Today the world faces serious challenges—such as responsibly meeting the needs of a fast-growing population, addressing the effects of climate change, advancing global health solutions, and improving literacy and economic stability. But it’s also a time of unprecedented possibility, creativity, and innovation. As one of the world’s largest technology companies, with operations in more than 170 countries, we are in a unique position to solve environmental and social challenges by uniting the power of people and technology. At HP, we improve lives and business every day by focusing the collective power of our people, portfolio, and partnerships where we can have the greatest impact—environment, health, education, and community.
HP Catalyst is an international network of educators exploring the future of STEMx education The STEMx acronym represents key 21st century disciplines such as science, technology, engineering, math … and x = the 20+ missing letters in the acronym, like computer science and key 21st century skills like communication and “global fluency”
The original HP Catalyst network extends across 56 funded organizations in 15 countries.Their projects have impacted at least 130,000 students in grades 6-16 (lower secondary to undergraduate tertiary level education)
So while the HP Catalyst Initiative has been successful in being a “catalyst” for innovations in education, the challenge of “scale” remain. The demand for high quality STEMx teachers is outpacing the existing teacher training systems, and teachers remain a critical factor in scaling innovations._____________________________________US Data Examples:“In K-12 education, those who teach science, technology, engineering and math subjects (often called STEM teachers) should see the greatest demand. Estimated job growth through 2018: 13% (K-12 teachers), 15% (adult 23% (instructional technology professionals)…” From “5 Great Jobs Likely to Remain in Demand through 2018”, US News & World Report 2012 http://www.usnewsuniversitydirectory.com/articles/5-great-jobs-likely-to-remain-in-demand-through-20_12081.aspx#.UWb5TbVeZ8EWhitehouse 100Kin10 http://www.100kin10.org/US: Only 52 percent of high school mathematics teachers and 61 percent of high school science teachers hold a major in the disciplines they teach, according to a February 2013 report from Horizon Research
The HP Catalyst Academy is a professional learning network for teachers and faculty who are working with students in grades 6 (lower secondary) up to the undergraduate tertiary level. It’s a new approach that fills gap left by existing models of “professional development” by offering a variety of online mini-courses from a network of host organizations – and it provides a new type of professional recognition through digital badges.
To do this, are working with our key partners at the New Media Consortium and the International Society for Technology in Education…
Educators who subscribe to the HP Catalyst Academy will be referred out to qualified organizations offering specialized online learning opportunities; the online mini-courses or workshops will be hosted by a variety of organizations on a variety of platforms.
…and there will also be a variety of topics. The first 15 mini-courses include topics such as digital fabrication, social media for STEMx, how to Flip your STEMX classroom, environmental science in action, and more! The first mini-courses are planned to be available starting June 2013.
