Background of the study

1. The need to ‘produce’ more qualified
   graduates
   - competent in their field of study
  - able to use English to communicate
  - capable to compete at today’s job market
Background of the study

2. The need to overcome students’ problem
   in speaking class
  - students are not able to use English
  - various background and levels of English
  - the number of students in one class
  - tight schedule and limited class time
Underlying theory
• Byrne (1986)
  oral communication is a process involving
  both speakers and listeners, as well as
  productive skills and receptive skills.
• Revel (1979)
  meaning can be obtained not only from
  language but also from non-linguistic
               features
Underlying theory

• Byrne (1986), Nunan (1989), Klepper
  (2003) :
  Teachers must motivate their students to
  ‘make use of the little they know’

1. Clear time division: lectures and practices
2. Split the class: 3 classes according to
   students’ English level
3. Time allocation: 50’ lectures, 150’
   practical activities
4. Students choose a topic on 2nd meeting

2. Clear grading:
   presentation                       40%
   midtest, final test,class activity 20% each
7. On-going activities: presentation and
   questionnaire

• Presentation is preferable and serves as a
  useful activity in speaking class, especially
  when oral communication is aimed.
