6. Hypotheses
1: The sufïŹx âologyâ means that people should tend to rate âastrologyâ as more
scientiïŹc than âhoroscopes.â
2a: Because of potential confusion or elision of meaning between âastronomyâ and
âastrology,â we should expect there to be a positive correlation between how people
rate the scientiïŹcness of these two subjects.
2b: Assuming Hypothesis 2a to be correct, we should not expect to see the same
positive correlation between ratings of horoscopes and astronomy because the
potential for semantic confusion is much less.
3C: Citizens who are more knowledgeable about science should be less likely to rate
astrology as scientiïŹc.
4: Following Adornoâs thesis, we should expect that people who score higher on a
measure of authoritarianism will be more likely to rate astrology as being scientiïŹc.

7. Additional questions
1: How is astrology viewed by Europeans in relation to
other scientiïŹc and nonscientiïŹc subjects?
2: How much of the variability in beliefs about astrology
across Europe is related to country of citizenship?
