A high schooler comes home from school. He gets out his homework and gets started.The mom of
the student said start your homework and then we will eat.The mom spends an hour at dinner, but
the student is not done with his homework. He is asking his dad all types of questions, but he is
too busy to help.That happens every day at this family home.When the boy got his test scores back
later in the year, they were so low. Students have busy lifestyles and stress at home.They need time
away from studies to appreciate what they learn.There are so many things that can help them prepare
for life outside of school and giving a lot of homework causes stress to the student and family. I

What is homework? Most students might say that homework is a time waster and is unrelated to
learning. Both are logical statements in the eyes of the average student, but what are the facts and
why is homework part of our school curriculum? Homework has been a standing tradition in
America since the 1950's due to the education war with the Soviets. Ever since the ending of the
Cold War in the early 1990's, the American consensus openly welcomed homework as a part of
school curriculum. Homework is in our modern American roots, and it is so effective it has stayed
in our foundation. Homework is beneficial to young scholars in our school system to this date: it is
helpful and beneficial in the way to reinforce knowledge learned in schools, it provides clarity and
room for the short class schedule, and it also forces the need to use responsibility and time
management.
Reviewing and reinforcing topics learned in school is an important way to clarify and to extend the
realm of comprehension that students need in order to pass standardized tests with flying colors!
Some students may not fully understand the topic, such as "systems of equations" in math, and may
not notice their ignorance for a certain part until they try to do their homework. Of course, that is
why there are teachers and not textbooks that stare at you in class, however, learning and
understanding topics on your own during silence and solidarity may be beneficial to most students.

This day in age, high school students are feeling more stress than working adults, and kids are
starting to swerve away from learning. Both teens and children are at risk of health problems due
to anxiety and a shortage of family time, playing, and sleeping. Public schools have 6 hours to

all of this is too much homework. Homework causes students to sleep less, have more stress, and

renowned in the community (Cooper 2). Some studies he examined showed homework can cause
physical and emotional fatigue, fuel negative attitudes about learning and limit leisure time for
children. This is beyond true nowadays, where our school systems push kids to sleep less, stress
more, and spend less time with family. The fact that most of us students get less than the
recommended 8 hours a night and are given on average one hour of homework per class is awful

High School. I was always told homework will help me because it is a way to practice and fully
master the material I needed to learn. In high school students spend a few hours a night doing what
they see as busy work, meaning they do not think it is helping them at all. Some students do not
mind work load. They feel doing the problems,writing the short responses, filling out packets, helps
them because they practice and remember the material. Aquestion that has come up is whether
assigning packets of homework, mostly finding a word and it's definition, will help students master

In cases like this, students do not learn the material. By simply writing many definitions, or even
writing wrong definitions, students do not grasp a deep understanding of concepts or main points of
the material. As stated in the book Helping Your Child with Homework, the best type of homework
assignments are the type that include some kind of feedback from the teacher to the student; the
homework assigned to students should also be at a level appropriate for the students learning
abilities, and the assignments should challenge the student intellectually (book citation). Packets
filled with simple questions such as " what is meiosis" or "give the definition of simile" do not
challenge students and teachers do not give much, or any, feedback to students with this type of
homework. Many argue that it is difficult for teachers to give feedback when they teach one hundred
or more students. The amount of papers they need to grade is high and they simply do not have the
time to write comments on every assignment. My answer to this is simple. Instead of assigning
packets of homework, assign a few critical thinking questions. The students would give a brief
summary on the main concept, then perhaps paraphrase a definition that is important to know.
Students would then really think about their answers and the teacher could give comments since
they will no longer have to skim packets. Teachers would only have to read
