This document provides information about a service-learning course involving a 10-day trip to Guatemala in May 2013. Students will earn 3 credits total by taking a spring class and participating in the summer trip. The trip will involve building homes, distributing clothes, and volunteering at clinics, schools, and shelters. The $2,623 program fee covers airfare, housing, meals, transportation, expenses, and insurance. Applications are due February 25.
2. INTL 379 – Global Perspectives
on Civic Engagement
This course is designed to help students understand and promote civic
engagement and leadership through local and international
experiences. Leadership development will emphasize using tools of
social change. 2 credits will be given in spring 2013 and 1 credit will be
given in summer 2013 after the service trip to Guatemala.
Participants will learn, live and experience service in a variety of
environments. The ten day service trip to Guatemala will encompass
international travel along with an intense service immersion.

• Monday, May 13: Departure from Fargo
• Tuesday May 14 – Tuesday, May 21:
Service projects in Guatemala including
Home building
Clothing distribution
Volunteering at a clinic, school and orphanage
Serving at a homeless shelter
• Wednesday, May 22: Arrive back in Fargo
5. Program Details
• Eligibility: Students with a 2.5 GPA from
any major are eligible
• Credits: 2 credits in spring, 1 credit in
summer. Both courses must be taken to
be eligible to participate
• Class: Class will be Wednesdays, 6:30PM
– 9:00PM beginning February 27
