Feb 2012 Myself and Emma began putting together a strategy for use of Social Media in library Share our experience of setting up the project, putting together a team, what we did, what we should have done Concentrating on Facebook as sm we use most Avoid our mistakes and help you Still early days and haven’t had full launch – Sept 2012 Available on slideshare
  2. Why we set up project? Already had Library facebook page – Around 85 likes - occasionally used, not very exciting, didn’t encourage interaction 1 person had responsibility – too big a job for 1 person; clear a team was needed. Feb 2012, attended Libraries 2.0 : Social Media for Beginners with Steve Hardman & team
  3. Marketing strategy another talk – touch on it briefly Session with whole library team to feedback from Swansea Central Social Media 2.0 – discuss current use of social media, why we should be using it, etc Gauge reaction to use of Social media Staff development – encourage all staff to sign up to FB and Twitter – monitor like minded/appropriate channels – increase knowledge and awareness of current library trends. Identify and appoint social media team Team to source and update content – fun, informative, non-contentious Marketing - NPT Coll Facebook & Twitter Moodle Poster & sticker campaign NPT Radio

Enthusiastic - Enlightening for us Already had idea of who would be in team Had mental list of sceptics/ anti FB/ eager/warm – proved correct Disheartened – not reaction hoped for, couldn’t do it on own Approached later by 3 members of staff & 1 on sidelines  Disheartening reaction, despite our enthusiasm Indifference, negativity, open hostility Members we thought may embrace it – quiet, possibly because of strong reaction from other team members. Heartened that approached by several of staff shortly after meeting. Session with whole library team to feedback from Swansea Central Social Media 2.0 – discuss current use of social media, why we should be using it, etc Gauge reaction to use of Social media Staff development – encourage all staff to sign up to FB and Twitter – monitor like minded/appropriate channels – increase knowledge and awareness of current library trends.   5. Identified risks associated with posting content Opening of pages to allow comments from outside parties – open to risk To date, no inappropriate pages/negative comments
  6. Hardest parts of project for us was giving over control of posting to others!! Control freaks – way out of comfort zone, but not going to work unless you trust team members, - be prepared for some posts you’re not happy with, live with it! To negate risks, drew up guidelines for staff Drew attention to risks and put series of controls in place Eg, non-political, non-contentious, avoid religion, impartial, data protection, no bad langyage, defamatory comments, copyrigth, data protection etc. If in doubt leave it out! Ask for advice from library management Moderation guidelines – constant monitoring. Suggestions on who staff should like/ follow to get good information/ post ideas. Drew up list of good post suggestions , Orkney, Swansea Libs, Edinburgh, resources we buy such as New Scientist, Credo ref Meeting- use of Skype
  7. Topical stuff, keep it light Informative but fun Tenuous links to library stuff Eg, Dr Who, new series, link to catalogue and books Film tie ins Rainy weather – download an e-book Encourage dialogue not monologue No rules/ no negativity
  8. Weekend posts – Gerald/ Jo/Em – on Facebook anyway, not erroneous to add post
  9. Not yet launched page FB feeding into Twitter Insights page – more meaningful info than likes – Students have asked who updates page – like it. Ordered and promoted LGBT resources with input from LGBT students
