The group used the internet extensively for research and planning their documentary on the makeup industry. They researched topics like the influence of YouTube, makeup advertising, careers in makeup, and cruelty-free products. This research helped them develop interesting interview questions. They also found archive footage from beauty gurus and music to include. Further, the group analyzed other documentaries on YouTube and Netflix to understand conventions. Microsoft Word and Excel helped design questionnaires. Finally, the internet provided ideas for the print ad and radio trailer by researching examples.

Research and Planning
2. • The first step our group took in the development of our products was research
where we used the internet. The internet allowed me to create in depth
research about the topic of hair and resulting in my group and I coming up with
various ideas as to what we would like to include in our documentary. Initially,
we came up with the idea to section our documentary into 4 main parts which
has been split up clearly using narration; how YouTube has affected the makeup
industry, makeup advertisement, building a career in the makeup industry and
cruelty free makeup products. We found these topics to be very popular at the
moment in the makeup industry whilst researching and so we decided to focus
on these topics as it turns out people are most interested in them at the
moment. I found the internet most useful for researching about how YouTube
has affected the makeup industry because YouTube itself is on the internet and
so it was easily accessible and resulted in it showing more than we thought we
knew already.

3. • This research from the internet
enabled us to come up with interesting
questions for the interviews we
conducted as it enabled us to have a
great understanding of what people
world wide want to know about the
topic of makeup, which we aimed to
include. An example of this is, when
creating the questions that we wanted
to ask the body shop, from research
we know that all of their products are
cruelty free and so we asked ‘can you
talk about the ethical values behind
your products?’ because this topic is
very popular at the moment with
whether or not people should use
cruelty free products due to the rise of
veganism.
4. • My group and I also used the internet to find useful archive
footage for our documentary which has made the quality of
it very good, for example, when discussing the topic of how
YouTube has affected the makeup industry we were able to
include clips of beauty gurus from their videos as this best
illustrates to the audience what is being spoken about so
that they have a better understanding of it. Another type of
archive footage we were able to retract from the internet
was the music for the documentary and radio trailer which
was also very crucial for us to include as this captures the
audience's attention as they may recognise the music and it
also fills any spare audio time.
5. • I also used the internet to find documentaries to analyse to understand
the narrative and construction of what a real and professional
documentary must include. To do this I used YouTube and Netflix. This has
allowed me to understand clearly what needs to be included in my groups
documentary to make sure it follows the codes and conventions of a real
documentary.
•
Another platform my group and I used was Microsoft word/excel to
produce our questionnaires. For this we written out all of the questions
were we ask the audience feedback on all three of our products for us to
gain a well understanding of what people outside of our group this,
making it un-bias. Microsoft word/ excel helped us to do this as it helped
layout the questionnaire well by including lines for the audience to write
on, for including yes and no boxes and also for checking any spelling
mistakes.
•
A final form of research my group has gained from using the internet is for
getting ideas for the print advert and radio trailer. We did this by
researching Channel 4 print adverts on Google images and using YouTube
to find real radio trailer. As a result, this allowed us to understand what we
needed to include in the products to make them look professional and
alike the ones we found.
