1. Ron Paul Visiting Bethel
February 01, 2012 | 2:41 p.m.
Congressman Ron Paul.
Congressman Ron Paul of Texas will speak at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, February 4, in Benson Great
Hall. The event, sponsored by Bethel’s College Republicans, is free and open to the public, with
doors opening at 5 p.m. Andrew Baker, president of the College Republicans, said that the group
contacted all GOP presidential candidates in November to request a visit, and Ron Paul’s campaign
was the only one to accept the invitation. “Having one of the four remaining GOP candidates speak
on campus will provide the Bethel community with a great opportunity to hear relevant political
discourse,” says Baker. “His speech should inform Bethel students on important current issues that
our country is facing. Students can then form their own stances, deciding whether or not they agree
with his viewpoints.”
The Bethel College Republicans have 313 members. The group’s goal is to provide Bethel students
with the opportunity to hear great conservative speakers and volunteer for Republican causes and
events.

Why would we want an illegal alien and distant cousin of the Bush's to speak. They are
a bunch of frauds. Ron Paul is scaring the crap out of everyone becaue the Hollywood
of Washington is over. Reagan was the best actor we had in my lifetime....too bad he
sold out too.

God fearing?? why does that matter? separation of church and state?? It seems to me
Ron Paul wants to go back to something like the articles of confederation not the
constitution. And you apparently don't understand the vast difference between

However, reading those comments with a different outlook helps me realize how freaking

return. My guess is that you guys also consider yourselves humble Christ followers. Thats
not the message coming across.

I am highly concerned by the tone of these comments. We are a community of Christ
Followers, as is defined by the institution's core values. As such, we are part of one body,
brothers and sisters in Christ. Can we put aside party lines and live in Christ's reconciling
work? As Ephesians 2: 14-16 tells us:
"For he himself is our peace, who has made the two groups one and has destroyed the barrier,
the dividing wall of hostility, by setting aside in his flesh the law with its commands and
6. regulations. His purpose was to create in himself one new humanity out of the two, thus
making peace, and in one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which
he put to death their hostility."

Brothers and sisters, please keep in mind that behind every label of Republican or Democrat
is a human soul created by God. People in both of those groups are Christ-followers, are
present at Bethel, and are worthy of this common respect.
We may disagree on the ideas and policies and let's have a healthy dialogue about those.
What we shouldn't do is use this comment forum as a way to insult people personally or to
make them a caricature by distorting their humanity or their motives.
As Baker mentions in the article, we have an opportunity to directly engage the current
political dialogue
of a possible presidential candidate within Bethel's walls. Let's make the most of that
opportunity by honoring each other in respectful dialogue over the issues and what they
mean to us as members of a political party, members of the body of Christians, and as
members of humanity.

Or has nobody heard of satire comedy before? Satires sometimes reveal a harsh truth about
ourselves or society or a certain person through comedy. Unless you can put yourself into a
new perspective, you leave yourself disadvantaged stuck in your own self-righteous world.
Oh and love the contextual analysis of Ephesians... I mean who knew that gentiles were

not? During an abortion, is an innocent person being attacked? In socialist government, is
there theft and bondage? I can love you brother, and not love your sin because love is an

I think people were attacked here, and I do not believe that there was any satire here. I think
people do need to lighten up and not be blinded by a Conservative Christian Status. Just
because I am a Democrat does not mean that I don't have any morals, am a socialist, and not a
Christian. This is what disturbs me with many acclaimed Republicans is that they have these

Satire is one thing.
Ron Paul, being a Texan, has hopefully have seen a few Westerns in his day. That being the
case, he could probably give you another name for what it is when one, anonymously,
"satirizes" someone else by name. It's called a sucker punch, and it makes John Wayne squint
his eyes and frown in a certain way.
Ron Paul could, hopefully, also tell you what it means to put your name behind something
and stand for it. How it takes courage, and a good deal of hard thinking before you do it.
Sure, internet comments are an easy place to take a pot shot at someone or something--after
all, you can swing away, risk free. Ever notice, though, how the heroes in the story tend to
walk right down main street?

11. I second Back to the Bible's statement about the tone of these comments. As Christians, we are
called to love and accept one another. As a member of College Republicans, I am clearly not
in support of Obama or the Democratic platform as a rule. I however find that slinging mud
and making rude and vulgar comments is not going to get us anywhere. Both Democrats and
Republicans alike have flaws and good attributes as well. Instead of tearing one antoher
down because they are different than us, how about we learn to listen to one another and
accept others.

I'm with Will on this. This forum is hardly the place to voice an opinion. Do it in front of
somebody that can respond and you can be held accountable for what you say. The loudest or

The way I see it is some troll got fed and now this wall of text has become excruciatingly
painful to read through; all the democrats playing the minority victim card yelling "hey!
recognize me as a christian!" and the republicans bullying "hey something something

I think you're all crazy! I'm not going to say if I'm a republican or democrat, partly cause I
hate the partisan nature of politics in America today, and partly because I would get ripped
apart by one side or the other (for being a hypocritical bigot or insensitive bastard, or
ignorant idealist or uninformed opinionated idiot) before even having the ability to present
some of my deeper thoughts and beliefs. I think it's awesome that we have the opportunity to
host a strong candidate from either party here at Bethel, and that it is a great opportunity to
open up political discourse and hear first-hand from a very unique candidate in an
interesting election year. Quit the hating on one side or the other or extrapolating about the
moral majority/conservative evangelical coalition or any other garbage like that, and try to
have some civilized discourse over the issues that we should care about as loving Christians
in a broken world. Congrats to DBake and the College Republicans for getting a high-profile
candidate to speak on campus. A cool opportunity. I regret a lot of the comments on here, but
think that former alums/concerned outsiders need to realize that these views do not reflect
the views/thoughts of the vast majority of kids on campus here (I would venture a guess that
most of those posters don't go to Bethel). Show up to chapel sometime or Quest Forums or
TCO or team sporting events or any other Bethel event and you can get a better outlook on
how we are operating as a Christian university compared with viewing an online forum open
to any anonymous poster.

it actually is part of the first amendment, yes the term "separation of church and state"
may not be used, it touches on the subject

As a 2008 graduate of Bethel University, I have never been prouder of my alma mater. I was a
member of a collwge republicans at bethel and can tell they've come a long way since I was a
student at Bethel. When i was there, the leader of college republicans didn't want anything to
15. do with Ron Paul so I started my own Ron Paul Group on face book in 2008. Since Ron Paul
is really the only true Christian just-war/anti-war candidate in the race, I think a stop like
this on the campaign trail makes perfect sense.
Ron Paul is the only one with any level of Christian integrity in the race. It' really ironic too,
because unlike candidates like Mike Huckabee and Rick Santorum and Rick Perry, he doesn't
wear his Chrisitianity on his sleeve and leverage it for political gain. He probably won't even
talk about religion tonight. If I wasn't in the out of state I would certainly have been in
attendance tonight.

"Drunk", you should be ashamed of yourself...how dare you post such a ridiculous
comment in the middle of serious, mature conversation amongst people who are brave
enough to post their opinions anonymously! So immature.

I'm a Bethel student, and attended today's event with Ron Paul. He delivered his message in
an intelligent and respectful manner. It saddens me that participants in this forum choose the
easier path of negativity.

Congratulations to the people of this college for going to the work of setting up this rally. I
think it is great that young people are getting involved in politics so that their views can be
heard by the leaders of this country. I feel that this country is headed down the wrong path
right now and that Ron Paul has a lot of ideas that need to be heard and I applaud him for
taking the time to involve young people all over this country. I just hope that the situation
does not erode to the point where it is irreversable before we can get it corrected. Anyway it
was good to see so many people at the event.
