14. Notable faculty and alumni As of 2007, 21 alumni and faculty members are Nobel laureates and 20 have won a Pulitzer Prize . In particular, John Bardeen is the only person to have won two Nobel prizes in physics , having done so in 1956 and 1972 while on faculty at the University of Illinois. In 2003, two faculty members won Nobel prizes in different disciplines: Paul C. Lauterbur for physiology or medicine , and Anthony Leggett for physics . Most recently, in 2007, Don Wuebbles, Atul Jain, John Walsh and Michael Schlesinger, professors in the Department of Atmospheric Science, were awarded a share of the Nobel Peace Prize for their contributions and collaboration with the IPCC.

Notable faculty and alumni Alumni have created companies and products such as Netscape Communications, AMD, PayPal , Playboy , National Football League, Siebel Systems, Mortal Kombat , CDW, YouTube , THX, Oracle, Lotus, Mosaic, Safari, Firefox , W. W. Grainger, Delta Air Lines, BET, and Tesla Motors. Alumni and faculty have invented the LED , JavaScript , the integrated circuit, the quantum well laser, the transistor, MRI, and the plasma screen , and are responsible for the structural design of such buildings as the Willis Tower, the John Hancock Center, and the Burj Khalifa.
18. K-12 School Librarianship The program allows you to meet the requirements for the master of science (M.S) in library and information science. Also pursuing the courses and training needed for certification as a " Library Information Specialist " in the state of Illinois.

Master of Science Degree Courseload and limits The master's degree program requires 40 hours of graduate study, including two core courses: LIS 501: Information Organization and Access LIS 502: Libraries, Information, and Society. Additionally, each semester, students pursue electives from a broad range of LIS course offerings.
21. Master of Science Degree Grades The Graduate College requires students to maintain a minimum G.P.A. Of 2.75. (0-5) Curriculum Only six of the 40 hours are required , students can choose from a wide range of elective courses to complete the remaining 34 hours.

Admission Requirements In addition to providing copies of official transcripts and letters of reference, applicants are asked to write two essays, which are examined by the admissions committee for both content and writing ability . In addition, GRE scores are required if the applicant's grade point average was below 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale ) in the last two years of undergraduate course work.

Admission Requirements - Especific International applicants whose native language is not English must submit evidence of having passed the Test of English as a Foreign Language ( TOEFL ) with a score of 620 or higher (or 260 or higher for the computer-administered version; 104 or higher [at least a 25 in each section] for the IBT). (The Intensive English Institute exam may be substituted with a score indicating comparable English proficiency.) The IELTS test is also accepted with a minimum score of 7 in each section. The GSLIS TOEFL code is 90.

PhD - OVERVIEW The program seeks outstanding students who have demonstrated t he necessary educational background, professional experience, scholarly potential and keen interest to conduct independent and exemplary research in the LIS field. Applicants who can demonstrate the intellectual capacity, leadership, communication and analytical skills, potential to contribute significantly to research and education in LIS, and the enthusiasm to do so at the highest levels are welcome to apply to this doctoral program. The admissions committee, known as the Doctoral Studies Committee (DSC), also considers the fit between an applicant's research interests and the research directions supported by the School.

28. Certificate of Advanced Study (C.A.S.) The Certificate of Advanced Study (C.A.S.) in Library and Information Science is open to those who hold a master's degree in library and information science. Librarians, information scientists, and others in information management enroll in the program to refresh and update their skills , gain greater specialization in their professional training, or redirect their careers from one area to another.
