A
brand new year – and what an amazing time for a bride-to-be!
First thing’s first, though, have you chosen your bridesmaids? It doesn’t matter
how many you have, a savvy support system will see you through the planning as
well as on the big day itself. And this is such an exciting stage: they’ll drink fizz and
eat cake with you at every opportunity (any excuse!), they’ll tear out magazine pages and
tag you in Instagram photos of dresses you might like. They’ll get excited about the same
things as you and be a sounding board when you need it most, not to mention organise you
a fabulous hen do… There are no hard and fast rules about who to pick, but if you’re in need
of advice, our Bridesmaids For Beginners guide on page 94 will see you through. And if
you’re looking for ways to pop the all-important question, head to page 96. I surprised mine
with chic packages from Parcel London, and needless to say, it was five firm yeses!
Finally, to help kick-start your planning, we’ve rounded up some of the
UK’s most stunning venues (starting on page 107) and, of course, taken
a look at what 2019 has to offer to make your day extra special – we’re
talking cakes, flowers, stationery, bridal fashions and more.

Bride ofthe month
KIRSTEN TOMLIN
Askham Hall, a country house in a secluded area of the Lake District, was the location for Kirsten
and Dominic’s nuptials. Held in the listed barn, it was a more personal ceremony than most, with the
bride’s old school friend (and now celebrant) conducting the service. “She also helped my husband’s
young nephews to write their reading, which got lots of laughs and quite a few tears.” Kirsten wore an
Essense of Australia gown, paired with an autumnal bouquet of dusky pink blooms and foliage.

The ultimateW-day
make-up must-haves
Top make-up artists share the products they love for a lawless big-day look
I have a huge range of foundations in my kit,
which I select according to the bride’s skin type,
but my main go-to is Bobbi Brown Long-Wear
Even Finish Foundation (£34). It has a great
colour range, photographs beautifully and is
buildable from medium to heavy coverage, without
ever looking heavy on the skin. CHRISTY WATERFALL
THE FOUNDATION
“Giorgio Armani Luminous Silk Foundation
(£42) will forever be a favourite of mine. It’s so
versatile and can be used lightly for a natural
look, or built up for heavier coverage. Either
way, it creates the most lawless skin you’ve
seen. It’s been in my kit for a while and is here
to stay.” JOSEPHINE WAY

THE PRIMER
“For me, it has to be Estée
Lauder The Illuminator
Radiant Perfecting Primer
(£27). It has a subtle
shimmer, which gives
brides a beautiful
natural radiance.”
GEMMA SUTTON
“Veil Mineral Primer by
Hourglass (£49),
is the one for me. It has
a lightweight texture that
smooths over ine lines
and pores, creating the
ideal base for make-up.
It makes a bride’s make-
up last like no other I’ve
found, plus it makes your
base totally waterproof,
which is ideal for any
big-day tears!”
JOSEPHINE WAY
“For under-eyes, I tend to use Estée
Lauder Double Wear Stay-in-Place
Flawless Wear Concealer (£24)
as it has good coverage that lasts
for hours. But if I’m covering up
any spots or blemishes, it has to be
Laura Mercier Secret Camoulage
(£27.50) followed by some setting
powder. It’s so good it means my
brides don’t
have to worry
if they get a
spot on their
wedding
morning.”
CHRISTY

THE BLUSHER
“I like to reach for my Illamasqua Powder
Blusher (£23), as there are lots of colours to suit
a range of skin tones. My favourite shade has to
be a pretty pinkish-peach called Naked Rose as
it really suits everyone.” CHRISTY WATERFALL
THE CONCEALER
Kat Von D Lock-It Cream
Concealer (£20) continues to be
one of my favourites. I originally
bought it to expand the vegan
options in my kit and I’m so
impressed. It offers full coverage
and has the power to cover dark
circles, but it doesn’t sit in ine
lines or pores. FIONA LUCY CLARK

The colour is a pink inish

its texture is heaven.”

Illamasqua Colouring Lip Pencil in Woo (£16) and
it’s been a staple in my kit ever since. A brownish-

THE MASCARA
“I’ve been through every mascara you can
possibly think of, but No7 Stay Perfect (£13), is
the best I’ve found for bridal make-up. It’s totally

proof and yet somehow is removed easily with
warm water. It’s magic!” JOSEPHINE WAY
Max Factor False Lash Effect
Waterproof Mascara (£10.99) is the one.

going to lake or run down her face if
they become teary. It’s never let me down

THE LIP COLOUR
“My favourite lipstick really depends
on the bride’s skin tone, but my top
pick over the 2018 wedding season
has been MAC Cremesheen in Peach

peachy-pink tone, which gives a soft,

50. TRENDS
50 weddingideasmag.com|FEBRUARY2019
A
lmost 20 years ago, Victoria
Beckham made plenty
of headlines when she
married David – the couple
famously perched on his-
and-hers thrones during their wedding
at Luttrellstown Castle in Ireland. Victoria
said her vows in front of a host of celebrity
guests wearing a strapless Vera Wang. Then,
later on, the couple changed into matching
purple outfits designed by Antonio Berardi.
Much was made of the Beckhams’
double outfits and in the last few months,
we have all watched in wonder as Meghan
Markle married Prince Harry in a bespoke
Givenchy gown then swapped it for a Stella
McCartney halter-neck for the evening
celebration. In October, Princess Eugenie
married Jack Brooksbank wearing custom-
made Peter Pilotto, then wore a beautiful
blush-pink Zac Posen gown later on.
It’s no secret that bridalwear takes a big
chunk out of any wedding budget – we only
spend more on venue hire and catering.
Last year, brides spent an average of £1,537
on their wedding outfit and accessories* –
up by almost £200 from the previous year –
which indicates our appetite for more than
one wedding dress is growing. Hamish
Shephard, founder of wedding planning
app Bridebook.co.uk, explains: “We’re
expecting to see yet another significant
increase in the overall spend on bridalwear
and accessories next year. Some brides who
are planning 2019 weddings are allocating
budget for up to three outfit changes!”
Let’s not forget that the Duchess of
Cambridge also embraced a two-dress
trend at her wedding to Prince William in
2011, so are brides who choose to wear two
gowns simply following a royal tradition?
“The Meghan Markle effect has played a
significant part in the popularity of evening
dresses,” Hamish admits. “It’s actually led
to further investment in multiple looks for
both brides and grooms.”
Princesses aside, it’s clear that many
brides are embracing the two-dress
trend for pragmatic reasons. Sarah, from
Gloucester, married Rob wearing a long,
sleek gown for their church ceremony
but later changed into a shorter, sparkly
number for their reception in a Cotswolds
barn. Sarah’s reasons for changing her
dress between cutting the cake and the first
dance were mainly practical: “I knew that
celebrating in a barn with a fire pit outside
meant my wedding dress would get filthy.
The long gown will always be special to me
because it’s what I wore to say my vows. But
a second dress definitely made it easier to
enjoy the party!”
One designer who has listened to his
clients is bridal and womenswear designer
Ian Stuart, star of hit Channel 4 show The
Posh Frock Shop.
Ian says, “Often our brides have heard
from other women that the evening part
of their wedding day awkward, as their
dress was too big and heavy to enjoy the
party. So, a lot of my clients are looking for
alternatives. They want to look fabulous but
also enjoy themselves.”
And Ian has designed a wedding dress
that allows his brides to do just that: “One
of our bestselling dresses, Spotlight, is two
dresses in one. It has a ball gown skirt for
the wedding ceremony, which detaches to
be a slinky dress for evening.”
Ian predicts the trend for brides
showcasing two different looks will
continue: “We’re going to see more brides
having one dress with detachable elements:
whether that’s a belt, sleeves or a skirt. I’m
hearing from lots of our brides that they
keep a hairdresser all day or book someone
to come and re-do their hair for the
evening, so they have their hair up for the
ceremony and down for the party.”
Other brides embrace a second outfit
to acknowledge other cultures – exactly
like Anna from London who married
husband Charles. Anna wore an ivory
Blue by Enzoani gown for their church
ceremony then changed into a custom-
made traditional Nigerian outfit or aso-ebi.
She explains, “We thought it was important
to pay homage to my husband’s cultural
heritage when we got married, through the
choice of attire and the food served. We
got changed after the wedding dinner, in
time for the first dance. I loved wearing my
dresses and felt heroic in both of them!”
While Anna’s first dress was bought from
a boutique then altered, she also attended
fittings and chose patterns and fabrics for
her second. She explains, “My Nigerian two-
piece felt like it evolved through more of a
process, with different fittings or shopping
trips for the various elements. I still have
both my dresses and accessories and love
them equally.”

W
e’re part of the
Instagram generation.
Every day, we scroll
through perfectly
curated pictures and are
filled with joy when someone likes ours.
Photos are a big deal for us – the style, the
quality, the composition; the list goes on.
We had to consider all these things when
we began the search for the photographer
who’d capture our big-day vision.
To start with, Harry and I are pretty
tricky clients. Beyond my usual bridezilla
demands, Harry’s a filmmaker so has
incredibly high standards. Luckily for us,
wedding photography has stepped up
over the last decade and a quick Instagram
search threw up a host of photographers
who had a certain je ne sais quoi.
Rather overwhelmed with the choice,
I turned to one of my friends who had a
list of people to recommend. Having tied
the knot recently, she was a font of bridal
knowledge. Armed with her suggestions, I
took to the web to narrow down a shortlist.
Our budget and their pricing became
the first decider. I knew this wasn’t the
time to scrimp and save, but equally, £3,000
seemed a lot when that was half the cost
of the catering. We decided to look for
someone who could shoot the whole day
for around £1,250.
Having decided on price, the list

The
Bride
Diaries
narrowed dramatically, and we were left
with five people we liked. Next stop, their
portfolios. Instagram can be a honey
trap, luring you in with the best two
photographs from a wedding that had
another 398 hideous ones. So we asked to
see a complete set of photographs from
a single wedding. If they didn’t want to
show us, we assumed it’s because they
had something to hide and they were
immediately scrapped from the list.
But only so much box ticking and
shortening shortlists can actually help.
Sometimes you just have to sit, look, and
see if you like how they take photos. We
pored over pictures and worked out that
we preferred the darker moody images
to the blown-out bright and light ones.
We liked off-the-cuff shots that captured
casual moments and quick glances, bursts
of laughter and stolen caresses. Sure, we
wanted the posed shots but for the rest we
wanted documentary-style snaps.
I let Harry take the lead on the final
decision, but we were in agreement that
Carrie Lavers had to be our photographer.
Her images just spoke to us, especially
her couple shots. They looked natural and
comfortable, and we could see ourselves
captured in the same way. And of course,
we knew they’d look good when we posted
them on Instagram to rake in those all-
important likes.
HARRY’S
HIGHLIGHTS…
I’ll be the irst to admit that I’m not big
on having a photographer. As someone
that spends their days behind the
camera, I hate the idea of being in
front of one. Having to strike mock-
romantic poses ills me with horror, so
I knew we’d need a photographer who
captured us in our natural state.
Esme thinks that the only way to
get me over my fear is to have an
engagement shoot, get comfortable
with the photographer and relax about
the whole thing. She’ll love it and I’ll
loathe it. So we’re still battling through
that debate.
Then, of course, there’s the video
debate. Again, Esme is pleading that
a video is just as important as the
photographs and that maybe I could
ask a friend to do it for mate’s rates. I’m
hoping that my camera-shy feelings
disappear on the day because it seems
like I’ll be having a lot of screen time if
Esme has her way!

fter choosing the spectacular
Warren House in Surrey as
their venue, a classic English
countryside theme proved
central to Jade and Jack’s
big day. “We loved the venue from the
start and picked it because it’s so close to
Richmond Park, where we spend a lot of
time together,” recalls Jade.
The couple kept things simple by sticking
to a pretty, yet subtle colour palette that
included blush, coral, ivory and white, with
touches of grey. These romantic shades
made for some beautiful flower displays,
including pew-end posies and table
arrangements in glass vases, and a semi-
naked wedding cake adorned with fresh
bold blooms. “The cake was delicious,”
Jade adds. “We picked our favourite
flavours – chocolate (of course!), lemon
and blueberry, and a classic Victoria sponge
with jam. Vaani at Sugar Plum Bakes was so
great at coming up with a design and the
decoration was perfect.”
The stationery also tied in with the
couple’s chic styling – Jo at Grace &
Bramble designed pink-and-grey invites
tied together with blush-coloured ribbon,
while Jade’s aunt – designer at Willow &
Walnut – created on-the-day stationery in a
similar palette, complete with some extra
touches like bathroom hampers and a
basket of flip-flops for guests.
Jade’s dress perfectly suited the mood
and style of their day: a silk crepe halter-
neck gown by Mikaella Bridal with a
plunging neckline and open back.

ith their rustic winter
wedding taking place
mid-December, Katy
and Paul were keen to
include some nods to
the festive season, with trees decked out in
fairylights, frosted pine cones and bunches
of scented eucalyptus.
“When we were looking for a venue, it
was really important to us that we could
decorate it ourselves,” Katy recalls. “Our
décor was all homemade where possible.
We used lanterns, pillar candles and white
rose petals to line the aisle, had homemade
wooden signage and in the corner of the
reception was a large Christmas tree, which
added to the festive feel.”
The couple covered as much of the barn’s
ceiling and walls with fairylights as possible.
On the tables were lit lantern centrepieces
encircled with eucalyptus wreaths and
polaroid photos of each guest. Katy had
even created the stationery herself, opting
for a watercolour leaf print on cream card,
tied with ribbon and a handwritten tag.
The bride and bridesmaids’ bouquets
also had a sophisticated wintry feel, with
cream roses, succulents, eucalyptus and
brunia berries. “In the centre of mine was
a single yellow rose, in memory of my
grandma who loved them,” Katy adds.
The couple are also keen foodies, and
Katy reveals picking a menu for 80 friends
and family was one of the more difficult
tasks. Guests ended up dining on a hearty
feast of pâté with red-onion chutney, lamb,
and lemon tart. “In the evening, our venue
offered up an outdoor pizza oven, which
everyone loved!” adds the bride.
It was function band The Confidentials
who encouraged guests up onto the
dancefloor for a night of festivities. “They
played two sets and DJ’d in between,
they were so well-received, even my dad
danced!” laughs Katy.
Also keeping guests entertained was

set the tone for a relaxed
celebration filled with Pinterest-
worthy DIY details. “It was your typical
outdoor British summer wedding – all
pastels, bunting and fairylights. I love
Pinterest: it was a great friend in the run-up
to the day!” laughs Anya.
The couple called upon the help of their
friends and family to create a homespun
wedding. The stationery was crafted by
Anya’s mum and sister using brown card
and washi tape, while Anya made the
bunting herself – all 100 metres of it.
“We had fairylights in the ceiling of the
marquee and outside in the bushes of the

complemented the relaxed décor. “We ate
it as part of the wedding breakfast, rather
than waiting until later when we knew all
the guests would be full,” says Anya. Food
was high up on the couple’s list of priorities,
with local caterers The Wild Oven serving
up an excellent menu of seasonal dishes,
including antipasti boards with wood-
fired chorizo, lamb koftas, cheese and
bread, pulled pork and chicken mains with
Mediterranean veg, couscous and fiery
rocket. For dessert it was brownies with
cream and summer fruits.
Later on, the bride and groom took to
the floor to perform a choreographed first
dance to Do You Love Me? By The Contours
– a song which Anya reveals they sing to
each other a lot at home. “My aunt’s a dance
teacher so she helped us choreograph it – it
meant we didn’t have to do an awkward
shuffle in the middle of the dancefloor.”
Anya’s dress perfectly suited the couple’s
relaxed wedding style: a backless, flowy
lace and tulle number.
“My sister lives in New York, so my mum
and I visited her there to go shopping at
L’Fay Bridal. I absolutely loved my dress – it
gave me butterflies the moment I tried it
on – and the look on their faces told me it
was the one.”
Anya finished her look with a vintage
tiara that belonged to one of Alec’s great
grandmothers, making it more than
100 years old. She also borrowed a veil
from her sister and treated herself to a
new beaded Tiffany bracelet and a pair
of earrings, which she also gifted to her
sister. Her shoes, however, were a little less
conventional. “I’m not a high-heel person,
so wore some Toms lace espadrilles!”
she laughs. “I was definitely the comfiest
woman there…”

Chaz and Ivy both grew up in
Surrey, in 2014, their careers
took them to Dubai, where they
began a new life living together
for the first time.
“We had always spoken openly to each
other about wanting to get married so we
made it official on our 11th anniversary. Yet,
despite already having booked our venue,
set the date and chosen my dress, Chaz still
managed to surprise me with a ‘proper’
proposal deep in the Arabian desert as we
captured our postcard-style save-the-date

The couple booked Farbridge in West
Sussex – a beautiful barn venue that fitted
with their autumnal theme. “The venue
exceeded our expectations in every way –
the space, the surroundings, the team…
even the chefs were incredible,” Ivy recalls.
“A lot of the props we had were readily
available and included in the hire price,
too,” she adds.
Brilliantly British dishes were at the heart
of the couple’s menu for their November
wedding. “We wanted good, hearty food
that would typically be enjoyed on a
crisp, autumnal day – sausage and mash,
fish and chips, Ploughman’s bruschetta
and butternut squash soup,” Ivy says.
“Our canapés were accompanied with
champagne, hot apple cider and pumpkin-
spiced Baileys on ice, and in the evening we
served up bacon and egg sandwiches,” she
adds. Guests could also pick from a snack
station that featured rosemary, salt and
caramel popcorn, and pumpkin apple cider
doughnuts.
The space was filled with modern-rustic
details, including stationery with copper-foil
writing, copper tableware, framed signage,
burlap runners, fairylights and wooden
place-card holders. There was also a nod
to the couple’s love of travel, with vintage
suitcases and a hand-painted globe which
doubled up as Ivy and Chaz’s guest book.
“Our florist, Caroline from Nordic Twigs,
brought my vision to life using white roses,

or this international singer-
songwriting couple (“I’m from
Liverpool and Obi is both Nigerian
and Danish”) Spain’s picturesque
Costa Brava coastline proved to
be the perfect backdrop. The idea was
to create a wedding that was personal
to them, while complementing their
Mediterranean surroundings.
“We chose a palette of rust and terracotta
shades with lots of floral motifs and
metallics,” reveals Charli. “Our blessing was
held in a 15th
century church perched on a
hilltop in the village of Madremanya. Before
travelling to Spain, we’d had an intimate
civil ceremony at home in Copenhagen
with our immediate family.” Charli’s father
played an important role in the blessing,
not only walking her down the aisle, but
singing a moving rendition of Ave Maria for
the newlyweds. “There wasn’t a dry eye in
the house!”
After the ceremony, guests were
transported to Hotel Garbí, where they
were welcomed with aperitifs and canapés
before sitting down to dine in the candlelit
gardens. “We sat at tables decorated with
fresh eucalyptus, gypsophila and roses,
and enjoyed an extensive feast of Catalan
dishes, complete with barbecued meat, fish
and seafood,” reveals Charli.
The sunset colour palette was echoed
in everything from the gold-foil stationery
to the lighting – and even the bridesmaids’
dresses. “We bought the flowers from a
local market in Palafrugell and with the
help of Kayt Wilson at our reception venue,
arranged all the tablecentres ourselves,”
recalls Charli. “For the favours, we wanted
our guests to be gifted something authentic
that they could take home as a souvenir of
Spain. Instead of traditional place cards,
their names were hand-drawn onto rustic
Spanish tiles.”
For Charli and Obi’s wedding, the
evening entertainment was always going
to be epic. After the wedding breakfast,
a DJ – one of the pair’s close friends and
colleagues – played a curated set of R&B,
Funk and Hip Hop classics. “At 1am, we

all moved on to an outdoor after-party
venue called Funky Pizza and danced the
night away until 5am. It really was the most
fun way to end an absolutely perfect day,”
Charli smiles.
The bride’s dress was ideal for dancing
in – a form-fitting style from Enzoani
which she picked up back in her home
city of Liverpool. “It had all the details I
was looking for,” recalls Charli. “Crocheted
lace, a low back, mermaid silhouette
and a lace train. I really wanted to find a
dress that would fit my personality – I’m
confident and love fashion so I wanted a
showstopper!” She kept her accessories
simple – just a pair of vintage pearl earrings
and a crystal bracelet, alongside a pair of
crystal-embellished heels from Asos.
Maid of honour and professional make-
up artist Suzanne Wells was in charge of
beautifying the girls that morning, though
Charli reveals she did her own hair.
“I’m used to doing my own hair and
make-up for shows and events, so I know
what suits me,” she says. “Ultimately my tip
would be to choose a make-up artist that
you trust – don’t panic-book a salon you’ve
never tried before.
“That said, I’d suggest face-to-face
appointments with all your suppliers
where possible, particularly when planning
a wedding abroad. Sometimes foreign
companies can be less reliable with email
correspondence and it can leave you feeling
worried and stressed. If you’re choosing not
to have a wedding planner local to the area,
try making a trip in advance to get things
set in stone.”

doesn’t want sunshine on their big day? And
there’s a shade to suit every celebration.
“From lemon sherbet to golden mustard,
yellow is such a warm, positive colour,”
says florist Joanna Rhodes of Hayford &

wedding with narcissus, hellebores and

UNDER CANVAS
Stretch tents and teepees – the classic wedding marquee’s latest
incarnations – are shaking up the venue scene. Credited with making wild
venues workable, you could hold a blessing beside a lake, then dance the
night away in a teepee on the shore, or pitch a tent in a woodland glade.
But do bear in mind that if you’re not using a country manor’s lawn, you’ll
need to ensure all amenities are provided, from the bar to bathrooms.

LoosenupAs more couples forgo the
formalities in favour of a
laidback big day, their detail
choices are doing the same.
And so tight pomanders
and all-rose bouquets are
replaced by mixed posies
and rustic wheat sheaves.
“Large, unstructured
bouquets with foliage and
trailing ribbons are big for
summer,” says florist Karen

silk ribbons for an ethereal
feel, or velvet for a more
wintry twist.
“Offering 360-degree impact, height and dreamy metallic-foil inishes, balloons

UP, UP & AWAY
Bridebook.co.uk has revealed the average cost of a wedding is
now a staggering £30,355. With the days of the bride’s parents
footing the bill often a distant memory, couples are becoming
increasingly creative with their budgets, without compromising
on the overall effect. That’s where balloons come in.
Offering 360-degree impact, height and dreamy metallic-foil
finishes, balloons are finding their way into tablecentres, venue
décor and even ceremony arches as couples seek out more
affordable alternatives to flowers.
PruneyourrideNaturally, you want to cruise into married life in style. But as
undeniably cool as vintage vehicles and classic Cadillacs are, your
guests have probably seen them all before. It’s from this desire to
do something unique that an unlikely floral trend is emerging.
“The wedding car’s now a popular area to focus florals. A car
garland looks fantastic as you arrive and depart, but remains a
feature throughout the day for photos,” reveals Karen.
Green garlands woven from eucalyptus or ruscus offer a lower-
cost but whimsical take on the style. Add roses for a fairytale
finish, or proteas or succulents for a boho vibe.
Car garlands are proving

WHITE OUT
In contrast to the colour
pop boom, Sheryl
Popplewell of Fulford
Flowers maintains that
there’s still a place for the
white wedding, particularly
when it comes to blooms.
“A trend that’s still
extremely strong for
2019 is classic white and
cream flowers. Elegant
and timeless, they create
a stunning effect in every
venue, and can be created
in wild and unstructured or
mass-filled designs.”
THE ELEMENT OF SURPRISE
From the day you announce your engagement, your wedding
is on the table for family and friends to add their 10 cents to,
whether that’s with outlandish demands, unwelcome suggestions
or guest-list gripes. It’s little surprise, then, that solemniser Sandra
Lofts has seen a huge rise in ‘surprise weddings’. Venues expert
Kelly Mortimer also adds:
“This is where guests are invited to an event such as a birthday
or engagement party and when they arrive it’s revealed that
they’re at the couple’s wedding. With so much pressure on
couples to make their wedding amazing and with an abundance
of often unwanted advice from friends and family, the surprise
wedding is a trend I adore.” What a secret to keep…
SingularstyleFollowing the Duchess of Sussex’s embellishment-free wedding
style, minimalist silhouettes are something we’ve seen dominate
2019’s bridalwear. And now, it’s taking over receptions, too. Bold,
blousy blooms are back on the scene, but not as you know them.
“Cluster glass bottles with single-headed stems to form a
centrepiece,” suggests styling expert Gemma King from The
Wedding of My Dreams.
Jam jars, milk bottles and test tubes can all be used to create
this effect. Source the vessels from eBay and charity shops,
and this look can be big on impact but gentle on your budget,
requiring far fewer flowers than a more traditional display.

Bridesmaids
for beginners
The whos, the whats and the hows – here’s how to make choosing
your ’maids a bridal breeze, says Katie Byrne
A
rguably one of the most
important decisions you
can make in the early stages
of your planning is who to
choose as your bridesmaids.
Whether you pick a single best friend
or your entire sisterhood, these are the
women who’ll offer support and sounding
boards as you prepare for your big day. For
some newly-engaged brides it’s simple, for
others, it’s decidedly less straightforward.
The good news? No matter how tricky it
might feel right now, it really is manageable.
Read on for our trouble-shooting guide for
a bride tribe maid in heaven.
What if... I have too many
people to ask?
If you have a huge group of close friends
and family members, you can’t ask all of
them to be your bridesmaids (unless you
want to go viral on Reddit, naturally).
Focus instead on the women you
couldn’t imagine doing it without – your
sister, for example, or your lifelong best
friend. There are countless other ways your
girlfriends can be included in the day; a
ceremony reading, perhaps, or a special
‘best friends’ reception dance.
What if... I don’t have anyone
to ask?
First up, ladies: there’s no rule saying you
actually need bridesmaids. That said, if you
want one or two and don’t have anyone to
ask, you could consider going pro.
“I’ve been a professional bridesmaid for
lots of women who felt they didn’t have
anyone to turn to,” explains Tiffany Wright,
founder of The Undercover Bridesmaid
(theundercoverbridesmaid.co.uk). “Not
only do I take the stress away and help
with last-minute nerves, I’m there as
an emotional support, too. A bride can
completely let her guard down and won’t
be judged.”
What if… All my closest
friends are guys?
If you’d sooner have bridesmen than
bridesmaids, follow the lead of Brazilian
bride Rebeca Sinohara (who hit headlines
in 2017 for the getting-ready bridal
photoshoot she had with her best boy
pals) and just do it. “Your wedding should
be about what you want,” says Tiffany. “If
you want a best man rather than a maid of
honour, absolutely go for it.”
What if… Someone assumes
they’re my bridesmaid?
You don’t owe anyone a place in your bride
tribe; nope, not even that cousin who asked
you to be her bridesmaid 12 years ago
and has just dropped you an ominous DM
saying she ‘can’t wait to return the favour’.
So how do you have The Conversation
with someone who assumes they’re
involved? “Honesty is key,” insists etiquette
expert Jo Bryant (jobryant.com). “Have a
water-tight reason and minimise hurt by
telling her yourself; she needs to hear it
from you rather than seeing something on
social media or hearing it second-hand.”
What if… My maids are from
different friendship groups?
If you’ve chosen ’maids from different areas
of your life, chances are they might not
have met before. How’s best to introduce
them? “If possible, in person,” advises
William Hanson, etiquette coach and
co-host of podcast Help I Sexted My Boss
(williamhanson.co.uk). “A wedding is a
hugely personal event, so that will always
trump more informal, digital gatherings.”
On the subject of digital, what about
a WhatsApp group? Sure – but avoid
bombardment, says William: “your friends
are already giving up time and effort.
Expecting them to be fascinated with
endless minutiae via a group chat is not
part of the deal.”
What if… I’d like them to buy
their own dresses?
Be upfront from the word ‘go’ – and if the
word ‘go’ passed silently six months ago,
have the conversation now. “Be honest
about your financial expectations,” Jo
recommends, “and be prepared to be
flexible on the choice of dress. You can’t
expect people to pay for something they
don’t like.” William agrees, adding: “Any
bride who insists on specially tailored or
OTT dresses for her bridesmaids must
fund these herself.” Instead, give your girls
colour and style guidelines, helping them
pick a gown you both love.
What if… My bridesmaid
announces she’s pregnant?
“Give her the option to step down,” advises
Tiffany. “Let her know that her pregnancy
and how she feels are of the utmost
importance, so it’s up to her how much she
wants to be involved.”
What if… They all fall out?
Wedding planning can induce stress and
tension – and not just for the happy couple.
“Occasionally the bride might find two
of her bridesmaids are competing for
attention or responsibilities,” reveals Jo. If
it all gets a bit too Bridesmaids, make it
clear you have neither the time nor energy
to deal with drama. “Remind them it’s your
big day and you have enough to do without
having to factor in warring friends, too.”

ontemporary romance was the
order of the day for this bridal
shoot, set in the grounds of
Dorset’s Parley Manor, a Georgian
country pile which opens up its estate to
couples looking for a wedding venue full of
elegantly rustic splendour.
Marrying an eclectic array of fabrics,
tactile surfaces and mixed blooms in a pink,
peach, orange, cream and green spectrum,
the feel was wild bohemia with a luxe twist.
“The rich colour palette and warm textures
were born out of a desire to create an
opulent autumnal big day,” photographer
Liza Edgington explains. “The aim was to
create an outdoor ceremony scene that
was intricate in its detail, but also bold in
colour, texture and scale: something for the
modern bride.”
Adding to the swoonsome glamour of
proceedings was the Kenneth Winston
bridal gown, with its beautiful botanical
embroidery and dreamy sweetheart
neckline, which was complemented by the
bride’s soft make-up and winsomely loose
up-do and wavy tendrils.
Fluffy throws, cushions
draped silks, lanterns and
plentiful blooms added to
the dramatic romance of
Parley Manor’s grounds.
