The word ‘volk’ refers to the Afrikaner term for people
In the Afrikaner Nationalist view the ‘volk’ was white
people, who spoke Afrikaans and shared the same
religious and cultural views as the imagined Afrikaner
nation in south Africa.
 unifying the ‘volk’ as a strong nation was said to be the
way to obtain social and economic power for the Afrikaners
in South Africa.
greater quality education for the ‘volk’
Better paying jobs created to suit the skill set of the ‘volk’
Eradicating the legacy of “poor whites” created by the
great depression.
Ideas of the Dutch Rearmed Church of Holland in
government.
Getting rid of work competition (Bantu education)
Media promoting Afrikaner Nationalist views.
Christian nationalism

Christian nationalist views saw the national party to
power in south Africa (1948 elections)
Winning slogan: ‘swart gevaar’ (black danger)
This meant that blacks were a danger or weakness to the
Afrikaner’s development in south Africa so they had to be
kept separate from the pure ‘volk’
This led to the establishment of apartheid policy : the
strict separation of geographic and socio economic
resources on the bases of race. Aimed at keeping the white
Afrikaners at a position of superiority in the country.

bragging rights for the week. In the case of
a tie the teacher will conduct a pop quiz
which will determine the winner
