Cruises 2013-15
Welcome to the latest brochure featuring
holidays on board elegant Marco Polo much-
loved Discovery, two delightful, smaller and
more intimate vessels that have built an enviable
reputation for providing traditional cruise experiences at
exceptional value-for-money prices. The following pages
offer some wonderful opportunities to enjoy unforgettable
‘No-Flying’ cruises from a selection of UK ports, as well as
‘Fly-Cruises’ featuring some exciting destinations in the
Mediterranean and Black Sea.
The popularity of cruising continues to grow, especially on ships that combine all the magic
of fascinating ports of call with an on-board ambience that is perfectly conducive to rest and
relaxation – with fine dining, first-class entertainment and interesting guest speakers, comfortable
accommodation and a host of amenities and activities to enjoy, but without the crowds and the
overbearing razzamatazz of larger ships.
Join Marco Polo at the London Cruise Terminal in Tilbury, to journey to the winter warmth of the Amazon
and Caribbean, go in search of the Northern Lights, discover the British Isles, the glorious Norwegian
Fjords or Baltic cities and more. Sail from Edinburgh’s port of Leith to the North Cape or Iceland, or –
in 2014 – from Newcastle to destinations that include the Majestic Fjordlands and the Scottish Isles.
Discovery offers 2013 sailings from Harwich or Newcastle or, and 2014 voyages from Bristol Avonmouth,
Liverpool, Greenock, Leith, Hull or Rosyth to an equally wonderful selection of fascinating destinations. The
ship’s 2013 ‘south to the sun’ fly-cruises feature return flights from London, Manchester and a selection of
regional airports.
We know that wherever you choose to join us, you can look forward to a marvellous value, memorable cruise
holiday on Marco Polo or Discovery, and we look forward to the pleasure of your company!

Each of our cruises on board these two
wonderful ships – whether a one-night
‘mini-cruise’ or a six-week journey of discovery
– offers everything you could wish for in a
memorable holiday. Wake refreshed from a
night’s sleep in your comfortable cabin
(or perhaps a little bleary from
the previous evening), and
contemplate the waiting day.
Head for an exercise class or
the fitness centre to ward off
the guilt pangs at the calorie
intake… then head for breakfast!
Join in a daily quiz or attend an
informative lecture to learn about
the next fascinating port of call.
Competitive types might sign
up for deck games, enthusiasts
for dance classes – 5, 6, 7, 8!
– while like-minded folk might
meet in the card room for a
hand or two of bridge, or others retire to a
quiet corner of a lounge or library to curl up
with a good book. Of course, on fine days, a
deckchair or sun-lounger might be the place in
which to pass a few hours, as you take in the
views. On most cruises, guest speakers will
give informative talks about upcoming ports
and nearby places of interest, as well as the
bird, aquatic, or wildlife that you might expect
to encounter.
Your cabin – you can choose from a range
of categories – will be looked after by your
steward and housekeeper, who will ensure
that beds are made, towels are changed and
toiletries replenished. The Cruise Director and
the staff ensure that there’s always something
going on, for those that are interested, and
publish a daily newsletter to keep you updated.
When evening comes, with the sun setting
over the sea or on another port of call, enjoy a
wonderful meal in relaxed company, and then
be royally entertained.
If the stars are out, take a turn on the deck,
or perhaps enjoy a nightcap in a comfortable
lounge, before turning in with
memories of the day just gone
and dreams of what awaits
tomorrow.
The beauty of a cruising holiday
is that you can choose exactly
what you want to do, when you
want to do it, and we’ll do the
rest for you.
Our great value cruises on
board Marco Polo and
Discovery will bring you all this
and more, and we know that
you’re going to enjoy every
minute of your time with us!
Your cruise price includes all on-board activities
and entertainment, and Sterling is the on-board
currency on both vessels.
The Ever-changing
Wonder of Cruising
The greatest pleasure of a cruise holiday is the knowledge that as each day dawns, there’ll be a
new adventure to discover, a new experience to enjoy, a new vista to savour, new plans to be made.
From the moment you rise, until you retire to your cabin, wherever you find yourself, at sea or in
port, there’s a vast array of things to do or not to do. It’s entirely up to you!
“A wonderful
trip... the food,
entertainment and
friendly crew were
all excellent.

These cruise holidays are brought to you by some
of the foremost experts in the field, and you are
assured of a first-class experience every step of
the way, whichever of these wonderful cruises – on
either of these wonderful ships – you decide to join.
Newmarket Holidays is part of the Newmarket
Group, one of the UK’s leading privately owned tour
operators, established in 1983. Over the course
of the last 30 years, we have had the pleasure of
introducing thousands of happy customers to the
joys of cruising, and we are looking forward to
continuing our long association with Marco Polo
and to sailing on Discovery for the first time.
Marco Polo and Discovery are operated by Cruise &
Maritime Voyages, whose experience of organising
cruises for UK cruise holidaymakers stretches back
over a quarter century. Cruise & Maritime, together
with the operational expertise of vastly experienced
Global Maritime Group, the ships’ manager, will
ensure that guests on board both these wonderful
ships will enjoy unforgettable holidays.
Both Newmarket Holidays and Cruise & Maritime
Voyages share the same philosophy – to provide
outstanding cruise experiences at genuine
value-for-money prices.
Exciting Shore
Excursions
For many the highlight of a cruise holiday is the
chance, on arrival in each new port of call, to go
ashore and explore new surroundings. No sooner
will your ship have tied up – or dropped anchor
when the shore transfer is to be by ship’s tender
– than the excitement will mount. Coaches will be
waiting on the quayside ready to take you off on an
organised optional shore excursion, in the company
of friendly, knowledgeable guides.
Fascinating
Guest
Speakers
A much-loved cruising tradition is the
opportunity, whilst on board, to attend
light-hearted, but absorbing lectures given
by an expert in a particular subject field,
someone whose experience and insight, or
specific sphere of interest – sometimes linked
with the cruise itinerary – offers the chance to
peek behind the subject’s invariably fascinating
curtains. On Marco Polo and Discovery, this
tradition is carried on during longer cruises, and
guest speakers will offer informative talks on a wide
range of fascinating topics.
‘Super Craft’ Cruises,
and ‘A Laugh on the
Ocean Wave!’
On a number of cruises featured in this brochure,
in addition to all the enjoyment of the ship’s
amenities, and the fascinating ports of call,
there’ll be the chance to learn a new skill – e.g.
millinery, calligraphy, decorative card art and so
on – from an on-board expert. Please note that
the craftsperson may make a small charge for
materials.
A number of cruises will feature the presence of
guest comedians, who will not only add to the
evenings’ entertainment programme, but will
appear in ‘Comedy Corner’ interviews with the
on-board Cruise Director during the voyage.
Look out for these special cruises on the
following pages!

6. Life on Board Marco Polo
Welcome Aboard!
Marco Polo, already well known to British cruise
holidaymakers, will continue to sail from Tilbury
in 2013 and 2014, as well as offering sailings
from Edinburgh’s Port of Leith in 2013, and
Newcastle in 2014.
Fully stabilised and air-conditioned, Marco
Polo boasts eight passenger decks, which are
serviced by four lifts and three wide stairwells.
A vast amount of deck space, especially in the
stylishly raked aft-section of the ship, gathered
around the pool and Pool Bar, ensures plenty
of viewing opportunities, more-than-ample
room for sunbathers to top up their tans, as
well as space for the energetic to enjoy deck
games. A turn around Amundsen Deck, or the
complete circuit round Columbus Deck, which
includes a ‘jogging’ section, balances out the
calorie intake.
From the moment you step aboard on the
spacious, stylish Magellan Deck, where you’ll
find the attractive lobby area, you are aware
that here is an impressive vessel. A range of
comfortable lounges and bars, a beautiful main
dining room and a light and airy bistro adjacent
to the pool, a large, eye-catching shopping
arcade, the Livingston library, the Nansen card
room and an internet room all cater to your
cruising pleasures by day and night. The Jade
Wellness Centre is well equipped for the body-
conscious, with a gym, a hair and beauty salon,
massage and sauna area, as well as adjacent
deck-top Jacuzzis.
The Cruise Director and the team will provide
a full programme of entertainment in which
you can join if you wish, light-hearted quizzes
to port lectures, exercise classes to dance
instruction – while of course there’s always the
ever-changing view to savour, and new ports of
call to explore.
In an age of vast, impersonal, floating hotels, 22,000-tonne Marco Polo,
her profile marking her out as the epitome of sea-going elegance even
before you’ve stepped aboard, is a beautiful ocean liner in the classic
tradition. Offering high levels of comfort, sumptuous dining in stylish
surrounds, and a genuinely warm welcome from a crew who go out of
their way to place your enjoyment of your holiday above everything
else, Marco Polo will offer everything you might expect of such a vessel,
from the minute you first glimpse her, until the time you bid her “Adieu”.

to go with you.

8. day starts well, and both luncheon, (where
hot and cold dishes are offered) and dinner
(both à la carte) can be taken in these elegant
surroundings. The Waldorf is proud of its
status as a ‘proper’ formal dining room, and
is the perfect backdrop to some memorable
mealtimes. Dining in the Waldorf is a two-sitting
arrangement.
As an alternative restaurant venue, pool-side
Marco’s, the ship’s more casual location, is
every bit as enjoyable, whether it’s for an early
breakfast or relaxed lunch – perhaps taken
al fresco – or for a less formal evening, does
not suffer by comparison. Wherever you
choose to eat, you can accompany your meal
with a selection from the ship’s extensive and
reasonably priced wine list. During each cruise
(of 6 nights or more) there will be a Captain’s
Welcome and Farewell Party, as well as other
themed dinners.
Of course, all meals on board Marco Polo,
including morning coffee and afternoon tea
and cakes and late night snacks, are included in
the great value cruise prices.
Dining is always
a pleasure!
There are plenty of options when it comes
to mealtimes on board Marco Polo, and as
is invariably the case on board ship, calorie-
counters and the diet-conscious will have
difficulties resisting temptation, as sumptuous
meals balance out any time spent in the
fitness centre, or any number of turns round
Amundsen Deck!
The ship’s main dining room, the Waldorf,
situated low on Atlantic Deck, is a haven of
understated elegance, where friendly and
attentive waiters ensure that each meal is a
special experience. Marco Polo’s chefs do their
level best to ensure that diets are forgotten,
although there is always the ‘Healthy Choice’
option for the guilty, or saintly, to choose. Full
continental and cooked breakfasts ensure each

9. Daytime & Evening
Entertainment
There’s always something happening on board
Marco Polo, by day or by night.
During the day, if you haven’t taken a shore
excursion or headed off to explore under your
own steam – and especially on the days at sea
that for some are the most enjoyable of all –
the Cruise Director and the team will always
have something planned – look out for the
Daily Programme in your cabin.
After dinner the curtain goes up in the Marco
Polo theatre lounge on a glittering nightly show.
Sit back as the talented team of singers and
dancers entertains you with some first class
performances in excellent surroundings.
Marco Polo’s wide range of other lounges are
relaxed and convivial, perfect for enjoying the
company of new-found friends, and whether its
for a nightcap in the piano bar, or dancing in
Scott’s, the ship really does offer something for
all tastes until you turn in, perhaps after a final
‘turn on the deck’.

days to enjoy cruising past one of the world’s most stunning coastlines. It
also offers the chance to enjoy a ‘Laugh on the Ocean Wave’ with special

MARCOPOLO–SAILINgFROMTILBURY
Day by day itinerary
Day One
Travel to Tilbury to board Marco Polo,
enjoying your first dinner on board before
she sails later this evening.
Day Two
Today is spent at sea, getting to know the
ship and your fellow passengers.
A special feature of this cruise will be
performances from guest comedians who
will not only entertain in the evening’s
‘Laugh on the Ocean Wave’ spot, but will
also take part in light-hearted ‘Comedy
Corner’ interviews with the Cruise Director.
Day Three ~ Bergen
A first call is made in Bergen, gateway
to the fjords. Join the crowds on the
harbourside, and wander through the
narrow cobbled streets of this important
Hanseatic city, birthplace of Grieg and royal
residence. Don’t miss the ancient Bryggen
area, and perhaps take the Fløibanen
funicular to the heights above.
Day Four ~ Olden
Today’s call brings the opportunity of
an unforgettable shore excursion to the
famous Briksdal Glacier, part of the vast
mass of the Jostedalsbreen ice-pack,
which broods over the fjord.
Day Five
Today is spent at sea, as Marco Polo
cruises northwards along the beautiful
Norwegian Coast, following the ancient
route plied by the famous steamers that
to this day bring supplies and news of
the outside world to astonishingly remote
settlements.
Day Six ~ Leknes
Early this morning Marco Polo will cross the
Arctic Circle, as she steams into some of
Europe’s most spectacular waters. Rising
up out of the sea like miniature Alps, the
wild and beautiful Lofoten Islands, amongst
which Marco Polo arrives this morning,
offer almost unsurpassed scenic splendour,
with breathtakingly beautiful, tiny fishing
villages (with even tinier names like ‘Å’ ) set
beneath the towering peaks, sheer cliffs
and jagged rock formations, hemmed in
by the sea. Warmed by the Gulf Stream,
the island waters are the spawning ground
for Arctic cod, and everywhere the fishing
industry is in evidence. Marco Polo calls
at Leknes, nestled at the foot of stunning,
Alpine-like scenery, and there’ll be an
opportunity to explore this most beautiful
corner of the world on a shore excursion.
This evening, one of the undoubted
highlights of the holiday begins, with
a wonderful cruise in the evening light
through the Inside Passage, passing the
stunning scenery of Solbergfjord, Gisund
and Grøtsund.

Day Seven ~ Honningsvåg
Marco Polo cruises way beyond the Arctic
Circle hopefully in summer sunlight, close to
the coast of Finnmark, where the indigenous
Sami people still lead nomadic lives herding
reindeer.
Perhaps the high point (in more senses than
one) of the cruise will come this evening,
as Marco Polo docks in the pretty, remote
‘village’ of Honningsvåg, and you can make
you way on an optional excursion to the
famous visitor centre at Nordkapp, or North
Cape, almost at Europe’s northernmost
point, where the sun will sink below the
horizon only to rise again shortly afterwards.
You’ll return to the ship, passing
Knivskjellodden, Europe’s true north tip,
before Marco Polo turns south once more on
her Norwegian coastal voyage.
Day Eight ~ Tromsø
The largest settlement beyond the Arctic
Circle, Tromsø, with its magnificent cathedral
rising grandly from its bustling centre, is our
port of call this afternoon. Step ashore to
explore the market, held daily in the main
square, and enjoy the sight of fresh Arctic
fish being landed on the busy quayside.
The city’s Polarmuseum pays tribute to
intrepid Arctic pioneers, trappers and
explorers, including Norwegian heroes
Amundsen and Nansen.
East of the city centre is the stunning,
strikingly modern ‘Arctic Cathedral’, or
Ishavskatedralen, with its amazing stained
glass window and organ built in the shape
of a ship just two of its memorable features.
Close by, a cable car climbs to the summit
of Mt Storsteinen for unsurpassed views of
Tromsø and its surrounds.
Day Nine
Today is spent at sea.
Day Ten ~ Åndalsnes
Cruise into beautiful Romsdalsfjord and call
at the delightful port town of Åndalsnes,
for the opportunity to enjoy another shore
excursion, through some of Norway’s
most spectacular scenery, including the
vertiginous Trollstigen (Troll’s Ladder), a
breath-taking road at the head of the Valldal
valley. There may be a chance to visit the
famous Rødven stave church in its dreamy
fjord-side setting, before Marco Polo cruises
on through Romsdalsfjord.
Day 11 ~ Stavanger
The prosperous former fishing capital of
Stavanger, its sleek modern buildings
contrasting with the 19th-century white-
painted clapboard houses of Gamle
Stavanger, is Marco Polo’s first Norwegian
landfall. Step ashore to wander, taking in the
fresh fish and flower market of the harbour-
side square Torget, and this afternoon enjoy
the breathtaking passage though Lysefjord,
where the overlooking towering Preikestolen
rock formation is one of Norway’s most
photographed landmarks.
Day 12
Today is spent at sea, reliving the memories
of a wonderful holiday.
Day 13
Marco Polo arrives back in Tilbury at the end
of a simply wonderful cruise.
Please note: The viewing of the Midnight
Sun is entirely dependent on weather and
atmospheric conditions and whilst very likely,
is not guaranteed.

Glacier Museum at the edge of the vast
Jostedalsbreen glacier, before you re-join the

different kind, to celebrated Ord Distillery!

A day of Orcadian delights, as Marco Polo
docks in Kirkwall, historic ‘Royal Burgh’
and capital of Orkney, with magnificent St

Kirkwall, with its meandering streets and

German Fleet was scuttled in 1919, and

town of Tobermory, familiar to many, with
its picturesque, multi-coloured houses
encircling the waterfront, is a delightful place
to explore, as is nearby famous Duart Castle,
seat of Clan Maclean.
Day Seven ~ Dublin
Today finds Marco Polo in Dublin, the
incomparable Irish capital. Great city of
culture, home to Joyce, Yeats, Wilde and
Swift, birthplace of Shaw, with – at its heart
– the great seat of learning which is Trinity
College, Dublin is also one of Europe’s most
engaging, vibrant cities, with Grafton and
O’Connell Streets thronged with shoppers,
and the cafés and coffee shops, and of
course the famous bars and pubs, are
popular meeting places for locals and visitors
alike.
Day Eight ~ St Mary’s, Isle of Scilly
This morning finds us in the fabled Isles
of Scilly. Marco Polo anchors in sheltered
waters, giving you the opportunity to go
ashore by tender to explore tiny Hugh
Town on St Mary’s, and the flower-strewn
byways beyond, and the chance to take
an excursion to stunning Tresco, where
the world famous Abbey Gardens house
Britain’s finest sub-tropical plant collection.
Day Nine ~ St Peter Port, Guernsey
Guernsey’s delightful St Peter Port
welcomes Marco Polo today, and the
morning can be spent enjoying the pleasures
of this beautiful Channel Isle. Don’t miss
800-year-old Castle Cornet, which guards
the entrance to the harbour, nor the
medieval, cobbled central quarter of St Peter
Port, where countless shops and colourful
stalls offer tax-free gifts.
Day Ten ~ Honfleur, France
Honfleur lies at the mouth of the River Seine,
and is gateway to the glorious Normandy
countryside. Explore this favourite retreat
of the French Impressionists, with its
picture-book harbour surrounded by gabled
houses, or venture further afield, perhaps
on an excursion to Monet’s idyllic house
and garden at Giverny, or to fashionable
Deauville.
Day 11
Marco Polo arrives back in Tilbury, at
the end of a wonderful cruise around our
glorious, ‘sceptred isle’.

16. Day One
Welcome Aboard!
Make your way to the London Cruise
Terminal for embarkation, and enjoy your
first night on board.
Day Two
Enjoy the atmosphere on board, and
get to know Marco Polo and your fellow
passengers. A special feature of this cruise
is the chance to learn a new skill from an
expert in one of our ‘Super Craft’ sessions,
which will take place throughout the voyage.
Day Three ~ Eidfjord, Hardangerfjord
Marco Polo makes her way into stunning
Hardangerfjord, stretching into the
Norwegian interior. Be on deck early to
get your first glimpse of this stunning
landscape, where sheer mountainsides
plunge into the still waters. Our first
Norwegian call is at Eidfjord, at the eastern
end of the fjord. Here, you can go ashore
to enjoy an overland excursion through the
almost unimaginably beautiful surrounding
countryside, perhaps including a visit to the
famous Vøringfossen waterfalls.
Day Four ~ Olden
Today’s call brings the opportunity to take
and unforgettable excursion to the famous
Briksdal Glacier, part of the vast mass of
the Jostedalsbreen ice-pack, which broods
over the fjord.
Day Five
Marco Polo cruises further north along the
stunning Norwegian coast.
Day Six ~ Leknes, Lofoten Islands
Early this morning Marco Polo will cross the
Arctic Circle, as she steams into some of
Europe’s most spectacular waters. Rising
up out of the sea like miniature Alps, the
wild and beautiful Lofoten Islands, amongst
which Marco Polo arrives this morning,
offer almost unsurpassed scenic splendour,
with breathtakingly beautiful, tiny fishing
villages (with even tinier names like ‘Å’) set
beneath the towering peaks, sheer cliffs
and jagged rock formations, hemmed in by
the sea.
Warmed by the Gulf Stream, the island
waters are the spawning ground for Arctic
cod, and everywhere the fishing industry
is in evidence. Marco Polo calls at Leknes,
nestled at the foot of stunning, Alpine-like
scenery, and there’ll be an opportunity to
explore this most beautiful corner of the
world on a shore excursion.
This evening, one of the undoubted
highlights of the holiday begins, with
a wonderful cruise in the evening light
through the Inside Passage, passing the
stunning scenery of Solbergfjord, Gisund
and Grøtsund.
The Northern Lights
Departing October 6th 2013, October 27th 2014 – 15 Days
Marco Polo makes an autumn visit to Norway’s fjord- and island-dotted
coastline, in search of the spectacle of the Aurora Borealis, the celestial
phenomenon that has bewitched and entranced generations. In addition to
the chance to experience one of Earth’s truly most awe-inspiring sights, this
enchanting cruise includes the opportunity to learn a new skill from one of
our ‘Super Craft’ experts.

17. Day Seven ~ Alta
Marco Polo calls at remote Alta, gateway
to the Arctic region of Finnmark, home
to the indigenous Sami people, to herds
of reindeer, and to the nearby Ice Hotel,
where guests famously sleep in frozen
accommodation on reindeer skins. Alta is
also close to the UNESCO-World Heritage
site of the Hjemmeluft prehistoric rock
carvings, northern Europe’s most extensively
preserved examples, dating from between
2500 and 6000 years old.
Marco Polo sails late this evening, enabling
you to make the most of your stay in Alta.
In this remote region, the awe-inspiring
nature of the Northern Lights – should you
be fortunate enough to see them – is more
acutely felt.
Day Eight ~ Honningsvåg
Marco Polo cruises way beyond the Arctic
Circle, and the high point will come today,
as Marco Polo docks in the pretty, remote
‘village’ of Honningsvåg, and you can make
you way on an optional excursion to the
famous visitor centre at Nordkapp, or North
Cape, almost at Europe’s northernmost point.
You’ll return to the ship, passing
Knivskjellodden, Europe’s true north tip,
before Marco Polo turns south once more
on her Norwegian coastal voyage.
Day Nine ~ Tromsø
The city of Tromsø, with its daily market
and fascinating Polarmuseum, which
chronicles the lives and exploits of the likes
of Amundsen and Nansen, is today’s port of
call. Go ashore to explore, and don’t miss the
magnificent ‘Arctic Cathedral’, with its stained
glass and unique, ‘ship-shaped’ organ.
Day Ten ~ Narvik
The friendly port and ski-resort (it is possible
to ski down almost to the water’s edge)
of Narvik, which is also a legendary rail
terminus, and was the site of fierce WWII
battles on land and at sea, welcomes Marco
Polo today. Take the opportunity, on an
optional excursion, to catch the cable car to
the heights of Fagernesfjellet mountain for
some truly spectacular views.
Day 11
Today is spent at sea, enjoying life on board,
as Marco Polo steams back across the
Arctic Circle, heading south.
Day 12 ~ Åndalsnes
Cruise into beautiful Romsdalsfjord for
the opportunity to enjoy another shore
excursion, through some of Norway’s most
spectacular scenery. There may be a chance
to visit the famous Rødven stave church
in its dreamy setting, before Marco Polo
cruises on through Romsdalsfjord.
Day 13 ~ Bergen
A final call is made in Bergen, gateway to
the fjords. Join the crowds at the morning
fish market on the harbourside, and wander
through the narrow cobbled streets of
this important Hanseatic city, birthplace of
Grieg and royal residence. Don’t miss the
ancient Bryggen area, and perhaps take the
Fløibanen funicular to the heights above.
This evening Marco Polo slips her moorings
and heads for home.
Day 14
At sea, reliving the memories of a wonderful
holiday.
Day 15
Marco Polo arrives back in Tilbury at the end
of the cruise.
Please note: The viewing of the Northern
Lights is entirely dependent on weather and
atmospheric conditions and whilst very likely,
is not guaranteed.

Marco Polo cruises south, making her way
into warmer waters and across towards the
volcanic archipelago of the Azores. Make
the most of the ship’s many amenities and
get to know your fellow passengers.
Day Six ~ Ponta Delgada
The nine volcanic islands of the Azores
archipelago provide a welcome landfall for
Marco Polo. The largest of the group is Sao
Miguel, with its principal port city of Ponta
Delgada. Magnificent architecture, 16th and
17th century artwork, and an array of fine
churches are among the highlights of this
pretty and very friendly island.
Days Seven ~ 12 Atlantic Crossing!
Enjoy life on board Marco Polo as your
elegant floating home steams towards the
Caribbean.
Day 13 ~ Antigua
Tiny Antigua boasts wonderful scenery,
powder-white sandy beaches and warm
azure seas – Paradise! St John’s is the
thriving main town, its main attractions
gathered round the Redcliffe Quay.
Elsewhere, the restored naval dockyard
and the colonial forts of English Harbour
and Shirley Heights provide interesting
alternatives to the beach.
Day 14 ~ St Barts/Saint Martin
This morning Marco Polo finds herself in
the idyllic French playground of St Barts, or
St Bartélemy, one of the chic-est corners
of the Caribbean. Marco Polo will anchor
in the natural harbour of Gustavia, where
a pleasant hour can be spent relaxing in
a quayside café or perhaps lazing on a
picture-postcard-perfect beach.
It’s a short crossing this afternoon to the
shared island of Sint Maarten/Saint Martin,
respectively the Dutch south, and French
north of a tiny island celebrated as much
for its duty-free shopping opportunities as
for its wonderful beaches. The choice – to
spend or to tan – will be yours!
The Glorious Caribbean

London Tilbury to the blue seas and even bluer skies of the sun-kissed West
Indies. As well as calls at nine exquisite, idyllic isles, you’ll also bookend
your Atlantic crossings with calls at the remote, verdant Azores, and spend
some unforgettable days at sea.

19. Day 15 ~ St Kitts
St Kitts, which together with its tiny sister
Nevis forms one of the world’s smallest
nations is as laid back and traditionally West
Indian a place as anywhere in the Caribbean,
with restored plantation inns dotting the
lush landscape, and the views from the
UNESCO-World Heritage site of Brimstone
Hill Fortress, known as ‘The Gibraltar of the
West Indies’, are simply breathtaking.
Day 16 ~ St Lucia
Today Marco Polo visits the tropical island
paradise that is mountainous St Lucia,
calling first at the thriving capital, Castries.
Enjoy the vibrant Creole atmosphere and
hustle and bustle of this typically West
Indian settlement, or venture further afield to
explore this scenic wonderland.
This afternoon, Marco Polo sails down the
island’s west coast to Soufrière (pronounced
Souf -RAY), which sits in its idyllic bay
beneath where the twin peaks of the
‘Pitons’, amongst the Caribbean’s most
famous landmarks.
Day 17 ~ St Vincent/Bequia
St Vincent, the principal island of the
Grenadines group, is dominated in the north
by La Soufrière, a still-active volcano, and in
charming Kingstown, has a bustling capital
where life is lived at an unusually hectic pace
for this beautiful part of the world. Visitors of
course are much more relaxed!
After a morning’s exploration, it’s a short
crossing to idyllic Bequia – pronounced
‘Beck-way’ – where enchanting Port
Elizabeth attracts sailors from across the
globe. Marco Polo anchors in serene
Admiralty Bay, and you can go ashore by
tender to join in the fun, or take a water taxi
to a remote beach, before spending the
evening in Port Elizabeth.
Day 18 ~ Mayreau
None of our island calls can be more fittingly
described as a tropical paradise than tiny
Mayreau, with truly stunning beaches - this
is Heaven on Earth! Spend a lazy day just
dipping in and out of the blue water, enjoying
a beach-barbecue courtesy of the ship’s
chefs, or spend just a little more energy on a
half- or full-day optional catamaran excursion
to the stunning Tobago Cays.
Day 19 ~ Barbados
Discover Barbados, the most British of
the Caribbean isles. The bustling, colourful
capital Bridgetown lies close to exquisite
beaches, backed by some famously
swanky resort hotels and exclusive shore-
side restaurants. With the laid back Bajan
emphasis on enjoying life to the full,
Barbados ranks high on the list of highlights
of this wonderful cruise.
Day 20 ~ 25
Atlantic Crossing!
Relive the magical moments of the last three
weeks, as Marco Polo sails on, homeward-
bound.
Day 26 ~ Faial
Landfall is made at the island of Faial,
the westernmost of the central group of
the Azores, and known as the ‘blue island’
because of its profusion of hydrangeas. Marco
Polo ties up in the sheltered harbour of Horta,
Faial’s cosmopolitan principal settlement, and
there are opportunities to explore this remote
outpost, for centuries a refuge for passing
sailors. Head inland to discover the vast
extinct Caldeira, the volcano’s floor covered
in colourful flowers and plants, and don’t miss
the paintings on the harbour wall, created by
departing sailors for good luck. Marco Polo
sails later this evening.
Days 27 ~ 30
Marco Polo steams back towards the
Western Approaches and into the Channel
once more, at the end of the journey home.
Day 31 ~ Tuesday December 3rd
Bid farewell to Marco Polo, as you
disembark at the end of a simply wonderful
cruise.

Day by day itinerary
Day One
Welcome Aboard!
Make your way to the London Cruise
Terminal today for embarkation. Marco
Polo sails early this evening from Tilbury.
Get to know the ship, and enjoy your first
festive night on board.
Days Two-Four
Three days are spent at sea, enjoying life
on board, resting, relaxing and making

all soaking up the festive atmosphere that
will culminate in a memorable Christmas
Day spent at sea, with a feast of festive
celebrations conducted by the Captain and
crew of Marco Polo.
Day Five ~ Gibraltar
Boxing Day morning sees Marco Polo
arriving in the very British outpost of
Gibraltar, beneath the mighty Rock marking
the point where the Atlantic joins the
Mediterranean. Step ashore to explore
bustling Main Street, with its familiar shops
and stores, or take the cable-car to the
heights above where, on clear days, the
views stretch from the Straits to North
Africa and the mountains of North Africa
beyond, and where the famous Barbary

the ship later this afternoon for another
evening of festive entertainment and
celebration.
Day Six
Rest and relax on board as Marco Polo
steams towards the warmth of the Canary
Isles.
Day Seven ~ Lanzarote
No doubt you’ll be glad to step ashore
to walk off a few of those Christmas
calories as Marco Polo makes the first
of her Canaries’ calls in Arrecife, capital
of Lanzarote. Enjoy the warmth and –
hopefully – sunshine of this famous holiday
isle, and perhaps the opportunity to head
to ‘fire mountain’ and the chance – for the
brave – to take a camel ride to the edge of
a volcano!

Day Eight ~ Santa Cruz deTenerife
A full day is spent in the largest of the Canary
Islands, Tenerife, with Marco Polo tying up
in the principal port of Santa Cruz, gateway
to a place that boasts ‘the whole world in
one day’ – from the chance to swim in warm
waters to throwing snowballs on the slopes
of Spain’s highest peak, Mt Teide, to the
glitz of the capital’s shopping malls to some
stunning gardens, banana plantations and
forest of giant pines and eucalyptus trees.
A range of optional shore excursions will be
offered to enable you to make the most of
your stay, and with Marco Polo not sailing
until later this evening, there’s a chance to
catch some of the local flavour.
Day Nine ~ Santa Cruz, La Palma
One of the world’s most beautiful islands,
La Palma, waits to greet Marco Polo this
morning, with its central mountain rising
nearly 8,000 feet from the coast, and its
main town Santa Cruz gateway to a rugged
countryside dominated by the towering peak.
Step ashore to explore this, one of the lesser-
known corners of the Canary Island group.
Day Ten ~ New Year’s Eve ~ Funchal
Early this morning Marco Polo arrives off the
volcanic island of Porto Santo, the second
largest of the Madeiran archipelago, and a
popular holiday retreat in its own right, chiefly
due to its spectacular beach and delightful
principal town Vila Baleira, which was once
the home of Christopher Columbus. Spend
an hour or two exploring, before reboarding
Marco Polo for the short cruise to Madeira’s
verdant capital Funchal.
The ship will anchor just off the harbour,
giving the opportunity to go ashore by tender
and explore the flower-decked streets,
perhaps visit the famous Botanical Gardens
or to take a shore excursion inland, no doubt
to include the famous ‘toboggan ride’ from
Monte down to Livramento.
The highlight of the day will come at
midnight, when as well as ringing in 2014 in
style on board Marco Polo, you will be in a
perfect position to watch Funchal’s famous
fireworks display.
Day 11 ~ New Year’s Day
No doubt today will be a quieter one, as
Marco Polo turns for home.
Day 12 ~ Leixoes
This Portuguese port of Leixoes gives you
the chance to step ashore, perhaps to join
this afternoon’s excursion, to the historic
city of Oporto, in its picture-postcard setting
on the River Douro. The excursion will also
include a visit to one of the Port wine lodges,
and time for personal sightseeing which may
include a cruise along the Douro, before you
return to the ship.
Days 13 14
A last two days are spent at sea, no doubt
reliving memories of the cruise as you head
back into the English Channel.
Day 15
Marco Polo arrives back in Tilbury at the end
of a wonderful festive cruise.

MARCOPOLO–SAILINgFROMTILBURY
Days Nine Ten
Marco Polo steams further into the Atlantic,
heading for even warmer climes, as you
rest and relax on board.
Day 11 ~ Mindelo
The volcanic isles of the Cape Verde
archipelago are fast becoming a popular
holiday haven, despite (or perhaps because
of) their remote position in the mid-Atlantic.
Marco Polo calls at the island of Sao
Vicente, with its pretty capital Mindelo.
Spend the day exploring this colonial
outpost, with its pretty houses, or perhaps
take a trip inland.
Days 12 to 16 ~ Crossing the Line!
Relax and enjoy some more leisurely days
at sea as Marco Polo heads further south
towards Brazil and equatorial waters. Cross
the equator, as excitement mounts with the
ship’s imminent arrival in South America.
Days 17 to 24 ~ Cruising the Amazon
Relax and enjoy the extraordinary journey
up – and down – this fabled lazy river,
enjoying the comfort of the ship’s air-
conditioned lounges and the on-board
amenities as Marco Polo makes her stately
way towards Manaus, before turning round
once more to cruise toward the ocean.
Throughout this fascinating journey, there
will be opportunities to head ashore by
tender to discover a world surrounded by
the equatorial forests, perhaps catching
glimpses of colourful bird-life in the canopy,
and learning about the harsh lives of the
Amazonian populace or the startling – by
contrast – sophistication of some of the
larger settlements.
Fast-growing Santarém, the Amazon’s
third largest city, lies at the confluence
of the Amazon and the Rio Tapajós, and
from the city’s waterfront promenade the
rivers’ different coloured waters merging
is a memorable sight. Head ashore, or
take advantage of the optional excursions,
which may include a visit to the giant
hardwood trees of the region’s fiercely
protected primary forests.
Highlights of the journey will also include
the traditional ‘stilted’ villages of Alter do
Chão and Boca da Valeria, with its stalls
selling local handicrafts, and a fascinating
counter to Marco Polo’s gleaming luxuries.
In Manaus, where Marco Polo will moor
overnight, in stark contrast to a river-scape
of thick vegetation and occasional Indian
villages, you’ll discover a city of some 1.7
million inhabitants, the greatest glory of
which is the monumental Teatro Amazonas
Opera House, built with the riches of the
rubber industry.
The capital of the delta region of Amapá,
Santana for Macapá, lies on the equator,
and there’s an opportunity to stand
astride the imaginary line at the Zero Line
Monument, which lies just a couple of miles
from the fortified, Portuguese city.
The increasing – and pleasantly reviving
– sea breezes of the vast delta hint at the
proximity of the Ocean, and soon after
leaving Macapa in her wake, Marco Polo
heads out into the Atlantic, turning north,
leaving you with memories of a wonderful
few days that will stay with you forever.
Day 25
Another day is spent at sea, enjoying life on
board and hopefully sunny skies.
Day 26 ~ îles du Salut
A call is made at French Guiana’s Île
du Diable, or ‘Devil’s Island’ some 18

treacherous kilometres from the mainland,
and – until 1947 – a French penal colony
made infamous by serial escapee Henri
Charrière’s Papillon. Spend some time
exploring this barren place, with its cells
converted into a rudimentary hotel, or visit
the beautiful white-sand beach – a taste
of Caribbean pleasures to come that were
denied the island’s previous inhabitants.
Day 27
All the delights of cruising are yours to
savour, as Marco Polo continues her
journey north.
Day 28 ~ St George’s
The gorgeous ‘Spice Island’ of Grenada is
famed for its nutmeg, cinnamon and ginger,
as well as countless other flavourings.
Marco Polo’s call here this afternoon will
give you the opportunity to stroll off some
calories in the attractive British colonial
capital St George’s, as you explore
the maze of streets that leads from the
horseshoe-shaped harbour, the Carenage.
Other excursions will offer chances to
discover the island’s rain-forested interior
and its two – Windward and Leeward –
scenic coasts.
Day 29 ~ Kingstown
St Vincent, the principal island of the
Grenadines group, is dominated in the north
by La Soufrière, a still-active volcano, and in
charming Kingstown has a bustling capital,
where life is lived at an unusually hectic pace
for this beautiful part of the world. Visitors of
course are much more relaxed!
After a day’s exploration, there’s a chance
to enjoy some Caribbean hospitality before
Marco Polo sails this evening.
Day 30 ~ Castries
Today Marco Polo visits the tropical island
paradise that is mountainous St Lucia,
where the twin peaks of the ‘Pitons’
are amongst the Caribbean’s most
famous landmarks, calling at the thriving
capital, Castries. Enjoy the vibrant Creole
atmosphere and hustle and bustle of
this typically West Indian settlement, or
venture further afield to explore this scenic
wonderland.
Day 31 ~ Bridgetown
Discover Barbados, the most British of
the Caribbean isles. The bustling, colourful
capital Bridgetown, with its colourful
markets and famous Kensington Oval
cricket ground, lies close to exquisite
beaches, backed by some famously
swanky resort hotels and exclusive shore-
side restaurants. With the laid back Bajan
emphasis on enjoying life to the full,
Barbados ranks high on the list of highlights
of this wonderful cruise, and is a fitting final
Caribbean port of call before Marco Polo
begins her homeward journey.
Day 32 – 36 ~ Atlantic Crossing!
Enjoy all the delights of life on board Marco
Polo as she steams back east towards the
‘Old World’.

Welcome Aboard!
Make your way to the London Cruise

The morning is spent in Amsterdam, with

museums. Step ashore to explore the

excursion into the surrounding reclaimed
‘polderland’ of windmills and low-lying
farms.
Day Three
Enjoying the atmosphere on board, and get to

as the ship begins her journey north.
Day Four ~ Ålesund
You’ll arrive today in the port of Ålesund,
with its natural harbours lined by pastel-
painted, gabled and turreted buildings,
resembling more of a fantasy movie-set
rather than a working town. Colourful Art
Deco houses are a feature of the main
pedestrianised street, Kongens gate, while
close by the Sunnmøre Museum is a truly
impressive heritage centre, with some sixty
timber-framed buildings giving a detailed
insight into life in this part of the world
through the ages, and a fine collection of
ancient and replica boats, from Viking long-
ships to kayaks.
This evening Marco Polo threads her way
through the islands that dot this beautiful
coastline.
Day Five ~ Svartisen Glacier
Another very special day awaits, as Marco
Polo heads into magnificent Holandsfjord,
just above the Arctic Circle, cruising gently
across still waters to the unforgettable sight
of the mighty Svartisen Glacier, whose
tentacles reach down to just 20 metres
above sea level. The sight of the blue-white
ice moving imperceptibly down the valley is
one of the most arresting of the whole trip.
As Marco Polo steams further north,
there’s the ever-increasing chance that
the night sky might provide a first glimpse
of celestial wonders, and that, weather-
permitting, the phenomenon that has been
witnessed by millions down the ages –
actually a bombardment of the earth’s polar
atmosphere by electrons carried on ‘solar
winds’, and producing fantastical green and
bluish displays – might be viewed from late
afternoon.
Day Six ~ Narvik
The friendly port and ski-resort (it is
possible to ski down almost to the water’s
edge) of Narvik, which is also a legendary
rail terminus, and was the site of fierce
WWII battles on land and at sea, welcomes
Marco Polo today. Take the opportunity,
on an optional excursion, to catch the
cable car to the heights of Fagernesfjellet
mountain for some truly spectacular views.
Days Seven Eight ~ Alta
Marco Polo spends two days at our
northernmost port of call at remote Alta,
with the opportunity not only to sky-gaze at
your leisure, but also to explore the Arctic
