Part of Open Knowledge, a worldwide non-profit network of
people passionate about openness and technology.
Open data: Data that can be freely used, re-used and
redistributed by anyone - subject only, at most, to the
requirement to attribute and sharealike.
We envision a world where:
• knowledge creates power for the many, not the few.
• data frees us to make informed choices about how we live,
what we buy and who gets our vote.
• information and insights are accessible – and apparent – to
everyone.

Denmark ranks third in the global open data index 2015, which ranks the current state of open data globally.
In Denmark large amounts of public data are open and available in good quality, some (but clearly not all) public data are released openly.
In Denmark we have a challenge in getting available open data used more – to benefit citizens, organizations, companies and society as a whole.
Smart cities as well as most other open data projects seen in Denmark these years aims at creating a more efficient public sector and second to foster economic growth.
Examples: smart trash bins, parking systems, traffic regulation, police monitoring of numberplates (how about facial recognition?)

“Wheelmapis a map for finding wheelchair accessible places. The map workssimiliarto Wikipedia: anyone can contribute and mark public places around the world according to their wheelchair accessibility. The criteria for marking places is based on a simple traffic light system”

Better Reykjavik, developed by the non–profit Citizens Foundation in Reykjavik, Iceland. It allows citizens to propose, debate and vote on ideas for improving the city and its services. Each month the city council debates the 10 to 15 most popular ideas. Between 2012 and 2014 almost 60 per cent of citizens were estimated to have used Better Reykjavik, and the city spent €1.9 million developing more than 200 projects based on citizen ideas, source NESTA-report https://www.nesta.org.uk/sites/default/files/rethinking_smart_cities_from_the_ground_up_2015.pdf

Technology is not always neutral. Have this in mind.

Smart solutions shouldleave us in complete control of the situation and seek to enhance our decision-making by empowering and providing more information. (see fx http://www.wsj.com/articles/SB10001424127887324503204578318462215991802)
