What has motivated you to pursue higher education?
As a woman from a very long line of passionate learners, it is only right for me to continue the
tradition. On my mother's side of the family, a majority of my elder relatives had completed some
form of higher education. My great–grandmother was a certified seamstress, my grandmother and
aunt are certified nurses, my uncle received his degree in chemical engineering, and my mother and
father received their degrees in liberal arts. Growing up with educated, successful, well–traveled
African–American role models throughout my life provided me with the drive and inspiration to
pursue my higher education as well! Although some people may believe that receiving a college
degree and traveling the world represents wealth, but in my family, it represents effort to give back to

More offers of employment are likely awarded to individuals who has a degree over those who did
not attend college or attain a degree. Benjamin Franklin clearly stated that, "An investment in
education pays the best" (Benjamin Franklin). Nobody denies that college is very expensive, leaving
you feeling like you are putting more in than you are getting out. However, there are grants and
scholarships you can receive to help you alleviate the stress of funding. Scholarships can be awarded
by universities or private organizations that do not have to be repaid. Students that have proven that
them and their parents are financially unable to pay for school can receive scholarship funding.
Furthermore, students can be awarded with merits, this money is based on outstanding performance
throughout high school. Then, there are loans that are given by banks or private organizations and
must be repaid plus interest. Although, you want to try and avoid this option, it is still a solution to
get funding for your education. College also offers financial, professional, and personal benefits.
