Virtual and augmented reality devices have been hyped for decades, but the technology is finally starting to reach its full potential. In this presentation, we’ll talk about the differences between VR and AR, discuss the plethora of VR devices, and explore how to utilize them in a library setting.
Presenter: Craig Lefteroff, Technology Innovation Librarian, Nebraska Library Commission.
4. 3 APPROACHES
Augmented reality
• You see the real
world
• Digital objects are
overlaid onto real
objects
• Smartphones &
tablets, not just
headsets
5. 3 APPROACHES
Mixed reality
• Lets users see the real world,
but adds virtual objects (or
vice versa)
• Anchors those objects so that
they can be treated as “real”

19. Intel’s Project Alloy
Wireless
Not a lot of info about the headset
yet—we don’t even know if it will look
like this in the final version.
The developer kit arrives this year, but
“the public probably won’t see this
thing for sale for a long time.”
21. The “Big Three”

24. VR
VIEW-MASTER
Released this fall
Smartphone mount can accommodate
almost any device
Multiple headphone jacks
Binocular-like focus dial to accommodate a
wider range of vision.
29. Potential Problems
LATENCY – the difference between your head’s movements and the
images of the screen changing (motion sickness)
VERGENCE – Our eyes converge to look at close objects and diverge to
look at distant objects
ACCOMODATION – The lenses in your eyes focus on objects that are very
near while distant objects in the background become fuzzy.
