This document provides an overview of a film studies lesson focusing on the ideologies of Erik Barnouw and Stella Bruzzi and how they apply to documentaries and the film "9/11". It introduces the aims of reviewing prior learning on these theorists and exploring how their views on documentary filmmaking can be seen in the film. Students are given examples to match with different theorists. The lesson then discusses exam board expectations around engaging spectators and examples from the film that conform to or challenge the views of Barnouw and Bruzzi around choices documentarians make and the integrity of reality. Students are tasked with analyzing scenes using worksheets and writing a paragraph analyzing an example using one theorist's views.

EXAM BOARD EXPECTATIONS
HOW do the examples below “Cinematically” engage
the spectator? (June 2013 question Focus)
8. FM4 – Section B
Erik Barnouw (1993)
"The documentarist, like any communicator in any medium, makes endless choices".
WHAT are some of the ‘choices’ (Barnouw – 1993) that Jules & Gedeon made in
this documentary?
The narrative and other technical features (sound, editing, mise-en-scene, camera -
obtrusive? unobtrusive?) is "an expression of his point of view, whether he realises it or
not, whether he acknowledges it or not" (Barnouw – 1993)
Should they have
continued?
9. Stella Bruzzi (2000) states that Barnouw's ideology connotes:-
"..the minute an individual becomes involved in the representation of reality, the
integrity of that reality is irretrievably lost".
The narrative and other technical features (sound, editing, mise-
en-scene, camera - obtrusive? unobtrusive?) is "an expression of
his point of view, whether he realises it or not, whether he
acknowledges it or not" (Barnouw – 1993)
WHAT are some of the examples in the text where the spectator would question
the ‘integrity’ (Bruzzi – 2000) of the reality as a result of Jules & presence?
