lead scientist, devoted to reduce
significantly the consequences of
natural hazards.

The application of science and technology
can substantially reduce losses of lives and
property, as is illustrated by several studies.
Over the last three decades, scientific
knowledge of the intensity and distribution
in time and space of natural hazards and the
technological means of confronting them
have expanded greatly.

 Two engineering students at George Mason University harnessed sound
to put out fires Their chemical-free, water-free extinguisher uses sound
waves to separate burning fuel from oxygen. Fire dies out without
oxygen, so using the sound wave extinguisher on a small fire snuffs it out.
 Researchers previously patented this idea but this is the first sound
wave extinguisher to work reliably . Not only does it work, but the final
prototype is handheld (though, admittedly large) and only cost $600 to
build.

The principle behind the extinguisher is simple as they
are mechanical pressure waves that cause vibrations in the
medium in which they travel, sound waves have the potential to
manipulate both burning material and the oxygen that
surrounds it.
Tran and Robertson explored the impact of different
frequencies of sound on small fires. Bass frequencies between
30 and 60 Hz produced the desired extinguishing effect.
Consisting of an amplifier and cardboard collimator to focus the
sound, the duo's final extinguisher prototype – which cost them
only about $600 to develop – is a hand-held, 9 kg, mains-
powered device with the capacity to quickly put out small,
alcohol-fuelled fires.

Uses of Wave Extinguisher
Having acquired a preliminary patent application for the
design, the researchers are now hoping to move onto
further testing and refinements of their extinguisher, with
the aim of taking steps towards a potential commercial
application.
A possible complication may lie in the heat inherent in
larger blazes.
As the sonic extinguisher contains no coolant, it may be
unable to prevent larger fires from reigniting after the
sound is turned off.

scope in Bangladesh
Though Wave Extinguisher was first invented in 2012,
There is rarely any use of wave extinguisher to tackle fire
hazard in Bangladesh.

Wave extinguisher would be one of the best
extinguisher for Bangladesh because of:
Rather than asphyxiating agent, wave extinguisher is less
costly and needs less manpower;
The technology and system design is simple .
Cost is low and handing is very much simple.
Waterless extinguishers for stopping forest fires during
droughts. Which is very much important for agricultural
country like Bangladesh especially in the northern side.
Instead of limitations, shortcomings; there are huge
possibilities and scopes of Wave Extinguisher in the
perspective of Bangladesh as well as in the whole world.
