On Monday, October 29th, we invited our neighborhood to come and enjoy
a fun event here at our church. As I stood by my car in my Jedi costume, I
greeted over 200 people, most of whom I had never seen before. Neighbors
connected with one another and took notice that our church welcomed them!
I went to bed with a warm heart and much gratitude for all who made the
event awesome (but let’s be honest, most of the work was done by Patty
Kelsey!)
I needed this…for my heart and soul have been deeply troubled by the
violence and hate being expressed within our nation. All my life, I have been
fascinated by the World War 2 era and I could not escape the irony that
people were shot and killed in the United States, simply for being Jewish. I
cannot begin to understand how someone could mail explosives to another
person, simply because they worked for a political party, or had the nerve to
oppose the President. I cannot fathom how any segment of our society
would not quickly and clearly condemn such actions and behaviors…
As the leaves on the liquid amber trees in my front yard turn to orange and
fall to the ground, I find it hard to express gratitude and thanks…yet perhaps
more than ever, I need to. I need to be grateful those explosives were
discovered and that they didn’t hurt anyone. I can be grateful that more
people weren’t hurt or killed in the Tree of Life temple. I can be grateful
that people are waking up…that people from all walks of life have shown up
at Jewish temples and synagogues to express their support for our Jewish
brothers and sisters (I intend to do the same this Friday evening).
We cannot afford to remain isolated in our neighborhood. In the baptism we
witnessed last Sunday, one of the questions asked of the parents was, “Do
you accept the freedom and power God gives you to resist evil, injustice, and
oppression in whatever forms they present themselves?” The waters of our
baptism are not just for us…they are for the world. We have been included
into the movement of peace and healing God has for the world; are you in?
So pray and give thanks without ceasing and in every situation. You might
find it good for your soul; but I caution you! It might also open your eyes and
cause you to venture into the world to do good in the name of Christ. I hope
and pray that you are open to the possibility.

As we move into the culmination of the liturgical year, we sit with some of Jesus’ final teachings to his
disciples and through some of his interactions with the scribes and Pharisees...each of these passages
reveal distinguishing signs of those who truly understand the Good News Jesus brought.

HIGHLIGHTS OF WORSHIP
October 7th - Today, we celebrated World Communion Sunday! We were blessed to experience worship in a
number of languages through song and prayers. Worship opened with an aboriginal Taiwanese chant by
Libeck Kadu. The Invocation was lifted up in both Thai, by Patty Kelsey and translated to English by Norman
Kelsey. Libeck shared the Offertory prayer in Mandarin. The scripture, Isaiah 56:1-8, was read in Italian and
English by Jesse Boone. Pastor Steve’s message was titled, “Together on the Holy Mountain,” and then Pastor
Steve led the sacrament of Holy Communion and the Lord’s Prayer in Spanish. Following worship, a delicious
multicultural luncheon took place on the patio. A wonderful time was had by all.
October 11th - The North District - San Fernando Valley Mission Area #3 Charge Conference took place at
Sherman Oaks UMC. Our District Superintendent, Rev. James R. Powell, was on hand to lead us through the
agenda. NOHO FUMC was represented with a dozen congregants in attendance. We had a nice time
mingling with other area churches.
October 14th - This morning, Patty Kelsey led a moment with children about how we hold on to
meaningless stuff that keeps us from God’s grace and following Jesus. Pastor Steve’s sermon was called
“Finishing First,” based on Mark 10:17-31. We put our security in our stuff, find joy in our stuff, hoard our
stuff, and can’t get rid of our stuff because we might need it. Although we don’t have to sell off everything,
Jesus wants us to have an abundant life. It is one that is not measured in wealth or possessions or the amount of
ease in our lives. Don’t compromise your character in order to increase your stash of possessions. Instead, use
your stash to serve others and to serve where God needs you most. Use what you have to be a blessing to the
world. Make as much as you can, save as much as you can, and give as much as you can. Don’t let your stuff
anchor you down.
October 21st - Today was Laity Sunday where we had a wonderful variety of congregants leading all the
aspects of worship. Thanks to Patty Kelsey for facilitating. We are also grateful to the following people for
taking part in Laity Sunday: Phillip & Rachel Mottaz, Dr. Heemanshu Bhagat, Daniella Lake, Jim Tyree, Jesse
Boone, Sherri Perry, and Doug Eboch; the main message was shared by Norman Kelsey and was based on
Mark 10:35-45, titled, “Becoming Great.” If you want to be great, serve. Serve because the kingdom calls you
to serve. Norman’s sermon was followed by Special Music from Libeck and Shaun Vieten. Following our
fabulous worship service, we enjoyed a Laity Celebration Luncheon in the Social Hall that was prepared by
Pastor Steve and Program Ministries.
October 28th - We had a very special day where we experienced many precious moments, including, the
Sacrament of Baptism of Wyatt Everson Gerdes, son of Cole and Tristen Gerdes. Special music was shared by
Emma, Abigail & Jeff Thomas and an offertory piece, on the cello, by Joyce Deeting. Pastor Steve’s sermon,
“Being Bold,” was based on Mark 10:46-52. What’s going to get you to stand up and get off the side of the
road, to join in with the Christ caravan? What is going to get you to see life in the world better? Where have
you gone blind? We as the followers of Christ are being called to be a part of the healing that needs to take
place in our angry world. Thoughts and prayers are not enough. We have to get up on our feet.

Hello and Happy November.
I have been hard at work on our new web site which we received a
grant from the United Methodist Communications Group!
www.nohofumc.org -- will be up and running soon! My goal is to
launch the site on December 1st but you can get a sneak peek if you
like but know that it’s a work in progress and not officially launched
yet. I’m super excited about this transition. This is not a quick
transition as I am building a web site from the ground up so bear with
me as there will be adjustments being made even after our launch at
the beginning of December as we see what is needed and what might
not be needed in this new WordPress platform. It is very different from
the current Wix program we are using. I think you will find the new
web site much cleaner and more professional looking.

Many thanks to our NOHO FUMC Board of
Trustees, for scheduling a CPR and AED
Training, taught by Dan Doggett.
The class was excellent and the hands on training
was invaluable. Those in attendance left feeling
that we would be able to be effective should the
time come when we needed to jump in and give a
victim a better chance of full recovery.

8. WISH LIST ITEMS

Operation Gratitude has an urgent need for Wish List items to include in care packages for deployed
Service Members, Veterans, First Responders and New Recruit Graduates. More Heroes will receive
Operation Gratitude Care Packages this year than ever before and help is needed to ensure that the
inventory keeps up with the increasing demand.
The Wish List is made up of items that are most requested by the care package recipients and most
needed now to fulfill current orders. With each Wish List item you donate, you put smiles on the faces of
American Heroes. Your expression of gratitude for their service and sacrifice means so much.
· All Purpose Wipes (single & 30ct packs or less) Puzzle Books (7” x 10” preferred size)
· Batteries (AA and/or AAA) Sewing Kits (travel size)
· Deodorant (travel size, non-aerosol Socks (black crew length)
· Drink Mix (individual serving packets) Gum
· Hand Warmers Jerky (individual bags)
· Lip Balm Pencils (mechanical preferred)

All donated items must be new and unopened and have a shelf-life/expiration date of at least 6 months
from the date of receipt by Operation Gratitude.
Donation drop offs are accepted during all Volunteer Hours at Operation Gratitude, 21100 Lassen
Street, Chatsworth 91311 - Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 4 p.m and on assembly days. The building will be
closed on Thursday and Friday, Nov. 22 and 23.
The next Operation Gratitude Volunteer Assembly Day will be Saturday, November 17th, 9 am-12 pm.

9. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 10TH

The United Methodist Women hosts their
annual Holiday Boutique! Come and delight in
our baked goods, homemade jams and jellies,
handmade holiday decorations and gifts and, of
course, the "Second Time Around Table."
All proceeds from this event go toward assisting
several mission projects:
The David & Margaret Youth and Family
Services in LaVerne; The Methodist Hospital
in Arcadia; New Entra Casa; and Toberman
Neighborhood Center in San Pedro.
The UMW are asking for donations for the
second-time-around table. All gently used items
please. Assistance is also needed with set-up for
the boutique. On Monday, November 5th at
9:30 am, the ladies will be cooking in the social
hall kitchen and setting up tables on Friday,
November 9th at 9:30 am in the Social Hall.

The 21st Annual Christmas Tree Lot
It’s hard to believe that Charlie Cox had this idea for a
Tree lot, 21 years ago. This year, the lot opens
November 30th! We are in need of Elves to sign up for
the following positions:
Greeter Elf, Dispatch Elf, Tree Handler Elf, Tree
Loader Elf, Cashier Elf, and Dinner Elf. There are also
community service, volunteer positions for the Scouts,
Wesley Students, and the YMCA Youth & Gov’t Elves.
The tree lot is open and shifts are available on Friday -
Sunday beginning November 30th - December 16th.
That is just 9 days tree lot sales!
Don’t forget set up, load in, and organization days!
*We need a large number of volunteers that are
physically able to lift and carry trees!

10. Genelita Ancheta recently received her Bachelor of
Science in Nursing degree from Chamberlain
University. She had earned an AA degree and
became an RN some years ago. Today most
hospitals require the RN’s to have a BS degree as
well so Genelita enrolled in the on-line program
Chamberlain offers.
In July Ceasar, Brandon and Brian went with
Genelita to Chicago where she walked in the
graduation procession and received her diploma in
person rather than in the mail. The family spent a
week in Chicago and thoroughly enjoyed
sightseeing there.
David Eshleman is now a Licensed
Marriage & Family Therapist. He has
been working with teens, adults, couples
and families since 2012. He completed a 1
year practicum at the South Bay Center
for Counseling and supported patients at
SBCC for another year as a registered
MFT Intern in the Counseling Dept., as
well as a therapist with their Parents and
Children Together (PACT) program. He
also worked for 2 years as a mental health
practitioner under supervision by Ruby
Paparello, LMFT. In addition, he has over
5 years of experience as an educator
working as a 1-1 with young adults on the
Autism Spectrum. He co-facilitates Teen
and Young Adult Autism Spectrum Social
Skills groups at Teen to Young Adult: The
Gathering Place. Currently David works
with individual clients, children, couples
and families in Redondo Beach under
supervision by Jeana DeLay, LMFT.

11. Our first Trunk or Treat was a success!
We were able to meet 200 kids and their
families in our neighborhood and connect
with our community!
Many thanks to God and to those who
supported this idea immediately and with
such enthusiasm! It was awesome to
connect with our community and bring
some joy and fun to the neighborhood.

mourn the death of Charlie.
• Jesse Boone’s 92 year old Grandfather, Daniel, passed away after falling ill
during a lecture in Dallas, Texas.
• Tracy Hagan is recuperating after being readmitted to the hospital to
repair a tear that developed after her surgery.
• Jessica Mesa is still recovering after a liver transplant surgery.
• Joan Finger passed away after her battle with pancreatic cancer.
• Nicole Mijares, 31, was diagnosed with neuro-endocrine CA. Cancer has
metastasized throughout her body and she is now on palliative care.
• Bill Varney is recuperating from his surgery to relieve his sciatic nerve
pain. Although he has found a tiny bit of relief, the doctor’s anticipate
that full recovery will take more time.
• Charley Menendez 23, is waiting for a liver transplant.
• Jeff Thomas is having numbness in his feet and legs and will be
undergoing tests.
• Scott Kaefek has inoperable stage 4 melanoma.
• Donna Stewart suffered strokes with blood clots in her brain and is in
critical condition.
• Judy Andrus underwent surgery to remove ovarian cancer for the 3rd
time. They hoped to remove the last of the lesions.
• Roy Holt had his second birthday and is doing very well. His mother,
Jessica, thanks us for our prayers.
