APIs have issues on a routine basis, and 90% of those issues are not resolved in the first 24 hours. That’s because these issues are not caught with most tests used today. There is a huge difference between uptime and functional uptime. We will go through the most common problems we have seen with APIs that no one is catching, and how simple changes to testing and monitoring procedures can solve for that.

There’s an inherent tension for organizations doing API development: how to keep both your API developers as well as your infrastructure happy, at the same time. Decoupling front-end and back-end development allows parallel development, and helps keep your front-end, middle-end, and back-end efforts working asynchronously. This speeds progress, but requires far more – and far better – collaboration to be successful. Even an independent developer working with APIs requires good collaboration tools. In this talk, Abhinav Asthana will provide tips on how to improve in API development using collaboration tools like executable API descriptions, API mock servers, and documentation. He will include specific examples of how companies (such as VMware, Coursera, and AMC Theatres) have used collaboration to attain more agile development, to onboard developers, and to ensure input from all participants/stakeholders.

Our project was a classic example of Selenium gone wild! As our team embraced the test automation journey, we went crazy and implemented tons of Selenium tests, one for every permutation possible. Soon we realized our feedback cycles were delayed. Our builds were taking hours instead of minutes. And we had a set of complex, fragile tests, which resulted in a lot of false-negative scenarios and finger pointing. At this point, our team had realized that this is not the path forward. We decided to seriously look at our Selenium tests. We pretty much moved 80% of our Se tests to lower-layers (non-GUI based) tests. And now we have the right testing pyramid on our project. In this presentation, Naresh Jain explains IDeaS' journey (strategy, techniques, tools, mindset-change and approaches we took) through this transition.

It’s important to choose words carefully to convey the correct meaning and avoid harmful subtext or exclusion. Let’s explore some of the tools and triage methods that it takes from an engineering viewpoint to make bias-free choices. How can you ensure that biased words do not sneak into code, UI, docs, configurations, or our everyday language? First, let’s walk through how to take an inventory of assets from code to config files to API specifications to standards. Next, by placing those findings into categories, prioritize the work to substitute with inclusive alternatives. Let’s examine some examples using both API and code assets. Next is a demonstration of how to automate analyzing your source code or documentation with a linter, looking for patterns based on rules that are fed into the tool. What’s in the future for these efforts? Inclusive language should expand beyond English and North America efforts. To do so, let’s organize the work with automation tooling, as engineers do.
