born in Seville, in 1599
son of Juan Rodríguez de Silva , a
lawyer whose parents, Diogo da Silva
and wife Maria Rodrigues, were
Portuguese Jews.
educated by his parents to fear God and
received good training in languages and
philosophy.
by the early 1620s his position and
reputation were assured in Seville. He
moved to Madrid in 1622. In 1627, he
won a competition for the best painters
of Spain with the subject to be the
expulsion of the Moors.
He died on August 6, 1660.
