A NOTE FROM PASTOR JOEY
Under the guise of scholarship thoughtful individuals seek to know and explain
the mysteries of life.  Therefore, we know the why of rainbows involve ambient
moisture and refracted light.  Moreover, the Biblical concept becomes interesting
upon ïŹnding the creation story is tied to a tradition ïŹve thousand years old and
the earth is several billion years old.   How then do we reconcile a six day
creation?
Matthew, Mark, and Luke are called the Synoptic Gospels because in tone, text,
and tenor they have much in common.   The Gospel of John however stands
apart.  John offers no birth narrative or manger scene. The Jesus in this Gospel is
said to have been with God at creation.  John uses imagery to describe Jesus.  We
are told Jesus is Word, Flesh, and Light.  John shares the power of Jesus’ ministry
in teaching and through miracles, but especially in the stories of healing.  Without
equivocation or regard to status Jesus heals.   Insider or outcast it makes no
difference. The Sabbath or not, John tells us Jesus has no concern about
convention, his care is for the hearts and souls of the people.
In Chapter 11:1-45 Jesus is called to heal his friend Lazarus of Bethany.  He is the
brother of Mary and Martha and they have sent word of need. Yet before Jesus
arrives Lazarus dies.  Mary and Martha alternate between chastising Jesus for
coming too late to heal their brother, and celebrating what they assume is the ïŹnal
resurrection when Jesus tells them Lazarus will be raised.
The power of the story is found ïŹrst in the depth of emotion Jesus shows when
told of the death of his friend.  Scholars can discern this because the word used
for those who weep with Mary in verse 32, and the word used for Jesus weeping
in verse 35 are different.  The ïŹrst having to do with a public kind of expression
the second having to do with personal sorrow.  Secondly, the true power of this
passage is seen not in the raising of Lazarus, but in the expectation Jesus shares
and John records.  Jesus expects believers to ïŹnd life in him, and to share that life
with others.  The love of God intends for us to be engaged in a life that begets a
loving creation.
So do things need to be explained?  As a young man an incident happened that
caused me to think I needed to explain it in detail to some people close to me.  I
sought the advice of my dad and he said never explain yourself to those who care
about you because they don’t need it, and those who don’t care about you have
already made up their mind.  Speaking of my dad, he loved rainbows; as a child
when I asked him where they came from, he said the Bible.  They are a visual
promise of God’s presence with us.  It should come as no mystery that each and
every time I see a rainbow, my father, though dead since 1985, is very much alive
in my heart.
Your Friend and Pastor,
Joey

Please mark your calendars and support the
mission work of The United Methodist Women!
Discovery Arts have found that children who are in
the hospital really enjoy playing dress up.
Halloween costumes are a perfect way for them to
rise above their illness to become a Pretty Pretty
Princess or their favorite Superhero.
Just imagine a really sick child and seeing their face
light up when we present them with their very own
costume, that they get to keep. We've seen miracle
smiles, again and again, as a really sick child
transforms themselves and transcends their
circumstances. This is very important during
treatment and it makes a big difference for
children who are in the hospital.
Due to health concerns we can only accept new
costumes. Consider purchasing a few costumes, on
sale, after Halloween. Please drop off costumes in
the church ofïŹce. Happy Halloween!
Costume Drive for Discovery Arts!
To date our congregation has generously
contributed a total of $1,165 to the Imagine No
Malaria campaign. Unfortunately, in sub-Saharan
Africa mosquitos are still biting and taking another
life every 60 seconds.
It is not too late if you did not donate previously or
want to add to your donation. If you write a check,
please write Malaria or INM on the memo line. If
you donate cash, please put it in an envelope and
write Malaria or INM on the outside.

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a
church in possession of a vigorous and vital
ministry must be in want of ïŹnancial support.
Do your part today! Pledge for 2016!
Keep this ministry, this faith machine of ours
in perpetual motion. Sign that pledge card
and return it to the church by November 8th.
As we’ve said – “Keep Calm and Pledge On”.
We are all in this together.
By Jim Doggett
When the church moved to its present location
on Tujunga Avenue, it was necessary to
provide a meeting place for Troop 18 to meet.
It was decided to build a dedicated meeting
place and the Orrills, together with other
craftsmen from the church built what has
become known as the “Scout Hut.” It was
originally located on the east side of the back
patio with the front door facing Bakman
Avenue and with a barbecue pit built on the
patio side. When a new building was built on
that location for the youth department, the
Scout Hut was rotated 90 degrees and moved
to its present location.
Over the years, the building has been used not
only for troop activities, but also for meetings
of Cub Pack 18 and Explorer Post 18, for Girl
Scout unit meetings, and for Boy Scout
District and Council committee meetings and
training events. One summer it was used as
the location for a Cub Scout Day Camp.
When Wesley School needed additional
classroom space a few years ago, a space-
sharing agreement was made with the school.
As a part of the agreement, the school made
some needed improvements and repairs to the
building. As part of the school’s building
project, the Scout Hut will be replaced by a
two story school building and the Troop will
have dedicated meeting and storage facilities
in part of one of the other buildings to be
built by the school. We will be sorry to see over
60 years of tradition come to an end, but the
troop looks forward to having new facilities in
a few years.
The 17th Annual Christmas Tree Lot
The Tree-Lot Committee has come up with a plan to
save our tree lot. Since the tree lot is only successful
with the help of our volunteers, we are directing our
focus now on outreach to our own congregation.
We want the tree lot to be a place where everyone can
enjoy fellowship with one another and share the spirit
of Christmas Season with our local community.
The tree lot will now run Friday - Sunday only.
Hours TBA
What we need from you:
1. Sign up to be a greeter or a tree handler
2. Sign up to work the lot for 6 hours total for the
season. If you are able, volunteer a few hours on set
up and/or tree delivery day.
You can sign up for 6 hours straight or two-3 hour
shifts or three-2 hour shifts. The goals are to not burn
anyone out and to savor the Christmas Spirit!
Whatever time you can spare would be appreciated.
Many hands make light work and joyful fellowship!

We also need folks to help with set up and unloading
the ïŹrst shipment of trees. We are all in this together!

UMCOR and GlobalMedic Provide Food
Packages for Syrian Refugees
Arriving by Sea
You may be wondering if the UMC is doing
anything about the refugees ïŹ‚eeing Syria,
Afghanistan and Iraq. This is an example of how
our church is helping.
Greece is about a thousand miles from Syria. By
early October 2015, some 400,000 refugees
traveling by sea had reached its shores, according to
the United Nations’ refugee agency. Most of them
are from Syria (70%), followed by Afghanistan
(18%) and Iraq (4%), all ïŹ‚eeing armed conïŹ‚icts.
While reception centers have been set up, living
conditions for new arrivals are dire, with severe
overcrowding creating a poor state of hygiene.
Many families sleep outdoors in public spaces or in
abandoned buildings without electricity or running
water. And accompanying these inadequate
physical conditions, there also has been a serious
shortage of food.
UMCOR, the United Methodist Committee on
Relief, is working with partner GlobalMedic to help
alleviate refugees’ suffering on the Greek islands of
Kos and Lesbos. Altogether, UMCOR has provided
more than $2.2 million in refugee aid for people
ïŹ‚eeing Syria and Iraq.
“Our work in Greece is all about the concept of
‘safe passage,’” said the Rev. Jack Amick, assistant
general secretary for UMCOR International
Disaster Response. “As long as the Greek
government allows people to land,” he continued,
“we want to make sure that they are nourished and
safe, even as they continue to move forward on their
route.” To ensure this, UMCOR is providing food
packages. The direct provision of food, rather than
offering vouchers so people can buy food locally,
acknowledges the refugees’ transient status.
Grants will assist communities in Oklahoma,
Texas, & Maryland
UMCOR is also aiding communities in the U.S. which have
been devastated by natural disasters. The board of directors
of the UMCOR approved $1.4 million to assist
communities in Oklahoma, Texas, and Maryland whose
moments in the headlines because of disaster have long
faded, but whose recovery is far from over. “Sometimes it’s
the invisible disasters that really require the greatest
funding,” said Greg Forrester, head of UMCOR U.S.
Disaster Response. “They come into the news and go out of
the news quickly. But for the families affected, the impact
lasts a lot longer than the news cycle.”
Families in Oklahoma and Texas are still feeling the impact
of tornadoes, torrential rain, straight-line winds, and
massive ïŹ‚ooding that tore across both states last spring. Rain
fell steadily for weeks, causing rivers to overïŹ‚ow their banks
and ïŹ‚ood the homes of thousands, notably those who could
least afford it.
Across Texas, more than 40,000 households applied for
Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)
assistance. The Texas Annual Conference disaster response
team has identiïŹed 300 households with unmet needs within
its geographical area, which includes Houston. In
Oklahoma, 66 of 77 counties were impacted, and nearly
11,000 households registered with FEMA. The ïŹ‚ooding
came just as the Oklahoma Annual Conference disaster
response team was concluding its long-term recovery work
in Moore, which had been leveled by tornadoes in 2013.
The UMCOR grants will support the efforts of the
Oklahoma and Texas conferences in their long-term
recovery efforts, including case management, construction
management, and volunteer management.
CrisïŹeld, MD was one of the towns hardest hit by Super
Storm Sandy in 2012. Sandy put 4-1/2 feet of water on
Main Street and affected almost all 2,600 of the residents.
Nearly three years later, reconstruction and repair are
ïŹnished, thanks to a collaborative and ecumenical effort.
But early on, while assessing damages, the disaster response
team found numerous homes that had been in decline long
before Sandy; unless they were repaired, they would not
withstand another hurricane, even a much smaller one. “We
still had Sandy funds, so we were able to make a grant to the
Peninsula-Delaware Conference to work on this mitigation
project,” Forrester said. It will take about three years to
complete.
GIVING TUESDAY
By Lynn Yoshizumi
On Dec. 1, United Methodists will come together for the 3rd year to support the work of Advance project
and missionaries on UMC #Giving Tuesday. Sponsored by the General Board of Global Ministries,
individuals, churches and annual conferences combine Advent and Christmas seasonal giving with global
mission and outreach opportunities. The theme for the 2015 campaign is "Activate Love. Transform Lives.
Change the World".
Momentum has been building for several years as more people are aware of the day and what it means.
UMC #GivingTuesday provides the opportunity on one day to intentionally build missional relationships.
GBGM Directors approved allocating matching funds dollar for dollar up to the ïŹrst $1 million in gifts to
Advance projects received online on Dec. 1, 2015, between 12:00 a.m. and 11:59 p.m. Central Time. To
stretch the matching funds, a maximum of $2,500 per individual gift to a project will be dispersed as
matching funds and a project may receive a maximum of $25,000 in matching funds.
The board president, Bishop Hope Morgan Ward (NC) explained the impact of encouraging one day of
giving: “While people can and do give through The Advance all year, concentrating efforts on this day
shines light on United Methodist ministries throughout the world and evokes extravagant giving.” In 2014,
more than $2.5 million was donated online to mission and ministries through The Advance on UMC
#GivingTuesday. More than 770 projects and missionaries received more than 8,700 gifts. The response
was global with donors from 25 countries giving generously.

Because of the success of UMC #GivingTuesday, the UMC has become a model for other organizations
wanting to participate in the larger #GivingTuesday campaign. Global Ministries was among the partners
invited to the White House by the OfïŹce of Social Innovation and Civic Partnership last year. And an
article in USA Today highlighted The UMC among the signiïŹcant participants, reporting, “Big names —
Microsoft to United Methodist General Board of Global Ministries and PayPal — got involved this year
with promises to match donations.”
The book covers the following topics:  awareness; the Bible and disabilities; labels and etiquette; deaf culture;
hard of hearing and late-deafened; vision loss; mobility challenges; cognitive/intellectual/developmental
disabilities; mental health; family issues and long-term support; veterans with disabilities, and the ordained
ministry.
“The intent of this book is to build awareness in the church regarding issues around disability, to call the
church to provide full accessibility to services and opportunities, and to promote advocacy for justice for
people with disabilities.” If this is a subject that you are interested in, please check this book out. It is a fast,
easy read, and will be available in our church library. Through the month of November, it will be displayed
on the piano.
There is also a wealth of information about disabilities, especially hidden disabilities, at the website of the
Disability Ministries Committee of the UMC, www.umdisabilityministries.org.

Most lay persons do not spend a great deal of time thinking about their ministry.  They
leave what they consider ministry to clergy.  After all clergy are set aside for Ordination by
local congregations.  Clergy are educated at ïŹne graduate theological schools, examined
and credentialed by Boards of Ordained Ministry and ordained by Bishops at Annual
Conferences.  However, it would be a huge mistake to underestimate the Ministry of the
Laity.  In the sixteenth century Martin Luther turned the religious world on its ear when,
while leading the Protestant Reformation, he announced the order of “The Priesthood of
All Believers.”  By this he meant that all who believed by virtue of their faith had a holy
obligation to act in ministry.  What he declared in fairly clear terms was the future of the
Church, in terms of community and institution, belonged not to the sanctiïŹed in the
pulpits, but to the saints in the pews.
In the past twenty years or so, experts in congregational development looking over
statistical data regarding church growth have begun to notice Pastors do not necessarily
make churches grow.  While it would be too simple to say pastoral leadership has nothing
to do with church growth, there is a more powerful singular element.  This would be the
congregation.  The numbers show that more than eighty percent of the time people come
to a house of worship because they have been invited.  Of course, some come because
they see something in terms of advertisement or outreach in the newspaper or on
television. More importantly, people stay with a congregation and get involved because
they feel a sense of invitation, to be involved and ïŹnd a way to express their gifts in
ministry.
You will notice that brilliant preaching, programs, or outstanding music were not the
primary draws.  A theology of hospitality, along with a caring and nurturing atmosphere
are the most powerful elements necessary for a dynamic congregation.  My mentor in
early ministry had a favorite saying regarding the primary relationship between lay
persons and clergy.   “The primary task between a pastor and a congregation is to be
partners in the gospel.”   This simple phrase has served me well and blessed me
enormously.
ReïŹ‚ections are part of the weekly bulletin inserts for worship. This writing is originally from October 11, 2009.
Dr. McDonald’s sermon, “Does God Really Care?” was based on Psalm 22:1-11, 17-18.

Good News Nov 2015

  • 1. First United Methodist Church of North Hollywood GOOD NEWS e-mail: nohofumc@pacbell.net NOVEMBER 2015 facebook.com/nohofumc1 www.nohofumc.com IN THIS ISSUE: ‱ 17th Annual Treelot ‱ UMW Holiday Boutique ‱ Mid-Week Tea Fellowship ‱ Community Day ‱ Boy Scouts 75th A NOTE FROM PASTOR JOEY Under the guise of scholarship thoughtful individuals seek to know and explain the mysteries of life.  Therefore, we know the why of rainbows involve ambient moisture and refracted light.  Moreover, the Biblical concept becomes interesting upon ïŹnding the creation story is tied to a tradition ïŹve thousand years old and the earth is several billion years old.   How then do we reconcile a six day creation?  Matthew, Mark, and Luke are called the Synoptic Gospels because in tone, text, and tenor they have much in common.   The Gospel of John however stands apart.  John offers no birth narrative or manger scene. The Jesus in this Gospel is said to have been with God at creation.  John uses imagery to describe Jesus.  We are told Jesus is Word, Flesh, and Light.  John shares the power of Jesus’ ministry in teaching and through miracles, but especially in the stories of healing.  Without equivocation or regard to status Jesus heals.   Insider or outcast it makes no difference. The Sabbath or not, John tells us Jesus has no concern about convention, his care is for the hearts and souls of the people. In Chapter 11:1-45 Jesus is called to heal his friend Lazarus of Bethany.  He is the brother of Mary and Martha and they have sent word of need. Yet before Jesus arrives Lazarus dies.  Mary and Martha alternate between chastising Jesus for coming too late to heal their brother, and celebrating what they assume is the ïŹnal resurrection when Jesus tells them Lazarus will be raised. The power of the story is found ïŹrst in the depth of emotion Jesus shows when told of the death of his friend.  Scholars can discern this because the word used for those who weep with Mary in verse 32, and the word used for Jesus weeping in verse 35 are different.  The ïŹrst having to do with a public kind of expression the second having to do with personal sorrow.  Secondly, the true power of this passage is seen not in the raising of Lazarus, but in the expectation Jesus shares and John records.  Jesus expects believers to ïŹnd life in him, and to share that life with others.  The love of God intends for us to be engaged in a life that begets a loving creation.    So do things need to be explained?  As a young man an incident happened that caused me to think I needed to explain it in detail to some people close to me.  I sought the advice of my dad and he said never explain yourself to those who care about you because they don’t need it, and those who don’t care about you have already made up their mind.  Speaking of my dad, he loved rainbows; as a child when I asked him where they came from, he said the Bible.  They are a visual promise of God’s presence with us.  It should come as no mystery that each and every time I see a rainbow, my father, though dead since 1985, is very much alive in my heart.  Your Friend and Pastor, Joey GOOD NEWS is published monthly by First United Methodist Church of North Hollywood, California 91601 Phone (818) 763-8231 Minerva Carcaño Bishop Rev. The traditional BBQ beef sandwich lunch will be served between 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM. On Monday, November 9th at 9:30 am, the ladies will be cooking in the social hall kitchen and setting up tables on Friday, November 13th at 9:30 am in the Social Hall. Please let Kathi Ellis know if you can help. Please mark your calendars and support the mission work of The United Methodist Women! Discovery Arts have found that children who are in the hospital really enjoy playing dress up. Halloween costumes are a perfect way for them to rise above their illness to become a Pretty Pretty Princess or their favorite Superhero. Just imagine a really sick child and seeing their face light up when we present them with their very own costume, that they get to keep. We've seen miracle smiles, again and again, as a really sick child transforms themselves and transcends their circumstances. This is very important during treatment and it makes a big difference for children who are in the hospital. Due to health concerns we can only accept new costumes. Consider purchasing a few costumes, on sale, after Halloween. Please drop off costumes in the church ofïŹce. Happy Halloween! Costume Drive for Discovery Arts!

If you write a check, please write Malaria or INM on the memo line. If you donate cash, please put it in an envelope and write Malaria or INM on the outside. • 7. By Jim Doggett When the church moved to its present location on Tujunga Avenue, it was necessary to provide a meeting place for Troop 18 to meet. It was decided to build a dedicated meeting place and the Orrills, together with other craftsmen from the church built what has become known as the “Scout Hut.” It was originally located on the east side of the back patio with the front door facing Bakman Avenue and with a barbecue pit built on the patio side. When a new building was built on that location for the youth department, the Scout Hut was rotated 90 degrees and moved to its present location. Over the years, the building has been used not only for troop activities, but also for meetings of Cub Pack 18 and Explorer Post 18, for Girl Scout unit meetings, and for Boy Scout District and Council committee meetings and training events. One summer it was used as the location for a Cub Scout Day Camp. When Wesley School needed additional classroom space a few years ago, a space- sharing agreement was made with the school. As a part of the agreement, the school made some needed improvements and repairs to the building. As part of the school’s building project, the Scout Hut will be replaced by a two story school building and the Troop will have dedicated meeting and storage facilities in part of one of the other buildings to be built by the school. We will be sorry to see over 60 years of tradition come to an end, but the troop looks forward to having new facilities in a few years. The 17th Annual Christmas Tree Lot The Tree-Lot Committee has come up with a plan to save our tree lot. Since the tree lot is only successful with the help of our volunteers, we are directing our focus now on outreach to our own congregation. We want the tree lot to be a place where everyone can enjoy fellowship with one another and share the spirit of Christmas Season with our local community. The tree lot will now run Friday - Sunday only. Hours TBA What we need from you: 1. Sign up to be a greeter or a tree handler 2. Sign up to work the lot for 6 hours total for the season. If you are able, volunteer a few hours on set up and/or tree delivery day. You can sign up for 6 hours straight or two-3 hour shifts or three-2 hour shifts. The goals are to not burn anyone out and to savor the Christmas Spirit! Whatever time you can spare would be appreciated. Many hands make light work and joyful fellowship!   We also need folks to help with set up and unloading the ïŹrst shipment of trees. We are all in this together! Tree Lot Set Up Day Saturday, November 21st 9:00 AM Meet in front of the Lounge Tree Delivery Day Saturday, November 28th Time: TBD Grand Opening Day Sunday, November 29th 12:00 PM - 9:00 PM
  • 8. UMCOR and GlobalMedic Provide Food Packages for Syrian Refugees Arriving by Sea You may be wondering if the UMC is doing anything about the refugees ïŹ‚eeing Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq. This is an example of how our church is helping. Greece is about a thousand miles from Syria. By early October 2015, some 400,000 refugees traveling by sea had reached its shores, according to the United Nations’ refugee agency. Most of them are from Syria (70%), followed by Afghanistan (18%) and Iraq (4%), all ïŹ‚eeing armed conïŹ‚icts. While reception centers have been set up, living conditions for new arrivals are dire, with severe overcrowding creating a poor state of hygiene. Many families sleep outdoors in public spaces or in abandoned buildings without electricity or running water. And accompanying these inadequate physical conditions, there also has been a serious shortage of food. UMCOR, the United Methodist Committee on Relief, is working with partner GlobalMedic to help alleviate refugees’ suffering on the Greek islands of Kos and Lesbos. Altogether, UMCOR has provided more than $2.2 million in refugee aid for people ïŹ‚eeing Syria and Iraq. “Our work in Greece is all about the concept of ‘safe passage,’” said the Rev. Jack Amick, assistant general secretary for UMCOR International Disaster Response. “As long as the Greek government allows people to land,” he continued, “we want to make sure that they are nourished and safe, even as they continue to move forward on their route.” To ensure this, UMCOR is providing food packages. The direct provision of food, rather than offering vouchers so people can buy food locally, acknowledges the refugees’ transient status. Grants will assist communities in Oklahoma, Texas, & Maryland UMCOR is also aiding communities in the U.S. which have been devastated by natural disasters. The board of directors of the UMCOR approved $1.4 million to assist communities in Oklahoma, Texas, and Maryland whose moments in the headlines because of disaster have long faded, but whose recovery is far from over. “Sometimes it’s the invisible disasters that really require the greatest funding,” said Greg Forrester, head of UMCOR U.S. Disaster Response. “They come into the news and go out of the news quickly. But for the families affected, the impact lasts a lot longer than the news cycle.” Families in Oklahoma and Texas are still feeling the impact of tornadoes, torrential rain, straight-line winds, and massive ïŹ‚ooding that tore across both states last spring. Rain fell steadily for weeks, causing rivers to overïŹ‚ow their banks and ïŹ‚ood the homes of thousands, notably those who could least afford it. Across Texas, more than 40,000 households applied for Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) assistance. The Texas Annual Conference disaster response team has identiïŹed 300 households with unmet needs within its geographical area, which includes Houston. In Oklahoma, 66 of 77 counties were impacted, and nearly 11,000 households registered with FEMA. The ïŹ‚ooding came just as the Oklahoma Annual Conference disaster response team was concluding its long-term recovery work in Moore, which had been leveled by tornadoes in 2013. The UMCOR grants will support the efforts of the Oklahoma and Texas conferences in their long-term recovery efforts, including case management, construction management, and volunteer management. CrisïŹeld, MD was one of the towns hardest hit by Super Storm Sandy in 2012. Sandy put 4-1/2 feet of water on Main Street and affected almost all 2,600 of the residents. Nearly three years later, reconstruction and repair are ïŹnished, thanks to a collaborative and ecumenical effort. But early on, while assessing damages, the disaster response team found numerous homes that had been in decline long before Sandy; unless they were repaired, they would not withstand another hurricane, even a much smaller one. “We still had Sandy funds, so we were able to make a grant to the Peninsula-Delaware Conference to work on this mitigation project,” Forrester said. It will take about three years to complete.
  • 9. GIVING TUESDAY By Lynn Yoshizumi On Dec. 1, United Methodists will come together for the 3rd year to support the work of Advance project and missionaries on UMC #Giving Tuesday. Sponsored by the General Board of Global Ministries, individuals, churches and annual conferences combine Advent and Christmas seasonal giving with global mission and outreach opportunities. The theme for the 2015 campaign is "Activate Love. Transform Lives. Change the World".  Momentum has been building for several years as more people are aware of the day and what it means. UMC #GivingTuesday provides the opportunity on one day to intentionally build missional relationships. GBGM Directors approved allocating matching funds dollar for dollar up to the ïŹrst $1 million in gifts to Advance projects received online on Dec. 1, 2015, between 12:00 a.m. and 11:59 p.m. Central Time. To stretch the matching funds, a maximum of $2,500 per individual gift to a project will be dispersed as matching funds and a project may receive a maximum of $25,000 in matching funds. The board president, Bishop Hope Morgan Ward (NC) explained the impact of encouraging one day of giving: “While people can and do give through The Advance all year, concentrating efforts on this day shines light on United Methodist ministries throughout the world and evokes extravagant giving.” In 2014, more than $2.5 million was donated online to mission and ministries through The Advance on UMC #GivingTuesday. More than 770 projects and missionaries received more than 8,700 gifts. The response was global with donors from 25 countries giving generously.   Because of the success of UMC #GivingTuesday, the UMC has become a model for other organizations wanting to participate in the larger #GivingTuesday campaign. Global Ministries was among the partners invited to the White House by the OfïŹce of Social Innovation and Civic Partnership last year. And an article in USA Today highlighted The UMC among the signiïŹcant participants, reporting, “Big names — Microsoft to United Methodist General Board of Global Ministries and PayPal — got involved this year with promises to match donations.” The book covers the following topics:  awareness; the Bible and disabilities; labels and etiquette; deaf culture; hard of hearing and late-deafened; vision loss; mobility challenges; cognitive/intellectual/developmental disabilities; mental health; family issues and long-term support; veterans with disabilities, and the ordained ministry. “The intent of this book is to build awareness in the church regarding issues around disability, to call the church to provide full accessibility to services and opportunities, and to promote advocacy for justice for people with disabilities.” If this is a subject that you are interested in, please check this book out. It is a fast, easy read, and will be available in our church library. Through the month of November, it will be displayed on the piano. There is also a wealth of information about disabilities, especially hidden disabilities, at the website of the Disability Ministries Committee of the UMC, www.umdisabilityministries.org. The Church and People With Disabilities:  Awareness, Accessibility, and Advocacy by Peggy A. Johnson.  Jodi Smith and Kathi Ellis attended the 2014 UMW Mission University in which this book and topics were shared and discussed. Bishop Peggy A. Johnson is with The United Methodist Church in Valley Forge, Pennsylvania.

  • 11. ReïŹ‚ections ! Joey K. "Donald Most lay persons do not spend a great deal of time thinking about their ministry.  They leave what they consider ministry to clergy.  After all clergy are set aside for Ordination by local congregations.  Clergy are educated at ïŹne graduate theological schools, examined and credentialed by Boards of Ordained Ministry and ordained by Bishops at Annual Conferences.  However, it would be a huge mistake to underestimate the Ministry of the Laity.  In the sixteenth century Martin Luther turned the religious world on its ear when, while leading the Protestant Reformation, he announced the order of “The Priesthood of All Believers.”  By this he meant that all who believed by virtue of their faith had a holy obligation to act in ministry.  What he declared in fairly clear terms was the future of the Church, in terms of community and institution, belonged not to the sanctiïŹed in the pulpits, but to the saints in the pews. In the past twenty years or so, experts in congregational development looking over statistical data regarding church growth have begun to notice Pastors do not necessarily make churches grow.  While it would be too simple to say pastoral leadership has nothing to do with church growth, there is a more powerful singular element.  This would be the congregation.  The numbers show that more than eighty percent of the time people come to a house of worship because they have been invited.  Of course, some come because they see something in terms of advertisement or outreach in the newspaper or on television. More importantly, people stay with a congregation and get involved because they feel a sense of invitation, to be involved and ïŹnd a way to express their gifts in ministry. You will notice that brilliant preaching, programs, or outstanding music were not the primary draws.  A theology of hospitality, along with a caring and nurturing atmosphere are the most powerful elements necessary for a dynamic congregation.  My mentor in early ministry had a favorite saying regarding the primary relationship between lay persons and clergy.   “The primary task between a pastor and a congregation is to be partners in the gospel.”   This simple phrase has served me well and blessed me enormously.  ReïŹ‚ections are part of the weekly bulletin inserts for worship. This writing is originally from October 11, 2009. Dr. McDonald’s sermon, “Does God Really Care?” was based on Psalm 22:1-11, 17-18.
