5. FEEDBACK –
Mark the other students work in
a different colour pen and make
amendments where necessary.
6. 1) “As people individually and collectively program the web, they’re increasingly in
command”
(Tapscott & Williams – 2006)
Example:
S-VoD services such as NETFLIX allow it’s users to be “increasingly in command”
(Tapscott & Williams – 2006) not just through the choices on offer across a range of
genres, but through additional features such as the ‘rate, review and recommend’ options.
YOU SHOULD the research a statistic that highlights the growing appeal of this form of
film consumption in the contemporary media landscape.
7. b) Henry Jenkins (2006) – VOD – “THE KINDS OF ENTERTAINMENT EXPERIENCES THEY
WANT”
c) Connected Television
Is this an example of Convergence Culture?
9. 2) a) Marc Prensky (2001) - “Digital Natives”
b) Generation of people who want their media fast, free and on
the go.
10. 3) Gatekeeping
4) Dan Gillmor (2004) – citizen journalism – former audience
Is this an example of Citizen Journalism?
HOW?
11. 5) Dave Winer (1994) -
"Once the users take control, they never give it back.”
• WHAT do we “take control” of?
• WHAT is this product an example of?
• The verbal code ‘Digest’ in the
name of the product connotes…
12. 6) a) Charles Leadbetter
b) Leadbetter (2009) – “we are part of the experiment as well as conducting it”
c) Example - Social Media -
13. 7) Jenkins (2006) – “courted across multiple media platforms”
8) ‘A Field in England’ (2013 – Film Four) – ‘Multi-platform day-and-date release’ – e.g
1,200 downloads on the release date (July 5th
2013)
• WHAT did Sony/Columbia
produce and distribute?
14. 9) 1. Jurgen Habermas (1991)
“The media will focus primarily on Celebrity and trivia”
10) The ‘Stars’ inspire the circles to follow them/”tweet” about them etc.
However, the ‘circles’ (Society) and their views are equally as important.
Stories that are centered around ‘Personalities’
(Galtung & Ruge) are more common place on
the online version of the Mail than the hard copy
version.
19. TV
• WHAT is the term used to describe the
OLD ways of Production, Distribution
and Exhibition?
• Scheduling and Regulation –
HOW much control do we have over
this?
The BBC are an example of a PSB Institution –
WHAT does PSB stand for?
P ________ S ________________
B ______________________ Institution
Analogue
ublic ervice
roadcast
20. BBC defends FA Cup scheduling after
EastEnders episode is displaced
By Harry Fletcher
March 18th 2015 "We try to balance the different needs of our audience by
rescheduling the majority of affected programmes within the
same week but we realise that not everyone will agree with all
of the specific decisions taken.”
21. http://www.theguardian.com/media/2015/may/18/tv-licence-loophole-bbc-daily-mail
Date All Homes TV Homes ITV Homes Digital TV Homes
January 2015 27.5 26.1 26.1 26.1
July-June 2014 27.3 26.0 26.0 26.0
January 2013 27.4 26.5 26.5 26.5
There is plainly an issue for the BBC with the so-called “iPlayer loophole”. Essentially, you
need a licence to watch TV as it is broadcast – that is, as part of a live stream – irrespective
of what device you use. But you don’t need a licence to watch TV on demand – again,
irrespective of the device you use. So live TV on a mobile phone does need a licence but
catch-up on a 42-inch plasma doesn’t.
22. Has the development of IPTV (Internet
Protocol TV) encouraged a more ‘physically
solitary experience’ (Poniewozick – 2009)?
23. HOW do the BBC market this online service?
You need to watch at least ONE example (the
more contemporary the better) of a trailer
produced by the BBC that helps publicise the
service to its consumer.
25. Print News – Online News
• WHAT are your future projections for consuming “The News”?
• HOW will this change over the next 20 years?
Make a prediction OR find out for yourself!
26. “Pros & Cons” –
20 Minutes
YOU MUST choose a Media Area we have looked at today (or another of your
choice – Social Media for example) and produce a document to print off that
establishes the Pros & Cons of this Media Area for:
•Producers – The Institutions producing and distributing this content
•Audiences
YOU SHOULD investigate what other media platforms have to say about the Media
Area –
Are they embracing it OR are they trying to ‘inject’ (Hypodermic needle theory –
Katz & Lazarfeld – 1955) a ‘moral panic’ (Barker – 2001) into its audiences?
28. Individual Case Study – Research
- 10 Minutes
Using the document you were given a few weeks ago, YOU MUST finalise your research
into your chosen Case Study in preparation for the Exam.
YOU SHOULD apply Key Terms/Theory from your Unit G325 – Section B Booklets as
and where relevant and explore what other secondary sources have to say about your
Product.
34. Exam Question –
Evaluate the ways in which media producers have taken advantage of convergence.
[50 Marks]
• WHO are the producers?
• Leadbetter (2009) and Winer (1994) –
Are we producers?
WHAT is the term used to describe this shift in audience behavour?
• WHAT Media Areas best apply to
this Question and WHY?
• Convergence –
Henry Jenkins (2006) – KEY!
35. Exam Question –

YOU MUST complete this Question in no longer than 1 Hour (if you are allocated extra-
time in the exam then take the extra time on offer of an additional 15 minutes)
Complete the answer in your exercise books OR type your answer if this would be better
for revision purposes.
38. End of Session
