  2. -- It’s important to understand that the World Wide Web is fundamentally a text-centric system. -- Websites are comprised on web pages which are fundamentally text. -- Even rich media such as videos and images are commonly annotated with textual tags that describe the video or image content. -- Search engines scan all of this content on the Internet regularly (a technique known as spidering or crawling), gobbling up the text or words that it finds from one webpage to the next, all the while keeping track of -- every website it crawls, -- what words are found on each web page within a site, -- how often words are used on any given page, and -- which websites are linked to from other websites (and in what context). -- This process of crawling is how the engines find all of the valuable information they need to succeed.
