2. Perspectives
We teach from three perspectives:
ď Bible
ď Inspiration
ď Good Science
3. Sickness and Disease are caused from
one of 3 reasons
⢠For the glory of God
⢠Violation of natural laws
⢠Violation of spiritual laws
4. Perspectives
⢠Health is Spiritual
⢠Numbers 12
⢠Spiritual things are SPIRITUALLY
discerned
5. ⌠the curse causeless shall not come.
(Proverbs 26.2 part b)
Disease never comes without a cause.
(PATH 74/ MH 94)
6. Disease Definition
Disease is an effort of nature to
free the system from conditions
that result from the violation of
the laws of health (PATH p. 37)
7. The first thing to be done is to ascertain the
true character of the sickness and then go
to work intelligently to remove the cause.
If the harmonious working of the system
has become unbalanced by overwork,
overeating or other irregularities do not
endeavor to adjust the difficulties by
adding a burden of poisonous medicines.
(PATH p. 74 / MH p. 94)
8. 1. In the case of sickness, the cause should
be ascertained
2. unhealthful conditions should be
changed,
3. wrong habits corrected
then nature is to be assisted in her effort to
expel impurities and to re-establish right
conditions in the system. (MH p. 44)
10. By the year 2020 Depression
will be the 2nd largest killer
after Cardiovascular Disease.
11. What is Depression?
It's natural to feel down sometimes, but if that
low mood lingers day after day, it could signal
depression. Major depression is an episode of
sadness or apathy along with other symptoms
that lasts at least two consecutive weeks and is
severe enough to interrupt daily activities.
12. PET scan revealing "hot spots" of increased activity in the brain of a non-depressed person.
13. Common Causes of Depression
⢠A prominent theory is altered brain structure and
chemical function. Chemicals called neurotransmitters
become unbalanced. What pushes these chemicals off
course? One possibility is the stress of a traumatic event,
such as losing a loved one or a job. Other triggers could
include:
⢠Biology
⢠Genetics
⢠Gender
⢠Age
⢠Health conditions
⢠Trauma and grief
⢠Changes and stressful events
⢠Medications and substances
25. Diagnosis
⢠If you are experiencing 5 or more of these
classical signs, psychologist would say you are
experiencing major depression
⢠If less than 5, you would be told it is a mild
form of depression
26. ⢠Males reflect depression in the form of
irritation or anger
⢠Females show sadness and tiredness
⢠Females suffer more from depression because
of hormonal issues, the imbalance between
estrogen and progesterone e.g. emotional
depression and postpartum depression after
pregnancy
28. Depression increases the risk forâŚ
⢠Strokes
⢠Heart disease in men
⢠Death from cancer
⢠Death from pneumonia
⢠Suicide (2nd leading cause of death among
college students)
29. Diabetes
There is a link between diabetes and
depression. If depression is not addressed in
people with diabetes it may impede the
healing process with diabetes and the reverse
is also true.
30. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)
⢠If your mood matches the
season â sunny in the
summer, gloomy in the
winter â you may have a
form of depression called
seasonal affective
disorder (SAD).
⢠Place box at side of eyes
not in front
⢠Use for 30 mins per day
31. Bipolar Disorder
⢠Research has found that antidepressants are
LESS EFFECTIVE than placebos in treating
bipolar disorders
⢠Studies show that regularity does more than
medication for Bipolar disorder e.g. eating and
sleeping
33. People need to be taught that drugs do not
cure disease. It is true that they sometimes
afford present relief and the patient
appears to recover as the result of their
use; this is because nature has sufficient
vital force to expel the poison and to
correct the conditions that caused the
disease.
34. Health is recovered in spite of the drug.
But in most cases the drug only changes
the form and location of the disease. Often
the effect of the poison seems to be
overcome for a time, but the results remain
in the system and work great harm at
some later period. (PATH p. 36 / MH p/ 43)
35. Standard Treatment
⢠Medicines like Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, Celexa,
Xanax, Wellbutrin, etc.
⢠Talk Therapy
â This makes one feel
better but not actually
get better.
(Dr. Magna Parks)
36. Natural Remedies
Improving the Mind, Body and Soul for Eternity
âIt cannot be too often repeated that
whatever is taken into the stomach affects
not only the body but ultimately the mind
as wellâ . (MCP vol. 1 pg. 235)
37. Definition of Disease
Disease is an
effort of nature to free the system
from conditions that result
from the violation of
the laws of health
(PATH p. 37 / MH p. 44)
38. What are the Laws of Health?
⢠Nutrition
⢠Exercise
⢠Water
⢠Sunshine
⢠Temperance
⢠Air
⢠Rest
⢠Trust in Divine Power
39. Nutrition for Depression
⢠2-3 tbsp of ground flaxseed each morning
(keep refrigerated)
⢠Oats
⢠Lecithin
⢠Iron (teas/vinegar can deplete iron)
⢠Magnesium (bran, pumpkin seeds, almonds)
⢠St. John's Wort - can fight mild depression
40. Trytophan
⢠Tryptophan is a raw amino acid needed in order
for serotonin to be produced
⢠Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that regulates
many functions, including mood, appetite, and
sensory perception
⢠Sunlight enhances Serotonin
⢠Avocados contain fats which are important to the
nervous system
⢠Reduces need for Serotonin medication such as
Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, Celexa
42. Folates
A water soluble B Vitamin. Needed in
production of red blood cells, wound healing,
building muscles, maintenance of the nervous
system and for every function that requires cell
division. (beans, wheat germ, spinach, lettuce)
44. Carbohydrates
⢠Include the plain baked potatoes and continue
with the fruits and vegetables
⢠Oat water from rolled oats can help
depression (soak for 15-20 minutes). Oat is
stabilizing and invigorating.
46. ⢠There is no exercise that will prove as
beneficial to every part of the body as walking.
(Healthful Living (HL) p. 130.2)
⢠âŚin walking, all the muscles are brought into
action. (HR, July 1, 1872 par. 14)
47. Water and Depression
⢠Hot and cold showers (contrast shower)
â 3 mins hot, 30 secs -1min cold
â Use for 6 months then ad hoc
This raises neurochemicals in the brain (serotonin,
dopamine, norepinephrine)
⢠Drink enough water to prevent mild dehydration
48. Sunshine and Depression
⢠Resets the biological clock
⢠Problem falling asleep?
â Get sunshine in the morning at 10:00am â 2:00pm
⢠Problem staying asleep?
â Get sunshine in the evening 10:00am-2:00pm
⢠Problem with sleep?
â Get sunshine both at 10:00am - 2:00pm
49. Sunshine and Depression
⢠During the day sunlight causes serotonin
to increase and melatonin to decrease.
The brain uses serotonin to increase
alertness and it helps to create a feeling
of happiness.
⢠At nights serotonin changes to
melatonin.
50. Vitamin D and Depression
Studies have linked low levels of vitamin D to
depression among older men and women.
One possible explanation is that lack of
vitamin D causes the parathyroid gland to
produce more hormone. Low levels of vitamin
D and higher levels of parathyroid hormone
have been linked to depression severity.
53. Temperance and Depression
⢠Other things to avoid
are birth control pills,
having eating or
shopping binges,
steroids and diet pills.
⢠Over 200 medicinal
drugs are reported to
cause depression.
54. The Frontal Lobe houses our will, self-control,
how impulsive we are.
⢠Scientific research
shows decreased
blood flow activity to
the frontal lobe also
increases depression.
⢠Activities that
decrease flow to the
frontal lobe can
include activities such
asâŚ
55. TV watching
Television - alpha
waves are similar to
day dreaming,
passive and similar
to being hypnotized.
56. Loud Music
75% of high school
females 50% of males
who prefer heavy metal
music had considered
suicide, compared to
35% of girls and 15%
boys who prefer other
music. (Sheel, K.R. Westerfield
1999)
57. Classical Music
However, amazingly
researchers have
discovered that
listening to classical
music alleviates
symptoms of
depression.
58. Air and Depression
⢠Proper breathing technique:
stomach should go out with
inhalation and in with
exhalation.
⢠Keep windows open
⢠âKeeping brain cells healthy is
vital to combating mental health
issues such as depression and
anxiety, while improving overall
mental performance.â The brain
is the first to suffer when it is not
properly oxygenated.
(Amazing Health pg. 41)
59. Air and Depression
⢠Proper breathing for getting blood to brain
⢠Respiration is good for anxiety attacks
⢠The influence of pure, fresh air is to cause the
blood to circulate healthfully through the system.
It refreshes the body, and tends to render it
strong and healthy, while at the same time its
influence is decidedly felt upon the mind,
imparting a degree of composure and serenity. It
excites the appetite, and renders the digestion of
food more perfect, and induces sound, sweet
sleep.-- (T., V. I, p. 702)
60. Rest and Depression
âA balanced circadian
rhythm-maintained through
practical lifestyle habits, such
as regular sleep patterns and
consistent daily routines-helps
patients to avert new
manic or depressive episodes
longer than therapy focused
on regulating their mood
symptoms and medications.â
(Monitor on psychology 2008)
61. Rest and Depression
Two hours' good sleep
before twelve o'clock is
worth more than four
hours after twelve
o'clock. . .
(7MR 224.3)
62. Rest and Depression
The brain does the most
work during the hours of
10-12pm. It does most
releasing of hormones,
chemicals, melatonin,
growth hormones and the
brain restores itself.
63. Trust and Depression
⢠Studies shows that spirituality helps
recovery from depression.
Depression is lower among those
that have some form of intrinsic
religion. (American Journal of Psychiatry
1996)
⢠An atheist psychologist once said,
âprayer helps with depression
recovery because it focuses the
mind on things to be grateful for in
life.â (Seligman, Martin How to Change
your Mind)
64. Trust and depression
However courageous
and successful a man
may be in the
performance of a
special work, unless he
looks constantly to God
when circumstances
arise to test his faith he
will lose his courage.
RH, October 16, 1913 par. 5
65. Why does God allow trials to come to us?
God wants you to be cheerful, free, happy, and
trustful, ready to say with Paul, "Our light affliction,
which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more
exceeding and eternal weight of glory; while we look
not at the things which are seen, but at the things
which are not seen; for the things which are seen are
temporal; but the things which are not seen are
eternal."
Your trials are God's workmen; and if borne with
patience, they will prepare you for a recompense of
reward. Therefore you should be of good courage
under them. (20 MR p. 134.4)
66. You have to talk faith,
you have to live faith,
you have to act faith,
that you may have an
Increase of faith.
(Faith and Works p. 78.2)
67. May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ
be with us all.
