The literature review morrel and carroll
1.
2. After having chosen a problem to do research on you must find
out if somebody else has done research about the topic you’re
going to investigate.
A literature review will provide us a background information and it
also will suggest a theoretical base upon which to build your
research design.
It is understood that a theoretical framework is helpful in guiding
our research. It can be used to focus on the problem statement,
help us to find information that has been researched, if our
research questions have been studied enough, if the research
needs to be re-examined in the context of our school, it also can
give us some ideas to research on things that we may not have
considered yet
The third reason for doing literature review is that it prevent us from
inventing things, it helps us to know if there are instruments or
interview questions that has been used or tested before and that
we can use in our research. Are there ideas for future studies that
we can use to make our questions?
We can also compare our reseach findings by looking at the work
some other people has done and if it is an extension of mosething
somebody else has discovered
It is important that when doing a research paper we put the list of
all the references and materials hwich are cited at the end of the
work.
3. It is important to mention that we should cite what needs to be cited; we
do not need to cite everything we read or have read.
4. Having written an outline helps us to focus in our research and writing this
section of our research paper.
It is important to ask ourselves if what we are reading is relevant to our
research.
The Education Resources Information Center ( ERIC) is probably the
most common database in education and it is able for everyone on the
internet.
ERIC also acts as a clearin house for a variety of papers, presentations,
conference proceedings, etc.
There are also moe other databases but many of them need you to
subscribe to obtain the information( such as socINDEX and psychINFO.
Google scholar uses the WorlCat database as the initial sorce for
references
Published Literature Reviews
Typical journals that publish literature reviews include the review of the
research in education and review of the Educational Research
Education Journals
5. Practitioner journals: Are published to help teachers solve specific
problems in their own classrooms.
Policy journals: Are intended to review important issues in eduction.Hve
theme-based issues. They try to present well-known authors in the
particular erea.
Research journals: Present peer-reviewed current research .
Subcriptions are often expensive .
Methanalysis- someone studied a number of studies, that is, the data
presented in published studies are used as the data sources.
Books
Books are helpful in providing theoretical construcs. However,
materials in books tend to become even more dated than those in
journals and often involve more reading than is necessary.
Internet finds
It is recommended to check out the author or citations and reputable
educational site to validate its use.
Literature review from journal articles.
Be careful to stay focused on your topic and pay attention to
timeliness.
6. Reading your references
I understood that when we are doing a research we need to take
notes. It is said that we must have complete citations. If we have a
quotation, we have to note the exact page number after your quotes
on your notes. When reading an article, decide wheter you can do with
just taking notes or if you feel the piece is important enough that you
may want to refer to the original.
