions outside the borders of the image are also treated as black. White does not perform operations, but allows the pointer to "pass through". The behaviour of colours other than the 20 specified is left to the compiler or interpreter. Variables are stored in memory as signed integers in a single stack. Most specified procedures deal with operations on that stack, others with input/output and with the rules by which the compilation pointer moves. ________ was named after the famous painter ________. The originally intended name was already taken.

  • 108. Q. 27 In the early days of air travel, aviators needed an easier way to compare times than by using a bulky chronometer in a cramped cockpit. The solution to the problem came from none other than Charles Lindbergh, the first man to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. When Lindbergh returned from his heroic flight, he immediately set out to design the Hour Angle wristwatch and found a willing partner for its manufacture in X. The watch featured a demarcated rotating bezel that allowed for the equation of time (the difference between a standardized 24-hour day and the fluctuating time of the Earth’s travel around the sun), vital for an accurate calculation of longitude. A rotating centeal disc on the dial allowed for the synchronization of the seconds without stopping the sweeping hand. And unique dial markings allowed a pilot to instantly tell his location by corresponding the time with the earth’s 360-degree rotation (the “hour angle’). Built to his specifications, it is still produced today. Founded by Auguste Agassiz in 1832, X is owned by the Swatch Group today. X also provided timers used at the first modern Olympics in 1896.
