Common Core State Standards are coming.

New standards will bring major changes
With	an	overwhelming	number	of	states	having	adopted	the	Common	Core	State	Standards	(CCSS),
educators	will	need	to	focus	on	building	the	higher-level	critical	thinking	skills	that	are	designed	to
get	students	college-	and	career-ready	and	are	at	the	heart	of	the	new	standards.

The	fundamental	changes	in	the	areas	of	emphasis	for	reading	and	math	will	impact	curriculum	and
teacher	training	decisions.	Below	are	examples	of	changes	to	prepare	for.

Reading/ELA standards emphasize: Mathematics standards focus on:
       •	Close,	evidence-based	analysis	of	more •	Depth	over	breadth	of	understanding
complex	texts •	Higher-order	conceptual	understanding
       •	Knowledge	of	academic	and	domain- versus	procedural	understanding
         specific	vocabulary •	Non-routine,	real-world	problems	with
       •	Authentic	text,	especially	informational an	emphasis	on	word	problems
selections	such	as	historical	documents •	Connections	between	related	topics	to
and	science	articles build	deeper	understanding
       •	Higher-order	thinking	skills	that	require
         students	to	make	comparisons	across
         mixed	media

New assessments will require that students:
         •	Build	comfort	with	online	computer-based	assessment	format
         •	Demonstrate	deeper	conceptual	understanding
